Inspiration

One of our teammates recently went on a group trip with her friends, and found the task of managing the spreadsheet for all their shared expenses to be a large hassle. We were inspired by this real-life inconvenience to build a tool that would streamline this process. Instead of using a complicated spreadsheet, we would build a webapp that group members can easily access with minimal management.

What it does

TripSplit takes in user expense inputs and performs back-end calculations on participant expenditures and debts.

How we built it

We coded using Javascript, HTML, and CSS along with Firebase for our database.

Challenges we ran into

We both had limited prior knowledge on web apps and databases. Because of this, we ran into many challenges with figuring out how to make our idea a reality with code. While working out the add and retrieve data functions, we encountered many bugs that took time to resolve. We also had to make sure we managed our time wisely, given the constraints of the hackathon and our other responsibilities.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to gain a basic understanding of web development that allowed us to get to where we are now, especially with the limited time we had. Both of us hope to continue learning, so we can bring this project to further completion even after the hackathon iso over.

What we learned

We learned how to make forms and connect front-end and back-end web app processes, and how to design a clean, user-friendly UI.

What's next for TripSplit

Our next steps are to improve the current web functions and hopefully expand TripSplit to be more accessible as a mobile app.
