Inspiration
According to a SWR customer survey, Trains being late is the number one cause of customer dissatisfaction. The whole UK network had 8 million minutes of delays in the last year. 4% of them is due to station delays, which is 222 days of delay!
What it does
We have built a route performance improvement tool to help operators identify when and where exactly a dwell delay happens, which has been a tough challenge up to today because of inaccurate data. We use precise to the second, real-time data collected across the whole SouthWestern Railway network and we present with an easy to use interface that provides a network overview at glance. We provide two different views: a geographical, network-wide presentation aimed at management and a detailed line-focused view intended for station managers and on-field staff. The app offers a real-time view with the actual performance of the network and a historical tool to aggregate and compare data from previous periods. It allows staff to easily understand which stations need attention and when, and put in place measures to investigate and reduce dwell time, for example analysing CCTV recordings.
How I built it
We used JavaScript with React to develop the front-end and node.js and MongoDB for the back-end REST API. We use JSON data exchanging, data has been exported from the datasets using Python Pandas.
Challenges I ran into
Integrating the back-end with the front-end and make everything work overnight.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The great team work and the new skills achieved in web development. Also, being part of this Hackathon!
What I learned
React app development and that station delays are an important part of the train performance.
What's next for Undweller
Machine Learning analysis to understand pattern automatically and suggest to staff where to look to find problematic times.
