THE OPPORTUNITY

Victims of natural disasters need reliable ways to get access to the appropriate resources, from a medical evacuation to a working flashlight.

OUR INSIGHTS

Data on mobile devices is often limited for civilians after natural disasters, along with power and battery for their devices. SMS is more reliable after a disaster than apps that rely on data and phone calls, as data is prioritized for emergency personnel. Citizen volunteers are eager to help, but lack tools for organization or direction and face many of the same challenges as victims.

OUR SOLUTION

With our platform, victims send codified emojis through SMS to request help, which we process through the Nexmo API. Our platform directs these requests to the appropriate channels for assistance: Organizations and Services (like the Red Cross or Coast Guard), Volunteers, and the Local Community.

Next, volunteers that have joined the platform and have resources available, such as boats or extra food and water, are alerted to requests near them, and can take on requests best suited for them. List and map views powered by MapQuest show nearby requests and regions to avoid due to emergency rescue services or hazards. They can review and take on requests, and assisted victims are notified by SMS that help is on the way!

Organizations and services can manage incoming requests, providing professional aid where needed, while delegating to available resources like capable volunteers and community groups, ensuring that everyone gets the help they need!

OUR INSPIRATION

With the recent number of natural disasters, including hurricanes Harvey and Irma, our team wanted to build something that could help the future survivors of natural disasters. Our focus from the beginning was to make something simple and, most importantly, practical. We researched the challenges faced by victims and rescuers to make sure our solution would be beneficial.
