What inspired us
Individuals suffering from prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, can not easily identify their coworkers, medical professionals, or even their loved ones. This problem isn’t only unique to individuals with prosopagnosia; individuals with Alzheimer's also experience memory loss and brain damage. That’s why we devised a solution called UR Code. UR Code is a mobile and web application designed to tackle this issue. Similar to how we recognize faces by examining their eyes, mouths, lips, nose, and just about every other facial feature, we train a program to do much the much through the process of “machine learning.” With this, along with the use of the phone camera, UR Code is able to save and remember an individual's face, along with other necessary data. We simply open the application and the camera is ready to scan a face. Along with the easy to use mobile application, we also provided the user with an accessible website to help them better understand the application which can be found at link which we were able to use in thanks to link Ease of access is important to use, and we hope our solution reflects that mentality.
How we built it
For the mobile phone application, the UR Code team used Java and Android Studio. as for the associated website our team used HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Bootstrap, as well as utilizing the Kairo Facial Recognition API to track and store the facial encoding.
Challenges we faced
Some challenges that we're proud to have overcome is implementing machine learning when it came to facial recognition. This is a major accomplishment for us since this is the first time that we implemented machine learning in any of our projects. In addition, we're very proud of overcoming hardware failures and difficulties. We learned a great many things throughout this entire process. We had to quickly learn and implement our workflow using Github. Machine learning was a huge feature we had to learn and implement for both the website and the mobile phone application, specifically when it comes to facial recognition. And while some of us of the team have experience Android app development, we had to quickly understand and adapt various API's to fit our vision.
What's next for UR Code
We hope to keep improving UR Code by making it even more accessible by implementing voice commands and text to speech. Along with being able to provide UR Code to Apple Users, we also hope to implement social media integration to provide a more personable experience.
