Inspiration

VibeLingo was inspired by the many times millennial and older-generation colleagues expressed confusion when encountering modern internet slang. We noticed that these misunderstandings often created small but frequent communication gaps, and we wanted to build a lighthearted yet useful tool to help bridge that divide.

What it does

VibeLingo helps users unfamiliar with Gen-Z/Gen-Alpha language understand modern internet slang through context, tone, and situational appropriateness. It features a slang translator, interactive quizzes, and a curated dictionary, supported by streak badges that encourage continuous learning.

How we built it

We began by planning the overall layout, user flow, and core features of the website. The project was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with careful consideration of colours, visuals, and interactions to match the playful yet educational tone of the platform. Throughout development, we continuously iterated on the design as new ideas emerged, such as the streak badge system and dictionary feature.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was designing the platform from the perspective of millennials and older generations, despite being Gen-Z ourselves. Understanding what might feel confusing or overwhelming to users outside our generation required us to constantly step back and rethink how features were presented.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a fully functional web application within a limited timeframe while keeping it intuitive and engaging. In particular, we are proud of the streak badge system, which turns learning slang into a motivating daily habit rather than a one-time experience.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned that even a single word can carry multiple meanings depending on context and tone, especially in modern slang. We also learned that impactful solutions do not always require large platforms or organisations. It can be done through thoughtful, small-scale tools to effectively address real-world problems.

What's next for VibeLingo

In the future, we hope to expand VibeLingo’s slang dictionary, introduce future generations' specific content, and add more interactive learning modes; even a mobile application! We also aim to refine personalisation features so users can learn slang that is most relevant to their social or professional contexts.
