Inspiration
It all started 5 years ago in Horizon when Laex (Vidyuu) began his creator journey. The struggle to learn how to code and create, is what inspired Laex to start the Vidyuu Tutorials YouTube channel. He began posting tutorials about the many things he was learning and answering the countless community questions he found in the Horizon Facebook group. One tutorial almost every day for a year straight! To date, Vidyuu has made over 1,000 tutorials on Horizon Worlds!
Helping creators get through their initial struggles, and find the immense joy in creation on the other side, is what the Vidyuu team values most. In the early days of primitives and CodeBlocks, Vidyuu built well over 100 assets, shared individually to 2,000+ creators, creating the very infamous, Vidyuu Essentials Bundle. These days, Typescript and Custom Models are absolutely the way to go. Many of those original assets also didn't support mobile, we saw this as the perfect opportunity to reimagine many of the originals plus numerous new assets.
Team
The Vidyuu team is comprised of many talented creators. We have GalacticVictoria & FlexedTie as our creative leads. Their adept knowledge of 3D modeling and Blender made for so many beautiful assets! There's of course Laex05 (Vidyuu), who dabbles in a bit of everything, but pairs it with platform expertise to make sure the world and assets are bug free and optimized. Laex's left and right hands might very well be, OspreysPJs and LexyRoses333, who are incredibly talented coders and creative thinkers. Some of the most intricate scripts in this world came right out of their brains. Not to mention Lexy's attention to detail for polish and effects. And we can't forget to mention the incredible programming students, Napster25, Karso22, and Gten! They came into Horizon with zero game dev experience and after their summer internship program, were making incredible assets for this build! We are very excited to see what they'll accomplish in the future!
What it does
The Vidyuu Essentials Template comes with an incredible starter pack of assets and utility scripts. Some of which were developed over the course of many months last year, and have been used in every Vidyuu world and collab since. This quick start is easy to read, modify, and make your own. Even beginners can learn how to code Typescript, just by reading the scripts. Our goal is always to help creators grow their skills!
How we built it
It started with a simple idea, a fun terrain, mountain, and mountain range that could be torn apart and customized into your own fun world. Making these modular was very important to us. After that, our team took a field trip to visit all of the various Vidyuu asset worlds that have been created over the years. By the end of the night, we knew we had to remake some of these classics, but better! The next day at our usual 10am meeting, assets were assigned and we got to work! During the program, we would bounce ideas, review each others code, and riff, making up new assets from time to time whenever inspiration struck. We had a blast making this world and we can't wait to see how the community reacts and reinvents these assets into new amazing experiences!
Challenges we ran into
With competitions, there is always the time constraint, we would have loved to hit 100 assets, but nearly 40 is not bad at all, especially with the number of custom model items built by FlexedTie and GalacticVictoria!
One area our team had to reel in was feature creep. It is so much fun to over prescribe what an asset does. So we often had to take a step back with an idea, leaving the door open ended for remixing and reimagining. This often looked like, cleaner code, easy to add your own effects and features (especially thinking about the magic wand, which is setup with two default functions, but can easily be added on to).
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Having so many of our favorites, we have a new world in the works, and you will find almost every script in this world in our new world!
Collaborating and getting all of our schedules aligned, between some of us with work, and school starting up, it was quite the endeavor! Adding to which we planned ahead and had set soft deadlines to help us not be crunching too hard at the last minute, which really helped reduce stress.
What we learned
We learned a lot about 3D modeling and importing. A ton of new Blender tricks, not to mention vertex painting. We discovered the immense impact of metal and roughness, and easy ways to apply the effects to certain parts of our models.
On the coding side, we all have different backgrounds, and bringing these various scripts together in one world has shown each of us something new, we didn't know before. From little math tricks with raycast, to more complex ways of storing data and functions. Not to mention, a better understanding of how to use the properties panel to give users more customizable parameters.
What's next for the Vidyuu Essentials
Over this past summer we have been launching new assets to the public asset library regularly, and we have no intention of stopping. It starts with a fun tutorial idea, which turns into an asset, and then we get to see what creators do with them. One of our favorites was the dancing NPCs, we've been tagged in Instagram posts from dance parties taking place across Horizon, so cool, and very rewarding!
Be on the lookout for our new world, dropping sometime next month, and all the assets we're sure to share along the way. We'll see you in Horizon! Byeeeee! :)
