Inspiration
With the recent influx in new Canadian citizens, many see a new light in their lives safe from the political turmoils from their home country. Adjusting to a new country is one of the most difficult things a person could go through, and many feel as though they are isolated in this new and unfamiliar place. To overcome this barrier that many people may go through, we've decided to create We-CAN, an interactive web application that is easy accessible to anyone with a computer and can direct refugees or new comers into this country to many vital aspects of our society.
What it does
By pinpointing a user's location, it has a query of useful categories of places a new resident may need to integrate into Canadian society properly. By clicking on these queries, a person can get the location and details of useful locations without ever having to search for it themselves (that's where we came in).
How we built it
Created a webapp that has a simple UI
Challenges we ran into
Learning Jquery was a pain
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Starting from scratch in javascript and jquery was a large hurdle for this project, but we manage to surpass that and achieve a functional prototype web app
What we learned
making web apps is not as easy as we imagined
What's next for We-CAN
Beautiful UI, Mentor-Mentee System to aid in specific needs for new comers, a "game-ification" of the webapp for younger audiences, and a fully developed and easy to use forum system.
