Inspiration

Usually we use social media like Instagram, Reddit, or TikTok to connect with people, however, since those sites are geared towards the general public, it's not guaranteed to be safe for teenagers like us. That's why we went searching for teen-only sites, only to see that they're unsafe and unmoderated, leading to children being exploited right in the main chatroom. With this, teenagers have been reported to have mental health issues, but do not recieve the same care as an adult would due to the lack resources and knowledge that teenagers do in fact suffer from mental health problems as well. Which is why we created WellTalk, inspired by research into teen mental health challenges and the growing difficulty young people face when expressing themselves online. Many teens dealing with stress, anxiety, or emotional struggles often feel misunderstood, dismissed, or “shut out” when they try to talk about their experiences. While exploring studies and discussions around teen mental health and communication barriers, we realized there’s a real gap: young people need a safe, non-judgmental space where they can speak freely without fear of being ignored or judged. WellTalk was created to bridge that gap by combining technology with emotional support.

What it does

WellTalk is a supportive communication platform designed to help users express their thoughts and connect in a safe environment. It allows users to: -Share their thoughts or feelings openly -Engage in supportive conversations -Receive thoughtful responses instead of dismissal -Access a space designed for respectful interaction The platform focuses on making communication feel safe, especially for users who may not feel heard elsewhere. WellTalk connects teens with discussion boards. These discussion boards will be heavily moderated and posts will only be removed when it violates guidelines directly pinned above the board. All users are recommended to use an alias while using the site and not their real name for privacy. With these discussion boards, teens can safely ask questions and answer them without the fear of being judged, as this is a safe space for all.

How we built it

We built WellTalk using a modern full-stack approach: Frontend: Flutter for a smooth and accessible mobile experience Backend: Firebase (Firestore for real-time database, Authentication for user accounts) Real-time system: Enabled live updates so conversations feel immediate and interactive UI/UX Design: Soft, minimal interface to reduce stress and encourage open expression We focused heavily on creating a system that feels simple, fast, and emotionally comfortable to use.

Challenges we ran into

There was a huge challenge regarding connecting the backend and the frontend of our code as we worked separately first and connected it later. However, after over 6 hours of trial and error we can say it was definitely an experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built WellTalk using a modern full-stack approach: Frontend: Flutter for a smooth and accessible mobile experience Backend: Firebase (Firestore for real-time database, Authentication for user accounts) Real-time system: Enabled live updates so conversations feel immediate and interactive UI/UX Design: Soft, minimal interface to reduce stress and encourage open expression We focused heavily on creating a system that feels simple, fast, and emotionally comfortable to use.

What we learned

We learned that there were many variables to account for when creating a project like this, you'll have to cosnider the user base and how their experience matters, the security measures needed, and the features that we take for granted on the modern social media sites of today.

What's next for WellTalk

-Introduce AI-assisted supportive responses for users -Add stronger moderation and safety systems -Build anonymous mode for more private expression -Expand into voice-based communication features -Improve personalization to better support individual emotional needs WellTalk hopes to become more than a virtual site, and possibly branch out physically with locations that are active safe spaces for teenagers to connect and discuss about mental health!
