Inspiration
WellWorld began from a simple observation. Whenever disasters struck or communities needed help, people wanted to act but often lacked a system that could unite them efficiently. Group chats and scattered spreadsheets carried so much goodwill yet reached so few. We wanted to create something that could give that compassion structure, visibility, and momentum. WellWorld was born from the belief that empathy deserves infrastructure, that kindness should be as scalable as technology itself.
What it does
WellWorld allows volunteers to explore global opportunities through an interactive 3D globe. It connects people in real time, providing intelligent recommendations powered by Gemini AI that match skills, interests, and availability with meaningful projects. Users can chat, plan, and collaborate with others around the world while watching their collective impact unfold. It turns volunteering into something immersive, intelligent, and joyful.
How we built it
The frontend was built with React and Globe.gl to display opportunities as interactive markers on a rotating globe. Supabase powers authentication and real-time communication while FastAPI handles backend logic and AI integration. Gemini analyses both volunteer profiles and opportunity descriptions to generate personalised matches using natural language processing. Each layer was designed to make the user experience feel effortless, responsive, and human-centred.
Challenges we ran into
Designing a seamless experience across continents brought technical and creative challenges. Ensuring that live collaboration worked smoothly required careful tuning of synchronisation and data flow. Making Gemini’s recommendations feel human required deep experimentation with prompt design and context handling. Rendering the globe responsively on devices with different capabilities tested every optimisation trick we knew.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Building a working prototype that brings together real-time collaboration, AI-powered matching, and an interactive 3D globe felt like a milestone. Seeing the system connect simulated volunteers and produce meaningful recommendations confirmed the idea’s potential. We are proud of creating a foundation that already demonstrates how technology can transform empathy into organised global action.
What we learned
Building WellWorld showed that real impact lies in the intersection of empathy and engineering. We learned how to bridge three-dimensional visualisation with conversational AI and how to design for trust, speed, and emotion all at once. We also learned that technology can carry warmth when it is built with care.
What's next for WellWorld
The next step is to bring WellWorld to mobile so that volunteering feels accessible anywhere. We are also planning to integrate partnerships with nonprofit organisations and expand the AI system to help volunteers manage travel, logistics, and goal tracking. The long-term vision is to make WellWorld the digital heartbeat of global volunteering, where anyone can find purpose and connection no matter where they are.
