Inspiration
Our inspiration came from moving out of dorms at UIUC. We bought many tools that helped reduces the amount of trips we needed to make between our dorms and our new apartment. We realized that these tools are left unused, however, there's always someone who may need them. This situation doesn't only appear in moving but also other situations people might face where they don't want to buy an new item despite needing it.
What it does
WeRent is a platform that allows users to rent out items from other users who wishes to lend these items to other users. We allow users to post listings of items available for rent on the website so other users can come and see if they can find what they're looking to rent
How we built it
Our primary tech stack was MongoDB, Express, React, and Node (MERN). Aside from the technology used, we were always thinking about what made the most sense for a user renting/posting items for others to rent.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge we ran into was connecting the backend to our frontend. We weren't the most familiar with the MERN tech stack. However, we were able to overcome it through extensive documentation reading and consulting our technical mentors during the hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our proudest achievement was overcoming our main challenge. At first, many of us were frustrated by the situation, however, we stuck through it and were able to produce working code.
What we learned
We learned a lot more about MERN and most importantly how to translate solutions to real-world problems into code
What's next for WeRent
We wish to continue develop our website to include the features we envision this platform to have and polish the website a bit more by having a nicer UI
