Inspiration
As a group of young women, our team has first hand-experience with gender-based discrimination and hardship. From the inconveniences of periods and stress to the traumatizing experiences of illness and assault, women have to endure gender-based struggles for their entire lives. Because of this, I, Alessandra Fusaro, with Amelia Otto and Maria Ramos created WOMENTALITY.
What it does
WOMENTALITY is a website where women can learn (almost) everything about being a woman. From articles on Toxic Shock Syndrome to an anonymous forum, WOMENTALITY is a collection of resources made by women, for women.
How we built it
Our team split up our task into sections, with Amelia handling research, Maria handling the HTML, and Alessandra (me) handling the forum. As our team began building our website, we ran into a major challenge.
Challenges we ran into
Initially, we wanted to use the Google Cloud Firestore Database to create the forum. The goal was to take the user’s statement, store it in the database, and then display all of the statements within a feed. However, after hours of research, we found that all of the available online tutorials for Firebase in HTML were outdated, incompatible with the current Firestore documentation. With little time left, we were forced to abandon our original plan.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In the few hours we had left, our team worked on a new forum written in Python. And now, at 8:15 PM, we have finished with a functional website! Although the forum didn’t turn out the way we originally intended, it actually makes us even prouder of our finished product.
What we learned
Despite our feelings of disappointment and stress, we were able to turn around and put together the beautiful, functional website, still accomplishing our original goal. Leaving this experience, we have all learned the value of hard work, and how maintaining a positive mindset can be the key to accomplishing your goals.
What's next for WOMENTALITY
In the future, we hope to implement the Firestore Database into our forum, enrich our resources weekly, and begin releasing newsletters to share our research with subscribers.
