Inspiration for Yoga
We (team members Tonia Sanzo and Wyatt Matt) wanted to make a video game for DandyHacks 2020! We came up with a Yoga rhythm game to challenge our skills and creativity, but also to put a unique spin on a genre that many others and ourselves enjoy. In our game the player follows a yoga master, posing with the rhythm while relaxing in a peaceful scenery, the game is complemented with hip-hop beats. Our goal was to make a fun game while improving our art, design, and coding skills.
What is Yoga
Yoga is a desktop game developed in C++ and SDL2. We created all of the art for the game using Aseprite & Pyxel Edit, and procured royalty free music from the Free Music Archive, and edited audio with Audacity. Ideally we wanted to create our own music, but loved what we found and decided against doing it ourselves in favor of professional beats. In our game the player controls a young monk practicing yoga, and changes their pose according to the arrows on screen. Player score is kept track in combos which are displayed in the terminal during and after gameplay.
Challenges we ran into
We had tons of fun and enjoyed the coding and creation process. We had typical issues along the way tuning SDL2 but are very happy to have overcome them. The main issue we had was timing, because of the important nature of the timing we now have a better grasp of this tool and hope to use these new skills in our future projects.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Our game of course! We are very excited to have made what we can call our first game and are happy to share it with you guys.
What's next for Yoga
We had a lot of fun creating Yoga, ideas kept rolling in of features to add and ways to improve the game.
