Inspiration

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, humanity’s negative impact on the environment has weakened. This goes to show how even the smallest actions like not going out as often can help decrease our carbon footprint. That is why we decided to create a website called “Your Future”.

What it does

The goal of Your Future is to help with understanding and being aware of the significance of the choices we make daily. “Your future” allows for people to track their sustainable AND unsustainable choice, and see the impact of their actions when they accumulate. “Your future” website does it in a fun and interactive way through a checklist. When people record their actions on a regular basis, they gain points for sustainable choices and as their points increase, an image that starts out as the future we are heading towards at this rate filled with pollution and litter slowly changes to a brighter future with clear skies, plants, and trees. The website also includes a feature that allows for people near each other to trade items. This allows people to save money as well as reduce waste and CO2 emissions that result from the production of new items. People will receive points for both tradings as well as donations. Although the trading and the points aspects have not been completed yet, we plan to continue working on those aspects for the website in the future.

How we built it

Our team used HTML/CSS to build the layout of the website which includes the homepage, the checklist page, the future page and the trade page (coming soon).

Challenges we ran into

We had challenges initially using a collaborating software that worked with everybody but were able to settle with VisualStudioCode for our programming. Later on, we ran into bigger issues with our Javascript code and therefore weren't able to fully complete that portion of our website code.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

This competition was the first hackathon for every member of our team. we are proud of each other. In the past 24 hours, we attended every single activity, slept for less than 3-5 hours, and worked together as a team. We cannot wait for our work to be judged. Our team worked really hard on this and given time, I am sure we would have created a nice start-up business.

What we learned

We learned how to troubleshoot our problems in a short period of time which built a sense of trust amongst ourselves. We also learned to be more realistic in our future goals when working on such projects in a limited amount of time.

What's next for YourFuture.io

Along with finalizing the points and trading systems, we hope to finalize the News page which links the viewer to various up-to-date news articles about environmental issues so people remain aware of what is happening in the world in regards to the environment. Being aware and educated on these issues allows for people to make better choices in their lives and understand that climate change is real and a problem.

Additionally, in the future, we hope to improve the interactivity with the image of “Your Future”. This can be done in many ways, like animating the picture, having multiple at once that one can scroll through (oceans, urban areas, suburban, atmospheres), separating parts of the image into different sections that increase carbon footprint, like polluted air, acidification of water, waste management, and etc. These kinds of features would then easily translate into refining the game-like experience of our website that serves to attract people to use our product. The points you earned can now be ‘spent’ on different parts of images to improve that specific section. UX related features aside, we believe that if this idea launches, unless we can attract sponsors, we will follow a non-profit business model. Some other ways we thought we could use technology to slow down climate change is to add donation links for research on technology against climate change or help people that were displaced due to natural disasters. Those could give you EXTRA many more points.
