Inspiration

Whenever the YRConnect team wanted to meet up for volleyball games or study sessions at Cornell Library, we had a hard time navigating through the site, oftentimes needing to go through tedious processes to book courts or study rooms. Beyond just organizational recreational activities, we found the process of reporting broken streetlights and fallen trees difficult, as many of the websites were outdated. YRConnect aims to solve these municipal problems by merging these services into a mobile app, as well providing other solutions to issues others in the community may find.

What it does

YRConnect is a centralized mobile app that brings together all services provided by our local district, York Region. It allows residents to request important services such as large item pickup, street maintenance, and snow removal. The app includes community updates, where inhabitants are able to find information about local news, events, festivals and arts and culture programs, as well as provide their own takes on current city projects. Furthermore, YRConnect simplifies the booking process for sports facilities and study rooms where user information is linked to their accounts, eliminating the need for repetitive data entry.

How we built it

We built this on Figma

Challenges we ran into

  • Aubree didnt know how to figma before this and she never bothered to watch a single tutorial so wonton zhao had to card carry and was spewing out 10 pages per hour
  • Winston zhao tired af
  • Spent 30 minutes on colour palette

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Aubree learned how to figma (somewhat)
  • Ui is crispy af

What we learned

  • New Figma tools
  • Better use of autolayout

What's next for YRConnect

  • A reporting system where user are allowed to upload an optional photo and ML will be used to determine if the image is a high/low priority or if it is a fake report
  • Add a list of job listings and volunteer opportunities
