Inspiration

Zero-In was inspired by our real-world problem of procrastination. Too often do we find ourselves scrolling endlessly rather than focusing on important tasks. We wanted a way to easily block us off social media websites, which led to our idea of the Zero-In Chrome extension.

What it does

Zero-In is a Chrome-based extension that improves your efficiency by honing in on your work. Zero-In blocks unproductive websites while the user is in Productivity Mode.

How we built it

Zero-In was built on a node.js framework to write a Chrome-based extension. We broke down our assignments by splitting our project goals into frontend and backend. Our frontend developer, Alek Dussuau, was focusing on GUIs using HTML and CSS. While the backend was left to Vasilios Voyatzoglou, and Adrian Negreira, where we used Javascript and the Chrome API to build a functioning extension.

Challenges and what we learned

This was our group’s first significant attempt at using both HTML and Javascript. This project was a trial by fire and escalated our knowledge in these languages. Working on Zero-In has made us more confident working with Chrome-based extensions and using Google APIs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that every aspect of the extension we talked about on the first night was implemented into our final code.

What's next for Zero-In

The next big goals for Zero-In are to optimize the user interface by adding a way to see the list of blocked websites, implement a more clear way to see if productivity mode is off or on, and add more features like a Pomodoro Timer.
