Kauai at last

ImageThis post is  a little late, but needed to be made. Abby and I took a week off around Labor Day and enjoyed a week on Kuaui with her parent at their timeshare. It was my first time to Hawaii, and it was amazing! Absolutely worth the wait.  One of the things I love about Abby is that we share the same attitude toward travel and vacation. We had a blast traveling all over the island, sampling different places to eat, and making time to enjoy each rainbow, sunrise, and sunset.  I'm not going to go over every minute of the trip, but here are the highlights (in no particular order):

Image
Napali Coast
    Image
  • Kayaking to secret falls and fern grotto
  • The Luau, with all the food and the dancing
  • Hiking the Kalalau trail to Hanakapi'ai Waterfall
  • Getting our advanced diver certification
  • Seeing turtles, dragon eels, moray eels, turtles, eagle rays, and sharks. Did I mention turtles?
  • Art night in Hanepei
  • Seeing the Napali coast from a catamaran.
  • Not getting seasick until after the awesome rainbow on the Napali coast
  • Seeing spinner dolphins swimming by our boat
  • Hanging out on the beach(es)
  • Going to our first black sand beach
  • Taking a ridiculous amount of pictures
  • Polihali beach, despite the rental car's companies efforts to thwart
  • Snorkeling at Ke'e beach
  • Queen's bath
  • Glass beach (which should be renamed rust beach)
And here are some of the highlights from eating:
Image
  • Puka dogs
  • Kilauea bakery
  • Kountry Kitchen
  • Ono's Shaved ice
  • Kalaheo Cafe
  • Bubba Burgers
  • Tortilla Republic
  • Duke's
  • Hamura Saimin
And now for some pictures!

Color Vibe LA

OK, weekend craziness is in high gear. We just had some great friends stay with us while they were at Disneyland with their two kids. We had an absolute blast having them stay with us. Their kids were lots of fun, and we got to catch up and just enjoy hanging out. Too bad they live so far away!

Last night we also got to see my cousin and his wife, on their way to Costa Rica. We took them over to the airport around 11:30 (pm) and had made it no more than five minutes away, when they called to let us know their flight had been cancelled. No prob. We can roll with that. So we did some late night grocery shopping (since we were out of milk) and headed home to wait for them to get everything taken care of. 2:30 - we picked them up. and got a few hours of sleep before dropping them off at the airport. I'm so glad we're close enough to the airport to give them a quick and better night's sleep than sleeping on the floor!

Then there was this morning's trip to Pomona. It was a mad dash, but we made it. Check out these picks from our latest 5K. I'll post more from last weekend's 5K later, but you can enjoy these for now.
And now we're on our way to Santa Barabara to see Snow Patrol!

Gotta run. Show starts in 3 hours, with 2 hours of driving ahead of us.

Revolutionary!

Ok, that's admittedly a bit of a misleading title since this really isn't something super revolutionary. Life changing? Perhaps mildly so. I have to say that the combination of Tron Legacy and swimming makes for a much quicker workout. I had no idea what I was missing! This was by far one of the best recent purchases I've made. I have yet to see how it holds up over time, but it was a great little mp3 player. I just tucked it up in my goggles band and was good to go. As an added benefit, it was a lot cheaper than a waterproof case and no risk of a leak springing. While I love swimming anyway, this just makes it even better! Now if I could just find a way to clear out the other swim lanes...

Yosemite

Abby and I spent a long weekend exploring yosemite with or good friends the Thiots. We took Friday off and drove up late thursday night. Of course that was the one night that I had to stay a little late, we had a late start to the drive. We had great weather the whole trip and were able to avoid most of the crowds.  We also got to take a lot of great pictures. Friday afternoon we took a rafting trip down the river, which was a great break from the sun. We spent saturday out in the high country, which kept us out of the crowds. I'll haver to post some better pics later, but needless to say it was amazing. Definitely a trip to go back later.

Memory Lane

It's great to go home. Always is. I've moved around a lot over the years, but I grew up in Dallas and Indianapolis. This week I was able to go to both Dallas and Indianapolis. I was in Dallas for some training classes, but was able to get out in the evening and see some of the places I remember from my childhood. I saw the old elementary school, the houses I lived in, the bookstores, parks, and swimming pools I went to, and so on. It was great! I didn't get a chance to get any Blue Bell while there, but I will find a way to get some!

ImageThe Dallas Aquarium was a fun part of the visit as well. It's definitely not a huge place, but they do have some great exhibits. I've never been to an aquarium with a zoo in it! This was kind of like one big mixed ecosystem. Flamingos and jungle birds were standing and flying around over an adjacent tank of sharks and rays. Pretty cool all in all. I was also able to take that picture of downtown Dallas that I've always wanted to take!

I took a quick flight back to LA to pick up Abby, sleep and then get back on a plane to Indy. We came super close to missing the race, courtesy of Delta Airlines. They had mechanical problems and wouldn't let us off the plane, even though we had confirmed seats on another flight, and they were letting other passengers off with flights to Florida. Fortunately, my sister was able to get our race packets picked up without our ID, or our smiling faces. Big score for my sister. Low marks for Delta!

ImageThis time Abby and I ran part of the race together - the first five miles or so. She had given me her blessing to run this one on my own, and after a while I took her up on the offer. Since I'd run a 2:08 a few weeks ago, I figured breaking 2 shouldn't be too bad. I ran a 1:59. I do math when I run. I'm constantly calculating my pace, my estimated time at the finish, and what splits I need to hit to make my time. So I knew exactly where I was, and I knew that I couldn't let up at the end. That made for a painful finish with a foot full of blister. Oh well. It was a great race though. I've run this race since grade school, so this was something like my 15th year or so. Maybe more. I've lost track of it.

I loved this trip though. It was so much fun even though it was short to spend some time with my sister and her husband. Living across the country, we don't get to spend as much time together in person, and this was absolutely fabulous! They are a lot of fun, and it's just plain great to be together. Plus, they both ran the race and did quite well I thought! So we could all celebrate our victories (and soreness) together!

ImageTrips home are always too short. We were thrilled to see so many of our friends at church on Sunday, and sad that we had to parachute in and then jet out so quickly. I'll take what I can get though, and am always grateful and happy to see so many of the many great people that influenced my life and shaped my childhood. I have to admit though. I was pretty beat after the race and a week of travel.

Take the Southwest by Storm

Alright, I'm catching up on blogging. It's been a busy spring. Abby and I just returned from running the Moab Half Marathon in Utah. We drove out to take advantage of some time off and a much needed vacation. I guess that's part of the whole work hard, play hard strategy. At any rate, I had a lot of the trip planned out - meaning I had identified lots of opportunities along the way to take pictures. Sunrise here, sunset there, a variety of shots in between. We weren't able to pack everything in, but we sure tried! Here's a basic rundown of the trip.

Image
Thursday - hit the road and park for a while on the LA highways while we think about how late we'll be getting into St. George. The plan is to check out sunrise in Zion National Park, and that means lots of driving. We take a quick detour down the strip while we're in Vegas. At least it was worth the look. We'll have to spend some more time here later!

We roll into St. George around 1, or midnight, or whenever. We were pretty tired. But we slept so great, and then decided we'd just hang out in the morning with my Aunt and Uncle, who have a place there.

Image
Friday - Sleeping in was the right thing to do, definitely! We went out to breakfast with my aunt and uncle. Black Bear Diner is a great place to eat in St George if you're in the mood for good food and lots of it! It was a total bonus to the trip to be able to spend some good time catching up with family too! We still had plenty of time to get to Zion and hike a little bit of the Narrows. I love that hike, but I realized that this is the earliest in the year that I've done it and the water was both higher and colder. It's a little nerve racking hiking in that kind of water with a camera in hand, but I can't see myself getting along any other way. We enjoyed our time in Zions a little too much and had to really work to get to Moab in time. We arrived just in time to run into the expo and pick up our race numbers as they were putting everything away and cleaning up.  Second bonus of the day- getting to Pasta Jay's just in time for our food to arrive and enjoy dinner with Craig and Jeremy.

It's a staple part of every half marathon in Moab, and it was great to see Jeremy and Craig. We always have a great time, and it's one of the reasons I look forward to that race. The race is great and all, but running it with friends is even better!

Image
Saturday - I was thinking this would be a cold race, and it sure didn't turn out to be that way! In fact, the weather was great, if you ignore the 15-20 mph head wind. Honestly, I had a great race. Abby and I ran together, and I just enjoyed running with her. Plus, the scenery is great. This should be my ninth or tenth time running this race, so there's always a sense of being home and comfortable. We ran a 2:08. Not my best time for sure, but I'd felt a bit less than healthy a few weeks going in, and there was a pretty big head wind. So I was thrilled. Time for more post-canyonlands rituals - the walk through the souvenir shops to find something that could double as a finisher's medal (since they don't have any at this race), a stop by the Moab Brewery for the best onion rings I've ever had, and a short hike to Delicate Arch.  We missed sunset, which was too bad, but I've been there and seen that, so we settled for a slightly after sunset version, with a walk back in the almost dark.

ImageSunday -  I had really high hopes to photograph mesa arch in Canyonlands at sunrise. We actually did get up before dawn to make the trip and made it about 5 minutes away before it started blowing hard, then raining, then snowing. All at once. I think the winds were about 20 mph or so, and there was no way that we were even going to get a glimpse of sunrise, so we headed back, slept in, and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast.

ImageWe did end up going to Canyonlands, and while we were there it snowed a lot. We were looking over the Green River Overlook when the snow stopped and the winds picked up just enough to blow out the clouds covering the overlook. Absolutely breathtaking view! So we explored Canyonlands for the better part of the day before getting back on the road to get to Monument Valley.  We made it there just before or rather at sunset. I was able to get a couple pictures before calling it a night. We'd planned on camping, but better judgement and lower temperatures prevailed. The hotel was another great call!

Image Monday -  Lots of driving. We hiked through Antelope Canyon (both upper and lower), got stranded with a dead battery in our guide's truck, hiked up to Horseshoe Bend (see below), and then finished with sunset at the Grand Canyon. It was another crazy rush to chase the light at sunset.                                                                                             Image

Tuesday - The snow and wind cleared out. Did I mention there was a foot of snow on the ground or so at the grand canyon. Camping? Nah. Not with 10 degree temperatures, snow, and high winds. But we did get out before sunrise to freeze our little mittens off while waiting for sunrise. It was magnificent. We had the park to ourselves withe very few people there at all.  We were just about parked out by around noon, so we headed back home to expensive gas and warmer weather. Ah, sweet California! So good to be home!

PS. I took a ton of pictures. The highlights will start showing up slowly on my website, which should launch in the next month or so. I'm working on a few technical issues, a server migration, and then it should go live. Stay tuned!

Big Sur

We took advantage of the President's Day weekend to get out of Dodge and explore some territory with no cell reception. Big Sur case through in a big way! We camped Saturday and Sunday night enjoyed hiking around the beaches and a number of the state parks along the way. On Sunday we were able to catch church in Monterey, and then enjoyed walking along the beaches of Point Lobos. Absolutely incredible. That's what we kept saying again and again as we saw so many beautiful sights. The weather was perfect, despite the foreboding forecast that we'd seen before we left. This is definitely a spot we'll be coming back to visit!

Sailing

January's adventure of the month was courtesy of the Davises. ImageWe were able to get lots of the SoCal Chipman/Davises out on a catamaran to enjoy the great weather, family, and some wonderful sailing. It was so great getting to spend time with our family and enjoy catching up. You also can't beat doing that on a boat! The skipper took great care of us and made it look so easy! It was absolutely wonderfully relaxing, which was a welcome break from the furvor of work lately.

We set out of long beach and cruised up the coast for a bit before heading back and enjoying some California Pizza Kitchen in the evening. The girls even scored some freebies from the International Spa and Beauty Convention, which was going on that night in Long Beach. Who knew? Anyway, here are a couple of the pics from the day for all to enjoy.
