Home Coming Talk

When my dad told me of my topic a couple weeks ago I thought to myself wow, they must have been researching the Dominican Republic because the topic they gave me is a part of the history o f the country. In the middle of the flag there is a bible and it is open to a specific page. It is opened to John 8:32 which states,“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” This is probably one of the most quoted scriptures in the world. I think it is because it teaches a basic principle of the gospel. It is truth that sets us free. Understanding and practicing the gospel makes us free. But the question is why is it important that we learn? This life is a time to learn, an opportunity to grow in knowledge and light. In Doctrine and Covenants section 130 verses 18 and 19 read, Whatever principle of aintelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the bresurrection And if a person gains more knowledge&nbspand intelligence in this life through his  diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the cadvantage in the world to come.”
Therefore learning is essential for our eternal progress. And in verse 31 of the 8th chapter of John it explains how we can learn. Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
And ye shall aknow the btruth, and the ctruth shall make you free.” First off let us recognize that Jesus was talking to those that believed on him or in other words the people that had faith in Him. He then explained to them what they needed to do. He said continue in my word. In other words do as he had taught and shown by his example. Those that do what he has taught and those that try to be like him will become his disciples and they shall know the truth that will make them free. In my time in the Dominican Republic I can think of many people that truly have become disciples of Christ. In my last area I met the first counselor of the ward and I felt like the man had 20 or more years in the church. Later on I found out that he has less than 3 years as a member of the church. What I learned from this man was incredible. He has truly dedicated himself to the gospel. He has read books such as Jesus the Christ and The Miracle of Forgiveness and not only has he read them he has put them in practice. That man is a wonderful example for me. Another amazing man that I taught while on the mission is a shining example of being a follower of Christ. A few days before Christmas in 2011 my companion and I had just gotten back to our area after the mission Christmas party and so we went to the streets to look for someone to talk to. Nobody wanted to talk to us at all. We wandered around until we got a little discouraged and went to a members house. We hadn’t really become friends of this family or anything but we began to talk with the husband and he told us he would like our help to visit a less active member. Of course we said we’ll help and so he took us over to the man’s house. We got there and he wasn’t home but his brother was home and let us in to share something with him. We talked about his health, he had suffered some strokes recently, and we talked about his belief in God. We set up a return date and left. The next 3 times we passed by he wasn’t there so we decided to move onto other people to teach. Two months later while on exchanges with a missionary who was on his second day in the mission we ran out of things to do. All of our plans failed us in the morning. We tried to visit members and nothing absolutely nothing. It didn’t help because it was noon and at noon in the Dominican Republic everyone is eating and I mean everyone. But the last person we tried to visit wasn’t home and we ended up in front of the old referral’s house. We went to go talk to him and we found him there and began to teach about the restoration. He was thoroughly interested. He said he would go to church and that Sunday he went. He was prepared to be baptized in less than six weeks and has been a solid member ever since. A year after his baptism I asked the missionaries about him to see how he was doing and they told me that he was leaving to do visits with them and giving them referrals. It made me so happy to be able to help Bienvenido find the truth that he so desperately needed in his life.
I feel like it is a pretty basic concept. People that have faith and practice what the Savior said by continuing in His word will be able to find the truths they need to help make them free. My mission president focused a lot on chapter 6 of preach my gospel because it focuses on the attributes of Christ and trying to become more like him in every facet of our lives. The truths I have learned from studying and putting these things in practice have made me a free person. I can be free from the temptations of Satan through obedience to my Father in Heaven and the atonement of our Savior. But how can these truths get to the people of the world? Elder Rasband of the Presidency of the Seventy stated, “Missionary work is the lifeblood of the Church and the lifesaving blessing to all who accept its message.” It is through the missionaries that over 250,000 people get baptized every year. It is because they are called to serve and set apart with the great calling to be a missionary.
In my time as a missionary I had many great uplifting experiences and tons of difficult trials but one thing that always helped me was to see the people change. But they only changed when they had faith and did what the Lord asked them. One great example from my mission was a 26 year old man that we found named Miguel Castillo. Right off the bat we didn’t think he had much desire to learn. I mean he was really quiet and that is quite unusual for a mid twenties Dominican male. So we set an appointment to return and when we returned he had read everything and basically had it memorized. He loved the story of the restoration and understood it. He went to church, we taught him everything he needed to know to get baptized but he just didn’t have the desire to get baptized. The really good thing with him was he loved to read what we left him so we gave him Alma 32, a chapter that talks about how our faith is like a seed, and we hoped he would really understand it. When went back he told us he wanted to get baptized. He read to us from Alma but not the part we hoped he’d read us He shared verses 16 through 18 which read, “Therefore, blessed are they who humble themselves without being compelled to be humble; or rather, in other words, blessed is he that believeth in the word of God, and is baptized without stubbornness of heart, yea, without being brought to know the word, or even compelled to know, before they will believe. Yea, there are many who do say: If thou wilt show unto us a sign from heaven, then we shall know of a surety; then we shall believe. Now I ask, is this faith? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for if a man knoweth a thing he hath no cause to believe, for he knoweth it.” He felt like Alma was talking to him directly and that was because he put his faith in the Lord and tried to be like Jesus. I left the area that following Tuesday but he was able to be baptized a week after I left. It is amazing what the Lord can do.
The truth makes us free because it keeps us safe from sin. Lehi talks to Jacob in 2nd Nefi chapter 2 and gives him some insights, “Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.” We have been given the wonderful gift of agency that allows us to be free. We are free to choose between life and death and if we want to be truly free we must put our faith in Christ and continue in his word.
Everyone is free to choose. I have a few days in the mission that I can remember like they happened yesterday. On August 1st 2012, I was on an exchange and it was raining like crazy all day. But we were used to it so we continued on. We talked to a few people and then got to one house and called in. A woman that looked a little frazzled came out with her 10 year old and 2 year old kids. She didn’t look very happy. We tried to brighten her day and got her to smile so she let us in. We talked for a little while and there is a quote in preach my gospel that I really like, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland taught: “More important than speaking is listening. These people are not lifeless objects disguised as a baptismal statistic. They are children of God, our brothers and sisters, and they need what we have. Be genuine. Reach out sincerely. Ask these friends what matters most to them. What do they cherish, and what do they hold dear? And then listen. If the setting is right, you might ask what their fears are, what they yearn for, or what they feel is missing in their lives. I promise you that something in what they say will always highlight a truth of the gospel about which you can bear testimony and about which you can then offer more. … If we listen with love, we won’t need to wonder what to say. It will be given to us—by the Spirit and by our friends”. When we listened to her she opened up. We learned that she was a little depressed because she was having family problems but the real reason she opened the door was because her sister was a member of the church but had passed away. We talked to this woman on a Wednesday and put our return appointment for Monday but we left her with an invitation to church on that Sunday. She went with her three kids. It was totally unexpected but awesome. She became super active and went to all the weekly activities. A truly amazing woman. But everyone has their limit and weakness. For 3 months Mirian was super strong and it was exciting to see her and her family progress and then the trial came. There is a reason that Christ commands the people to continue in his word. It is so we can keep exercising our agency correctly and stay free. The hardest part of the process is enduring to the end and for that reason we have been promised eternal life. If we stray from the truth then we lose sensibility to the spirit and desire to do what is right. One great blessing that we have as members of the church is the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is there to teach us truth. He is a guide that helps us make correct choices and warns us of potential problems. In my mission we worked a lot with people that were less active in the gospel. In my last area we had helped two families get back to church and both seemed quite impossible because of their histories. One was an exbishop. He had fallen away because of a few bad feelings he had towards a few members. He had about 5 years inactive. This man is amazing. He told us he wasn’t willing to go back until there were changes in the church and so we followed the spirit and it helped him understand that the baptismal covenant he made was with God and nobody else. Since the spirit reminded him of the truths that he already knew he has been able to get back on track. His goal is to be able to go to the temple again. Another family that we were working with has 20 plus years without attending and after teaching them 3 times the parents decided to visit the church again. The truth is the only thing that can really change people. That is why Alma explains the importance and power of missionary work. In the 31st chapter of Alma verse 5 it states, “And now, as the preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just—yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else, which had happened unto them—therefore Alma thought it was expedient that they should try the virtue of the word of God.” It is the preaching of the word of God that can help the people more than anything else. It is shown by another example but first I want to give a little background. As a missionary you are always looking for people to teach. Any way you can find someone to teach you do it. The most effective way to find someone is through the members. They really are the key to missionary work but many of us are afraid to share the gospel or we say that they already have their beliefs and cannot change but let us take the example of the Gadianton robbers. For those of you that don’t know, the gadianton robbers were a group of thugs that assassinated, robbed and did all kinds of terrible things in the Book of Mormon. But there is something that changed them. In the 6th chapter of Helaman verses 36 and 37, “And thus we see that the Lord began to pour out his Spirit upon the Lamanites, because of their easiness and willingness to believe in his words. And it came to pass that the Lamanites did hunt the band of robbers of Gadianton; and they did preach the word of God among the more wicked part of them, insomuch that this band of robbers was utterly destroyed from among the Lamanites.” It was a group of willing lamanites that taught the gospel to the wicked gadianton robbers and helped them receive the light and truth that they needed. The following is a quote from Emeritus Seventy J William Clarke, he said “Truth … defies full definition. Like electricity it can only be explained by noting its manifestation. It is the compass of the soul, the guardian of conscience, the final touchstone of right. Truth is the revelation of the ideal; but it is also an inspiration to realize that ideal, a constant impulse to live it. As Latter-day Saints, we are committed to the principles of truth. We seek the truth; we believe the truth; and we know the “truth will make us free.” To be genuine disciples, we must have harmony between the principles that we profess and the truths we practice.”

Mike arrived home today June 18, 2013.  We are so excited to see him again and finally have him home.  We made him signs and had the kids hold them up, it might have been their favorite part!  Every time someone in a suit would walk down the terminal walk way the kids would say "is that him?!"

After Mike gave everyone hugs, took pictures, and chatted we headed down to get his luggage and then headed home.  For his first "American"meal -Hungry Howies.

Week 104..

Well, as you all know, I will be home in 8 days or something like that but my life as a missionary ends on Sunday but more on that later.....I think that it is crazy that it has gone by so fast. I remember sitting in church and seeing the returned missionaries speak and thinking, wow, they are old. Is it weird if I don't think that now? I am not that old am I? Well I don't feel like it but maybe I am. Anyways onto the questions for one last time!

Q So pretty weird to say this, but it's your final week in the dr as a missionary. What are you gonna miss the most?
A Not having to worry about myself. I have not had to worry about myself for 2 years and now all of a sudden I have to worry about myself.

Q are you going to write to us next Monday?
A I have no idea. I know that we are going to stay in the Hilton....I don't know if that is good or bad.

Q have you told any of the families in your area that you are going home?
A Yep I have or really my companions have.

Q have they given you any presents?
A. Nope........

Q.  Did you know we are 1/16 Chippewa Indian?
A. I thought we were part Indian but I didn't know how much.

Q are you gonna miss any of the food?
A I think no. Well maybe the fruits because they are better here.

Q are you excited to remember what home is like?
A. Yes I say that I am trunky but I am not a dead missionary. I still love the work but I miss you guys and living comfortably. I am definitely trunky.

Q who do you think has changed the most?
A. I'M going to say Ty just because he was the youngest so he could have changed the most. Us old folk are hard to change we are like rocks that take tons of effort to change.

Q what does this week look like for you?
A. Well, this week will just be a normal week as a missionary except for Friday. On Friday we have a training meeting on how to prepare ourselves for an eternal marriage. But I am going to treat the other days like they are normal days in the mission. Sadly there will be no baptism on Saturday but I am happy with what I have done in this area. We have found a family that is progressing really well and we have reactivated a man that was a bishop and has been inactive for over 10 years. We also are working with a menos activo family that has 8 kids and none of them are members. I have really enjoyed this area.

But that is basically it. I am really thankful for the opportunity that I have had to get to know the people that I have gotten to know. Today I had a pretty cool experience. I went to lunch with some  cool missionaries that I have met in the mission and one of them was Elder Denton. It was funny because we were talking and then he asked me if I remembered that I dreamt one night that I was going to end my mission with Elder Perry and I remember talking with him about that and thinking how ridiculous it seemed at the time. But cool beans. I had a pretty uneventful day today with no much that happened. But it was good and I got to say goodbye to some of my friends. When we come back we will definitely visit with most of them because they will be in their last week in the mission. But anyways I don't know what else to say. I guess Ill have some more to say later. Anyways good talking to you from lejos but it will be nice to talk close up.

The first but not the last,

Well a wonderful week in the neighborhood or not really????

Well as you all know it is a parasite that I have....Cyclospora Cayatenenis or something like that....all I know is that it gives you some really bad stomach pain and tons of desire to vomit but whatever its all good in the hood here. I dont know if  I mentioned it but I am in a trio or Elder Bullen adn I got a nother companion named Elder Perry.....the same one that I trained in El Seibo so that is pretty cool. You guys, mom and dad, will get to meet all the friends I have here in the mission, tons of cool people. But basically this week was go to the doctor to do a test in the morning and then go to the internet center to try and check the results. One day the results didnt  get put on the internet so we had to go all the way back to the lab which is an hour away in guagua.....the experiences in the mission. BUt this week it has rained  a ton here in the DR pretty strong but that is just the way it is. I guess Ill get onto the questions because that is what you want me to talk about.....

Q.  Will you be happy when you don't have to answer some of our lame questions here shortly?

A. Yes and no because I figure I will be answering lots of questions when I get home. I figure it is only fair since I have lived as a missionary asking questions for the lst two years so it is someone elses turn to ask me questions.

Q.  How many chords did Tyler wear at his graudation?
A. Lets see I had 8 or 9 so he at least had 15......

Q.  How quiet was it with Tyler gone for a week?
A. So quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Q.  Did dad mow the grass or save it for Tyler to do when he gets home today?
A. Well I know dad is a good person so he did it(vease también email de mom).

Q.  Name three restaurants you want to eat at when you come home.
A. Outback, Hungry Howies, and Carambas ya know three really classy joints.

But like Alyssa wrote me, it doesnt seem real. I dont feel like I am going home in two weeks. Everybody around me tells me but I dont feel it. I dont know why but it is just that way. KInda weird but I guess I am just weird. I was thinking about something I thought I heard in the last conference, I thought it was President Monson that said it but I havent been able to find the talk so maybe it was just something I felt. But I heard that we need to keep moving on because it is possible that the people we will love most in our lives we still havent met. I hope that makes sense. I feel like it is that way. Who would have known all the people that I met and love here in the DR. Some really amazing people. PEople that I were able to see get baptized, people that I taught and they ultimately rejected the gospel, people that had fallen and we helped them find their way back, and the good old solid people that you can always count on. I love so many of the people that I have met here. I feel like I have new family members and I cant wait to be able to contact them again.......For example HEctor from El Seibo, I called him a little while back and wow that man is amazing. Every chance I get to talk to the missionaries in El Seibo I ask them how he is doing. It is like that with tons of people. I feel like if there is one thing that I have developed in my caring for other people.  But anyways love you  all tons and Ill be on to respond to your emails but love you all tons!

Year One Great Health....Year Two not so much....

Welp still sick and I am pretty sure it was the amoebas again. I've been battling it for 4 days now. But I guess that is all going to be taken care of in 3 weeks. Hermana Hernandez says that she thinks Elder Walker, the mission doctor, probably wont give me another treatment because I have had so many. I hope she is wrong. But that is just a little intro to what has been happening as of late. Onto the questions........

Anything you think you need right away when you get home?

A doctor appointment and maybe a chiropractor appointment because my back is really killing me. I spent 10 months on the new bed and now I have a really crappy old mattress. It is destroying my back. But as of now those are the things I can think of.

Q now that you e lived there this long what is your favorite food.
A Steak and potatoes....Im not going to lie. I liked what they called the bandera, beans, rice, and chicken, but it is pretty boring now. I cant wait to get home to eat some real beef!
My questions:
When is my homecoming talk?(McFarland wants to know)

What should I do for 6 hours in the airport?

I dont know what else to ask....

But this past week was great. On tuesday during lunch or wednesday I dont quite remember, we got a call from the ZLs and they said that we were going to be in a trio and guess who my new comp is.....ELDER PERRY! Isnt that cool that my kid is going to get to kill me in the mission. Kinda weird but awesome. It is kinda difficult to work in a trio but we will make it work. We have found tons of cool people in this area. The other day we were walking down the street and a couple of teenagers started talking to us in english(here they usually do it to try and make fun of us or make some kind of joke) and we for some reason felt the urge to stop and talk to them. We went into their house and talked with the whole family minus 1 kid....it is a family of 8 and they are super cool. We'll definitly try to help them progress. We also have recieved tons of help from the members. It is awesome to see a ward that really cares and works. Before transfers I was praying for that opportunity and the Lord really does answer prayers. BUt that has been our week. Tons of referals from members and members offering to leave with us all the time, I am really enjoying my time here!

But not much more that I can think of......Love me the mostest,

May 20, 2013

Im glad that you all finally got my videos, I hoped you enjoyed it. I didnt realize that I speak in spanish on any of them but I guess that is better than you guys having to hear it on the phone. So as you all should remember the 20th of May I should have been picking up my suit but what do you all think, did the man get it done on time?

I guess it is kinda obvious that I didnt get it because Im sure you didnt even remember that I was supposed to get it today. But his excuse is that it is being drycleaned even though I called him and he told me it would be ready. He had the pants there and I got to try them on and they were awesome.

Question: Do you want me to send a picture home with the suit on when I get it or do you want it to be a surprise?

Other question: Do you all want anything from here? Dad already told me he wanted a tie but I dont know what everyone else wants.........

Q.  We assume you were only trying to give that dog some water and not actually throw water on it, right?

A. Nope the dog was a miscreant that didnt belong in the apartment area and dogs here are like zombies and bring disease.

Q.  Was that chicken in the apartment dinner?   Who killed it?   Skinned it?  Defeathered it?   Your grandpa Maurice knew how to do that.
A. What chicken???? If you are talking about the chicken that was in the apartment running on the desks it wasnt cooked but if you are talking about the baked duck I think I will have to tell you that story after the mission.

Q.  Do they not know that missionaries are not cargo so you shouldn't be riding in the backs of trucks?
A. SOmetimes we get treated like cargo and really it was the best way to get around that area because it was a super big area.

Q.  Why do you always hide your camera when a Dominican comes around - because they might like to "borrow" it?
A. They do like to borrow lots of stuff. THe majority of my companions have been robbed so I guess that should tell you all something.

Welp I would like to get a response to that first question as soon as possible because I would like to get something for you all that you would like I am just afraid that I would buy something and then you guys would have to fake like you like it and then it is just awkward.....I think you get the point. But I have some ideas like for Brando it would be super easy...pfpfpfpfppfpf......but please respond. I would also like to announce that Elder McFarland has finally abandoned me. He doesnt write me so I hope he reads this and decides that he needs to write me. I am in his first area and supposedly everyone loved him here. I really like it because there are tons of people that are super cool. I think that the church could grow super fast here because I mean for example there is a family here that Elder McFarland and Elder Peña baptized 3 years ago and the dad has already read Jesus the Christ twice and the Miracle of Foregiveness and now is reading Doctrine of Salvation....he is the first counselor in the bishopric and an amazing man. He gave us Guanabanas last week and my comp didnt want it so I ate his....you probably dont know what that is, it is called soursop in english and you should look it up it is pretty amazing. We also got a zapote, or sapota for you gringos, shake. Wow it was good. But anyways we ahd a good week kinda. Had tons of help fom members this week. We did splits on thursday night and had a future missionary night on tuesday tht had an attendance of 12 youth so that was cool. I really think that this was an answer to a ton of prayers over the past two years because I really wanted to go to an area where the ward really functioned well to be able to see the difference in the missionary work and there is a ton. A ward that really tries to help the missionaries make it a heck of a lot easier on the missionaries to focus on the people that they are teaching and their needs. But still growing quite a bit. I finished Jesus the Christ for the second time in the mission and all I can say is wow. I am going to try and finish the Book of Mormon before I get home which will definiitely be easy because I have lots of time left and then on the plane and in the airport.....lets just say it is a very reachable goal that I have placed.

Question: Did you guys see how long my layover is in Miami.....6hours! Craziness!

Well I guess that was more like a statement and less like a question. But anyways hope you enjoyed my letter because I dont have much more to say other than love you all and I promise I will write next week!
