Tonight a 3 month old baby died. We tried everything to bring her back but were unsuccessful. The Grandmother put the baby down for a nap and returned to check on the baby but found the baby face down and not breathing. Nate ( paramedic) did mouth to mouth CPR until the rest of the crew arrived. We called for Life Flight and we got the baby in to the back of the ambulance where the flight crew pronounced her dead. The mother and father were invited into the back of the ambulance. Once we disconnected the baby from our equipment I handed the baby to the mother who cuddled the baby into her chest and began to sob. I felt helpless and a sense of failure as a firefighter. Just then I pictured my own wife and daughter in this situation and I had to hold back my emotions while we tried to comfort the family. It was a bad night and the real crappy thing is we pack up and get ready for the next call, we don't get time to relax and deal with our emotions, we just get back on the truck and keep going, we get work through those emotions on our days off. It's a lot of fun for the wife and kids when firefighters come home quiet and a little depressed. So sorry Jamie, I'll be home in two days. Love you.

Folks, it's one thing to park in front of a red curb, but to park on the fire hydrant itself, come on.

This truck was found like this in the Ivory subdivision on 2700w. The truck had been stolen and the kids didn't make the turn. Obviously.

We had a great home to train on. It was donated to us from a couple that
was going to tear it down to build a new home. We practice our ventilation techniques
and a drill that we call wall breaching. Ventilation is a process in which we will
create openings in the roof with a chainsaw and then punch the ceiling drywall off
of the trusses. This creates a "chimney" that will allow the heat, smoke, and gases
to escape from the structure and give the victims a better chance of survival.
It also makes firefighting operations more effective and efficient for firefighters.Image

These holes are what the roof will look like when the job is done.

I am demonstrating different types of foot holds we can use
when up on a steep roof.

Image

We also do wall breaches to evacuate someone who is trapped
and has no other way out. A wall breach is simply making your
own door out of an exsisting wall or window. Takes about 4 minutes.

I included a video to show what we do.

This is a house fire we fought just off 6200s. and 2200w. Paramedics Dave Mau and Nate Bogenshutz were the hero's inside that put out the fire. Captain gale and I shut off the utilities and got to break some glass and doors for ventilation. Engine 52 from West Jordan pumped water for us. We really appreciate are fellow city's for their help.

Cute Mau and Bogenshutz. The two biggest screw offs on the dept.
Maybe that's why their still single.

The boys went over to Jackies Preschool for demonstration and to visit with the kids. I unfortunatly was off.

I Love Bad Car Accidents

Image
Image
Image

I always like the bad car wrecks as long as children and Innocent people aren't involved. If they are impaired, doing makeup or texting on the phone that's when it's a good call because we have so much fun cutting up the cars. We call it extrication because we are extracting the person from the car. We train hard for these kind of things and we have really expensive equipment, so when it's the real deal it is so much fun. I'm talking like a wild ride adrenaline rush, I'm not sure how to explain it I guess you would just need to be there. Talk to Ben Ballou he's ridden with us maybe he could explain it better.

Little Boy Drowned

A 16 month old drowned in a backyard pond today. We were on scene for about 15 min. before Life Flight arrived and they were there another 15 min. We were able to get a heartbeat back but the boy didn't look good at all. If he survives it will be a true blessing for the family. It was a crappy day.

Air Med

This is a just a quick shot of Air Med lifting off with our patient.

A man got his hand smashed in a chairlift at Brighton. We called for a helicopter to maximize the chances of the man keeping his hand.

Let's Settle It

Capt. Torgersen and I have a Tennis dispute that has been ongoing for a few weeks. We tried to settle the score before I received my new station assignment but it didn't happen we still have to break our tie to see who's buying Lime Rickey's. I'll miss the guys at 116 but I'm excited for my new adventure.

Jon Wilde and I lost to Dan Brown and Capt. Torgersen in a game of tennis. You can see from the racket just how hard Dan hits the ball.

Lunch Time

Captain Torgersen's family came by the station to have lunch. We enjoyed their company. We always like it when the families come by to visit. After being away for 48 hours we really begin to miss our families.

I love Saturday Primary activities

We went to a Ward House on Creek Road to give a smoke alarm presentation and then top it off with a water fight. The Primary kids had us up against the ropes and then we broke out the hose and gained our territory back

The Sheriffs Office also assisted in the rescue.

Aug. 2, 2008- A hiker fell from a ledge at Lake Mary and fractured his ankle. It was a 60 min. hike both ways so we decided to have Life Flight hoist him out. You can see the Paramedic on the side of the helicopter in some of the photos. We were at the scene for over six hours.

Water Rescue in Little Cottonwood Canyon

These are photos of a water rescue in Little Cottonwood Canyon. E-113 had command and the paramedics were taking care of the patient. E-116 provided safety lines down stream and a lookout up stream and also assisted with patient care. Heavy Rescue 110 was able to lift the boulder off of the man using airbags. Heavy 121 was a little slow so they got there just in time to help clean up, hey 121 if your going to be late swing by and grab a bakers dozen on the way uh. U.S. Forest service was also in the water along with the Sheriffs office. Good Day. Hot Sammy Garfield is posing after our debriefing, that's why the girls love 'em.

Sorry no pix on this one

A man fell 50 feet while climbing at Moss ledge on Saturday. When we arrived there were four boys and two ladies who helped the patient stay alive it was truly awesome. See, attending scouts has benefits you may never know. I won't get into the whole story because you can see it on the news but this mans life was saved by four scouts. So PARTICIPATE in the scouting program boys.

The day a deer met a cyclist

Yesterday Engine 116 responded to a cyclist who crashed into a deer. The cyclist was traveling down the canyon at approximately 40mph. The man was stable but suffered several injuries. His helmet was crushed which was a big concern for us. We flew the man to University by AirMed and I haven't heard how he is doing. We all had free venison for dinner that night though. ( Just kidding). We did visit with family and friends of the deer and we gave them our condolences.
