Today channel 2 news came by the station and hung out for a while and collected coats for the homeless. The fire dept. does this every year but this was our first time with the news. The little girl with us is in 6th grade and came by to donate $120 she had saved through the summer to by a guitar and saw that we were taking donations and brought the money by. I was very impressed with her so we let her run the horn and siren as we drove around with Casey and Debbie from Ch. 2. We brought in over 400 coats.

A VERY SAD DAY IN THE UFA COMMUNITY. ONE OF OUR NEWEST FIREFIGHTERS 3 MONTH OLD BABY DIED THIS WEEK. TRAGICALLY HE WAS AT THE FIRE STATION WHEN IT HAPPENED AND IS WIFE WAS HOME ALONE. THE LINK WILL GIVE YOU DETAILS AS TO WHAT HAPPENED BUT WE ARE VERY SAD.

My bro. and I went fishing today. I guess you could call it fishing. We hit about 10 carp but shot a lot more than that. I was a blast.

I want to know if anyone from station 116 stays in touch with this blog. If so send me some pictures and we'll throw them on. Send me pictures from any station, we'll make it work.

Yesterday Boshard and Halladay delivered a baby in a ladies bath tub. The baby was fine and the mother did great and we took them to the hospital. It was a good and happy day.

Judkins is a pyro

Here is Halladay on the buffer.

CO Poisining

We had chores to do for the day and it was cleaning the tile floors. We started with a floor buffer and that was working o.k. but not to Walsh's liking, so he brought his power washer in from his truck. Although the ride on the buffer was fun it didn't get nearly as clean as the power washer.

Now here is the funny thing. The Fire Dept responds on CO (carbon monoxide)alarms all of the time so you would think that we know better then to run a gas engine in the station. Walsh started in the bathroom while the rest of the crew ran the buffer in the kitchen and hallway. We thought after ten minutes we should check on Walsh. We went into the bathroom with our CO monitor and couldn't believe he wasn't dead. The CO levels were at 230 parts per million. We make people evacuate their homes at 35. Walsh is a lunger, he has been a firefighter for 34 years so smoke is like fresh air to him. He wanted to keep going so we locked him in the bathroom with his SCBA and he went to town. I must say the floors were spotless. It was one of the funniest thing that have happened for a while at the fire house. We did get a lot of flack from our other stations.

Sorry it's been so long since I have written. My computer has been in the shop for a while. Last week the crew and I were eating breakfast at Virg's when we ran into the Ballou's. It was good to see them. We talked for a while because Ben did a ride along with us so he knows the gang. Ben and CAMILLE bought our breakfast. The crew says thank you, that was so nice.
Earlier this month we went to a home in the Ivory home subdivision on 6200 south on an emergency baby delivery. The mom delivered the baby on the floor before we arrived and she was doing CPR when we walked in. It was very chaotic and disturbing trying to take care of the mother and the baby at the same time. The mother had not delivered the after birth yet so it was a concern to us. We tried everything we could to save the baby, but everywhere we touched him his skin would tare apart because he wasn't fully developed. We along with the neonatal flight nurses pronounced the baby dead at the scene and the mother was taken by our Kearns ambulance to the hospital. Bad day again. Tiffany Anderson knew of the family through her dad. I'm not sure how the family is doing but I pray for them.
I will have a few more posts soon. My dad might do a ride along with me and we will see how that go's.

On the way back to the station from extrication training we were called to this car wreck. We were hoping to have a real extrication but the lady climbed out the other side. Dang it.

This is a slide show of some extrication training we did.

THE RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS

Google HR45 and read what lawmakers are trying to pass. They may as well take away are rights to own guns. I'm not going to get into it on the blog but check it out.

Tackle the Tower

A few guys from the Dept. raised money for a charity and then donated it at Wells Fargo as they climbed from the street to the top floor with their gear on. the gear weighs about 35 lbs. and the building is 26 stories. They did this on one tank of air which is impressive. Good job guys.

I had shut down my blog for a while because I was tired of doing it, but yesterday a firefighter from another station asked me to keep it going. The blog is a way for stations in my Dept. to stay in touch and see what's happening around the valley.
The truck in Tville was called to Walmart because a child was left in a car. When we got there the girl was still in the car and the police officer said he had estimated the girl to have been in the car for about 35 minutes. We unlocked the door using a tool called the "Big Easy". I pulled the 18 month old out of her seat and she just laid on my shoulder. There was a pretty big crowd gathered by this point and they started to cheer when I pulled her out (it was embarrassing). We evaluated her and determined that she was o.k. At that time here comes mom. She sees the lights on all of the cars and trucks and starts sopping saying she was only in the store for a few minutes. When the officer stated he had been waiting for her for 35 minutes, she said the lines were really long. We were really close to letting this lady have it. But instead we all buckled and ended up loading her groceries for her. I was ticked. I hate having to do the right thing.

Our crew just received two new paramedics last week and we have been curious to see how they would mesh in with us and I have to say they are very good paramedics. So you people in Tville can be assured you are getting some great service.

A man in his early 40's was having chest pain and stated that he had pain in the middle of his chest that was radiating into his left arm. He was calm but had a hard time breathing so I was calm knowing that as of right now he just has chest pain. Then he tells me he had a heart attack six months ago and the pain and breathing now are the exact same as they were then. Now I became more concern. I was making eye contact the entire time and in a split second he stopped talking and his eyes looked as if he was looking right through me. I yelled his name and his head slumped over and I knew it was game time. His heart stopped beating and he stopped breathing. We pulled him onto the floor and hooked our EKG monitor and sure enough the dude was dead. Paramedic Boshard gave the guy a pericardia thump (hit the person in the chest as hard as you possibly can with your fist). It didn't change anything. I started to bag the man(breath for the person by using a bag valve mask) and Boshard begin to charged the EKG. Boshard yelled clear and shocked the man. He did a quick jump from the floor and back down. We looked at the EKG and it showed a heart rhythm. Right then the man opened his eyes and asked what had happened. We told him he had just died. We put him in the ambulance and rushed him to the hospital. On the way he died again and we did the same thing as before with the same result. I honestly could not believe we had a guy die twice and we brought him back. It was just like the ER shows. I had never brought someone back like that, usually they come around after they have been at the hospital for a while. I was ecstatic. I saw how great our two paramedics Brandon Boshard and Jefferson Halladay really are and I am excited to work with them.

It was a good day. I have had a run of bad luck with babies for the last few months so to pull this one from the car and have her be alright was a good felling. We also saved two kids dad from dying. All of the failures and other deaths that we have experienced finally started to not feel so heavy.

Friday, January 23, 2009

Again, we had another 1 month old boy die on us today. The mom met us at her front door with the baby lying lip in her arms with grey skin. We knew it wasn't going to be good and we were right the baby never came back. The mother told us she had fed the baby at 4:00 this morning and then layed in bed with the baby. She woke back up at 7:30 and noticed the baby wasn't breathing. We think the mother made a mistake and accidently suffercated her baby.
We went on another dead person that afternoon and pronounced him dead at the house after trying everything. And again that evening we picked a guy up from his house who was having dificulty breathing and he died 1 hour later at the hospital. A very bad day to die in Tville.

But on a more funny note. We had to move a 600lb. fatty off of the toilet. This guy had a gut that hung down to the floor. He had been sitting on the pot for five hours and decided to call for help. We got there and he was on a toilet that basically sits on top of a walker, so he wasn't even on a real toilet. The house stung to high hell from the fungus that was growing in his fat rolls and that didn't seem to help matters. So there he his naked on the pot. As we lift him up in the air he forgets to tell us that he's not done yet, so a number 2 falls out. Seeing a number 2 along with the smell of fungus started to give some of the guys the dry heaves. I just started laughing and thought to myself "the crap we deal with as firemen" and then I started to laugh even harder.
The crew was mad at me because I stuck my head out the window for fresh air and just kept laughing while they were stuck with his smell. Needles to say we got him out. We layed out a tarp across the room, rolled him into it and then drug him like a tranquilized bear down the hall and out on to the porch. We then cut his railing off of the porch so we could roll him into the ambulance. Truly wished you all could have been there.

House Fire In Magna

Today we went to Magna to fight a house fire at 10:00 this morning. By the time we got there the fire had already taken one cat and two dogs. I was assigned to cut down the overhead garage door and a couple of trees in the front yard that were making it difficult for the hose teams to get inside. After that we were assigned as to RIT (Rapid Intervention Team). This means that we are on standby in the event that a firefighter goes down we would be deployed to rescue him. As we were hanging out on the front lawn we noticed that from the radiant heat the garbage can at the end of the driveway caught on fire. All of the hose teams were busy with the house so the garbage can wasn't a priority. Our engineer Blaine saw a bucket full of water on the front porch so he grabbed it a headed over to the can. I went with him like a lost sheep looking for some entertainment. Blaine quickly put out the flames like a true hero. He also had no idea that the bucket was full of fish. I saw the fish in the bucket as he started to pour and I started laughing. He thought I was laughing at him for his unusual fire fighting tactics and he began to bark at me for laughing. I said " no, no Blaine I think you did a great job putting out the fire, I was just wandering if you think the home owner will let us eat his fish now that you just poached them". He looked into the garbage can and then quickly up at me and I started to laugh even harder when he said "well now were batting a thousand for the pets".

This post doesn't really belong on the fire blog so it won't stay long. I had some footage of what goes on at Bunnco while the boys are gone. You know what they say, " when the cat is away the mice will play". All Kelli needs is a fire pole and she's set. Yea baby.

I was in the shower Wed. morning, and to be a funny guy my captain fill a bucket full of flour and waited until I turned off the water. I soon as I shut off the water the captain pulled open the shower door and covered me with flour. When your wet, the flour will stick in your hair and on every piece of skin that is wet. I thought "no big deal I will just get back into the shower." Well that made things worse. The flour turns into a paste that doesn't come off without scrubbing. It took me twenty minutes to get the flour off and I still had spots of paste I that I kept on finding through out the day.
