Aussie Ark is NSW’s largest independently owned and operated conservation organisation. Nestled high above the stunningly beautiful – heritage-listed Barrington Tops of NSW, the landscape provides a sanctuary for many threatened Australian Native mammal species, such as the Tasmanian Devil, Eastern Quoll and Long–Nosed Potoroo. This safe location offers the ideal environment for the eventual reintroduction into the wild for many animals.

To maintain the integrity of ecosystems in the area, Aussie Ark also works on protecting native fauna found within their existing sanctuaries, including 50 species of mammals, 278 species of birds, 42 species of reptiles and 18 types of frogs.

Aussie Ark is committed to practical, outcome-based conservation efforts using proven methods based on science specifically for Australian wildlife. Core activities such as building insurance populations, fire management, fox and feral cat exclusion, weed eradication, rewilding and wildlife translocations are but some of the many tasks taken out to ensure the longevity of all species.

With fantastic projects currently operating, such as a state-of-the-art turtle breeding facility located on the Australian Reptile Park’s site, as well as their goal to plant 100,000 trees through the Mongo Valley and Barrington Sanctuary sites and many other worthwhile causes, they are working hard to safeguard the future of endangered Australian fauna.

We at Erth Points are excited to be able to offer a more direct, collaborative and straightforward way to help Aussie Ark’s supporters help fund their great projects and ensure the longevity of native speices

(Chile, Argentina, October 6, 2023) After seven weeks battling the icy, evil waters of the Southern Ocean, Project Zero expedition leader Geoff Wilson and his crew of three have completed the first leg of a two-year environmental sailing and polar odyssey, which will take them from the South Pole to the North Pole, recording the effects of climate change in real time.

The crew arrived in the port city of Southern Chile, Puerto Montt on October 1, having travelled 6621 nautical miles (12,288 kilometres), since departing Southport, Queensland on August 13.

Their mission is to inspire change through carbon-neutral exploration, documenting the true, untold stories about climate change aboard their specially adapted steel-hulled, carbon-neutral boat, Nanook X, powered by solar, hydro and wind power.

The Project Zero crew ended the first of seven legs in Patagonia, where Geoff summed up the past seven weeks in two words – ‘angry and grey’. He could also add ‘sleepless’ and ‘stressful’ as the four adventurers, who include Geoff’s son, 22-year-old videographer Kitale, landed in Argentina with four days to recover, carry out repairs, reprovision, and refuel before setting off again.

Geoff described the first leg as the “single most exhausting and challenging journey he had ever undertaken”, with unrelenting seas and the “stress of keeping four souls alive” while in a constant state of sleep deprivation.

The crew battled five unforgiving storms, as the Nanook ‘surfed waves’ at 16 knots, at risk of capsizing before deploying a drogue. At times they were being warned to turn back.

“My reply was always: ‘A bad start doesn’t mean a bad end’,” says Geoff.

He said they wanted to inspire a new wave of adventuring, where “leave only footprints, take only photographs and contribute no carbon” becomes real and possible. Their own carbon production will be recorded and shared on the Project Zero website and later offset by planting trees.

As they prepare for the second leg, Geoff admits he never wants to tackle the Southern Ocean again, adding it is an analogy for the ‘mad maelstrom’ humanity will suffer if we ignore climate warnings. “We can change, and we must.”

With 12,000 km of open ocean, more than five terabytes of vision, and five ocean tempests behind them, the four are ready for the next leg.

“Bring on the fjords,” says Geoff. “I’m looking forward to being on solid ground and some time spent solo with my son Kit.”

After leaving the calm shores of New Zealand with a brief pit stop in the Chatham islands for some good Kiwi Pies, the crew continued forth on their adventures into the unknown.
With the calm before the looming storms, the crew worked nonstop, tying down everything on deck, securing items below deck and triple-checking that the Nanook X was ready for what was to be her toughest test to date.

With the barometer dropping, snow and sleet pelting the boat, and winds peaking at 72 knots, they sought refuge below deck. Miraculously, the autopilot managed the extreme conditions, self-correcting as massive waves threatened to push the stern off course.

Amid the relentless storm, a colossal wave flooded the cockpit and engine room, resulting in a 240-volt system failure that severed their pivotal satellite connection. Repairing this link would have to wait until the storm subsided.

With the relentless battering, the crew faced a grave concern: the possibility of losing control of the rudder, resulting in a dangerous sideways slide or, worse yet, a catastrophic bow burial and forward pitch. The team decided to deploy the Jordan Series Drogue, a 200-meter rope system equipped with numerous small parachutes along the line to mitigate these risks. This tactical move aimed to slow down their rapid surfing and provide some protection against their worst fears. The drogue successfully kept them safe throughout another night, securing them to a floating anchor for 15 hours as the storm raged around them. Once the wind consistently dropped below 25 knots, they courageously hauled in the drogue line, hoisted the sails, mended the outage and resumed their journey eastward towards the distant coast of Chile.

It’s incredible what can be achieved in just four days. The crew of The Nanook-X faced a race against time, making significant repairs and modifications to their beloved vessel. Working tirelessly alongside the Nelson Marine Services team, they were determined to prepare their steel-hulled boat for the impending challenge: - to get them safely to Patagonia, it was a case of all hands on deck.

With such a tight window, the team at Nelson Marine Services went above and beyond to get the job done. No job was too big, no problem too daunting, and with the right amount of skills, equipment and Kiwi ingenuity, they were an integral part of the Project Zero mission. Their cheerful faces were at the dock as the Nanook X limped into Nelson to welcome the crew and get stuck into repairing the boat after such a brutal beating across the Tasman.

It was a beating that Geoff and his crew were ultimately grateful for as it highlighted all areas of the boat and equipment that required attention, as well as proving just how tight-knit the crew was, banding together in times of real adversity and showcasing their strengths and abilities to work as a team.

The awesome foursome have since left Nelson and have started the onward journey of traversing the vast 4575 nautical miles of the Southern Pacific Ocean to Patagonia. This immense stretch of ocean will no doubt push the Nanook-X and the crew to their limits through more storms, high seas and winds as they navigate the uncertainty and unpredictability of 30 days in the deep blue, a feat that only a few brave have dared to achieve.

The Sub-Branch also supports the local community via schools and youth groups - who in turn contribute assistance to community groups such as National Seniors, Rotary, Legacy, and Meals on Wheels.

Their registered charity, a non-for-profit foundation, offers learning programmes for schools and corporations to educate, inspire, and influence people through solution-based experiences. The Seabin Foundation provides educational programmes in communities, inviting residents to take responsibility for areas of water affected by pollution.

In collaboration with their pilot partners, the Seabin Project Team collects critical data for to help understand marine litter pollution issues and help them review the impact of Seabins in each area. This information aids in the monitoring of waterway health and enables them to predict forecasted ocean volumes based on weather and tidal patterns.
