Tom Parker - Let All the Earth Sing His Praise (Excellent 1969? US Xian Folk Psych LP on WLSM)

 

Very great Xian Folk Psych LP released in 1969(?) on the little World Library of Sacred Music label (Cincinnati, Ohio).

"The strange cover illustration of peace signs, a priest, a flower child, an elephant, onion domes, a pagoda, a happy sun, etc. would seem to imply a fairly hip album lurking within. And indeed there is - guitarist and songwriter Tom Parker excels in the minor-key Catholic small-folk-band sound. Assisting Tom are Jim Rosch and John Nuttall who handle the vocals. Stripped down basic vibe, sometimes electric along the lines of label-mate Jack Miffleton. Nice tempo mix, the fast Latin feel of 'All You Nations' juxtaposed with brilliant mysterious ballads like 'Charlotte's Song'. (from 'The Archivist' - 4th Edition by Ken Scott)

The Young Rationals - Under Control (Mega rare 1984 US Private New Wave EP)

 

The Young Rationals were Massachusetts' answer to Donnie Iris and the Cruisers.
Nebbishy Steve Stone, who had the Buddy Holly look down pat, was a more charismatic frontman than most and a better songwriter than just about anyone else on the MA club scene, but thanks to Boston's fascination with terrible bands with zero songwriting talent, The Rationals didn't put the town under a wonderful hold.
Their songs had too much melody apparently.
Young Rationals debuted somewhere around 1983 with a delightfully goofy music video, "World's Collide" (sic), and followed it with an EP, "Under Control" (Recon, 1984), on what I think was drummer Tim Jackson's label.
(Jackson was also Robin Lane and the Chartbusters' drummer, and Robin's 1984 EP, "Heart Connection," is the only other record I have on the Recon label.)

With the title track, Stone penned what those shitty Boston "legends" could only dream of writing -- the perfect 3 minute pop song.

The band split up shortly after the EP came out, leaving "World's Collide" unreleased for whatever reason.

Not the stuff I'm usually selling ... but a very interesting record !

Lee Richard / Toby Pollock - Songs of the South / Songs of the Prison (Obscure 1972 US Private Loner Country Folk LP)

Obscure, split LP of loner/outsider country folk from Santa Monica, CA.

Depressing songs include one about a wandering dog who gets killed and then is honored by its trucker friends ("Dog Named Whitey"), an Indian who gets killed seeking revenge for his father's murder ("Bo Lightning"), a tornado that kills 400 in a small town and the following rebuilding project ("Greenwood Tornado") ... out there !!!

Clay Riness - Rollin' in My Changes (Rare and great 1983 US Private Rural Folk LP)

 

I think this is an amazingly great LP.
Often one can get a pretty good idea about a record just by checking out the titles & various details on the cover and/or in the liners; this is a prime example of such examination. How could it not be raw, rustic folk with a label name like Weary Wolf & a publishing company called Folked Up Musics, with songs like "Trapper", "Yodelin' Cowboy", and "Knock Kneed Country Woman" ? How could it not have a slight beat/jazzy/coffeehouse cool to it with a poem like that by Robert "One Man" Johnson on the back ? Right - what you see is what you get, and it's all the better for it.
Only two songs have full accompaniment with drums, bass & femme backing vocals; otherwise Clay sticks to himself & he's doing just as good that way. The guitarplaying is absolutely topnotch, vocals are soulful & deliver the moodiness of "Me And My Old Man" and "Yodelin' Cowboy" with the same ease as the ironic wit of "Movin' To The City Rag".
The songwriting is also of a very high class, balancing the derivation that is part of this game with original ideas that stand up to comparisons with (should-be) classics of the genre, like the Bob Frank LP on Vanguard. Also mandatory for folkblues LPs, at least to my ears, is the need for a few spins to let the songs grab hold of you - it hardly ever happens right away.
Rivaling "Me And My Old Man" for the hotspot is the, also aforementioned, melancholic "Yodelin' Cowboy", full of nostalgia and late-night sadness that may come when looking back upon happier and/or easier times but I wouldn't want to be without any of these ten songs. "Rollin' In My Changes" is a seemingly lost chapter in the record lists, but I'm sure collectors will catch up eventually.
