Becoming French

March 5, 2012

Hello Lovely People!

I’ve got good news and bad news.  Which would you like first?

(Hint: always take the bad news first, since it can ONLY get better after that!)

Bad News: there’s not a lot going on here at Frank Notes (other than raising a 4 year old, running a business, and being married to a French guy!).

Good News: there’s A LOT going on over at French Frank, my new blog about our adventures in moving our family TO FRANCE!  I hope you’ll check it out if you get a chance!

And MORE Good News: Oliver and I are leaving at the butt-crack of dawn on Saturday morning to venture to the Frozen Tundra (otherwise known as Canada) to visit GRAMMA JOANSY!  I’m not sure who’s more excited, Oliver, me, or GRAMMA JOANSY!

There you have it.  Come on over and visit me at French Frank!  Au revoir!

Happy Blogiversary!

January 26, 2012

Five years ago today Frank Notes was born!  Up until today I’ve had 501 posts; 347,088 views; 2,935 views on the busiest day (August 19, 2008 the day I did a sewing tutorial on how to make a carseat cover!), and I’ve had 8,449 comments!  Whew!

Unfortunately it’s been fried, dried, and laid aside due to an active 4 year old and a busy salon.  And I’m alright with that.  AND I’m not going to promise to be better at posting.  It is what it is.

However, there is one bit of exciting news!  You can read all about it here: http://frenchfrank.tumblr.com/

But back to the subject at hand: Happy Blogiversary Frank Notes!

Oliver’s Fourth Year

November 30, 2011

It chokes me up to think that my baby is actually FOUR YEARS OLD!  (or four months old if Oliver is saying it…)  It’s amazing to think of all the things he’s done in the last year: he’s gone the mountains in California to go sledding, he visited Madeline and her family (my best friend Kathy and her husband Rich in Minneapolis), he got to feed a day old baby calf at Gramma’s house in Wisconsin, he traveled to North Carolina to be the ring bearer in Tia Vanesa and Tio John’s wedding, he saw the Grand Canyon with his cousins Delphine and Jean, he learned how to ride a bike, he went on a couple of camping trips to Kern River (one with Daddy and another with Daddy & Papa and Gramma and Grandpa Kenny), and he started a new school that is doing an amazing job at nurturing him and helping him grow.

What an amazing year it’s been.  I’m honored to be called “Daddy”.  He is my baby, my monster, my angel, my dream come true.  Here is the video of highlights from the past year, starting with his last birthday.

It’s a Lot of Responsbility

May 18, 2010

This whole “being adored” thing.  😉

But as Katey pointed out in a recent comment, my adoring public (well, at least one of them), misses me!  (And I guess rightly so, it’s been almost TWO WEEKS!  For shame, for shame!)

When last we spoke, Hubby, Oliver, and I were searching for an apartment.  Seems we’ve had a turn of luck (for the better, finally!) and we found an absolutely INCREDIBLE condo for rent only FOUR BLOCKS from the ocean in Santa Monica!  We’ve since started packing up and are preparing for our move over Memorial Day weekend.  Because there is an overlap, we’ll be able to move the items we want to keep into the condo and leave the things we don’t have room for, then have a big ole Rummage Sale!  And when I say, “Big Ole'” I’m not kidding.  We’re going to have to sell most of our appliances, all of our outdoor furniture, some of our indoor furniture, and lots of miscellaneous like clothes, toys, and my crafting and caking stuff.

I’m a little sad about the move, mostly because of all of the memories we’ve had in our house, including the renovation nightmares, lots of entertaining, becoming parents, surviving cancer, and getting married.  But as Hubby pointed out, “it’s not the house, it’s us.”  Word!

So I’m mostly looking forward to moving on with our lives.

Speaking of moving on with our lives, one of the changes we’ve had to make is finding a new “school” for Oliver.  As our newly found good luck would have it, we were accepted into one of THE BEST early childhood development centers in the country (says me!)!  This is a great thing for Oliver as we believe he needs the stimulation and challenge.  Although he’s very well loved at his current daycare, we don’t think he’s getting enough stimulation.  So this will be a great thing for him.  And for us because we’ll get to be involved in his new “school”.

Finally, I’ve found a salon that I would like to purchase, also in Santa Monica.  Right now we’re talking with the current owners.  Because we don’t have agents, it’s a bit, um, delicate.  And for anyone who’s read me long enough, “delicate” isn’t one of the first words that describes me!  So whereas I could tell my agent, “Tell them their dump isn’t worth $XX, and make them an offer of $x” I’m finding I have to be much more, um, well, delicate.  It’s a learning process in so many regards.  But now that I have their email address, I’ve composed an offer in writing that expresses my concerns and makes an offer.  It’s much easier than saying it to their faces!

So never fear, Dear Readers, we are all doing well.  Just caught up in the challenges of Daily Life.  But I’ll do my best to keep you all updated about our progress as we go!

Thanks! I Have A Name!

March 18, 2010

Thanks for all your suggestions!  It was so much fun watching what you all suggested.

There are two winners!

First, Thanks to Shelly for being the randomly-chosen winner of the naming contest!  I have some products on the way and as soon as I get them, I’ll send you your prize!

Secondly, Thanks to Anna Liza for the AWESOME name of Salon Vert!  It was love at first sight!  As evidenced here, I just went with it.  I really like the name, the slogan, and the interpretation.  I’m going to send you some product as well (when it gets here!).

(If you do go to the website, be gentle, it’s definitely a work-in-progress!)

Happy (Belated) New Year!

January 2, 2010

It’s cold, cold, cold here in Central Wisconsin. Like fourteen BELOW zero not including the wind chill (25 below with it!)!

So we’re staying indoors today. But here are some highlights from the last few days.

There’s been lots of knitting to try to finish Hubby’s sweater (it’s further done now than in this photo, but this is the most recent photo I have).

 Sweater for Hubby

There’s been some playing with (and lining-up and picture-taking of) cousins (well, third-cousins really).

Playing With Preslie

 Cousins

There’s been some cheesy mall photobooth/drawings. (Yes I’m aware that I look possessed and Oliver looks like he’s hearing voices.  Thanks!)

Mall Photo

There’s been some bundling-up to go outside.

Bundled Up With Daddy

There’s been lots of snow-eating, and calf-watching, and Harley-kisses.

 More Kisses From Harley

There’s also been some trying to hide what’s hanging in the tree in the front yard.

 Deer Ornament

And ultimately there was the realization of what that was hanging in the tree.

A ‘ding’ (bell)!

We hope you all rang in the New Year with as much fun as we’ve been having!

Didn’t Mean

July 6, 2009

To leave y’all hanging but it’s been a hectice few days, spent mostly preparing for our trip to France (we leave tomorrow at 8:15 am). And if there are any would-be burglars reading my blog, we’ve got a house sitter, a security system, and some very protective neighbors!

Never fear! Despite being gone for a good while, I plan to blog and send photos to my Flickr as frequently as I can (I even put a data plan on my phone so I have internet in France! Bit please don’t text cuz it’s 50 cents per text! Yikes!).

I’m a bit anxious about the flight as we have a 2 hour layover in Boston. Additionally the flight is full from LAX to Boston so no seat for Oliver. From Boston to Paris it looks like there’s a good chance we’ll have an extra seat, so cross your fingers for Daddy’s and Papa’s sanity!

A bientot!

At The Stoplight

June 27, 2009

Yesterday as Oliver and I were sitting at a stoplight, on our way to Makende’s end-of-the-year school program, I noticed a car next to us with all it’s windows open (mostly because my windows were open and my innards were jiggling from the bass coming from that car!).

I looked over and there were four women in the car, looking over at Oliver (in the backseat in his carseat) and I.

As I made eye contact, one of them said, “Your son is so cute!” and they all oohed and ahhed (rightly so, I might add!).

I leaned out the window and said, “He takes after his Papa,” to which someone replied, “I know that’s right; you’re fine!”

I leaned out the window again and said, “Oh I’m not his papa, I’m his Daddy” and pulled away as the light turned green, leaving them all a bit confused-looking.

First Step

April 24, 2009

I can’t post a full entry because I’m nursing (in the sense I’m taking care of, not giving a boob to!) my son whose canines decided to come in full force.

Anyway, I toon the first step towards Plan C today: I have my reseller’s permit which means I can by wholesale! Woot!

More in Plan C later this weekend.

In Love (again!)

June 1, 2007

Since I’ve been a blog reader (for what, 3 or 4 months, prior to that I didn’t even really know what a blog was!) I’ve heard about Etsy but didn’t really know what it was and for whatever reason never clicked through when a link was provided. I did today.

OH.MY.GAWD! I’m in love with Etsy! It’s like a better version of the unnamed auction site for hand-crafted items. LOVE IT! There’s cute baby stuff and beautiful jewelry and jewelry for men and homemade cookies!

So what I’m thinking is that I can sell my cookies:

Or it will be an excuse to make stuff that looks fun but that I don’t make because I think, “Who would I ever give that to?”

And even if I never sell anything on Etsy, it’s just so much fun to look at all the creativity! I love you Etsy!

Oh, I started the Adoption Application Packet.  It’s scary.
