 This illustration shows a variety of the wildlife that are dwelling in safety at Newhaven, a former cattle station turned wildlife sanctuary. 

The traditional owners  the Ngalia Warlpiri and Luritja people own a part of the desert which the sanctuary is located on, they are working alongside the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) in a close partnership to protect this land and the precious species protected here.

The sanctuary covers a vast 226,501 hectares.

This is the first sanctuary of its kind in Australia, and I for one hope that there is going to be many more sanctuaries like this to protect the unique wildlife of Australia, especially from the continued destruction of habitat by the humans, and by feral cats which cause a lot of damage to the native wildlife  numbers throughout of Australia. (Which is why I never allow my cat's to roam free.) 

Already there are 27 mammal species, 83 reptile and 180 birds, 600 plant species as well as 23 ecosystems. 

You can visit the sanctuary and camp for $10 per person per night, cash only as it's in the middle of absolutely nowhere.

You would need a four-wheel drive to get here and to explore the tracks within the sanctuary. 

There is no power on site, but there are shower and toilet facilities. 

 Alice Springs is about 400 kilometres away and the landscape varies from salt lakes, rocky desert eucalyptus and mulga woodlands and spinifex plains. There are sections that are completely off limits to visitors, but with over 300 kilometers of tracks to follow I think visitors would never run out things to see...

The Intimate Moments...

The intimate moments I am privileged to witness in my garden are always humbling.  These moments usually highlight how vulnerable birds are. They are continually alert, keeping an eye out for danger, even when taking a bath.

Viewing the front garden from inside the cottage means that I can observe without intruding. 

I hadn't realised that the bronzewings used the top tier of the pond for bathing. 

There are two pairs of bronzewings who favour dwelling in the front garden, it's smaller and very shady. And it was one of the pairs who I watched taking turns to soak in the cooling water on a very hot afternoon...

 

More Wonderful..

More wonderful art from Paola Pivi in AGWA which truly highlights how versatile an artist she is. Although I loved the polar bears the best, I also was captivated by all the other pieces Paola has on display in the gallery.

 I do prefer contemporary art to the more traditional art, as it is usually more fun and expressive to my eye. 

On the rooftop gallery there is a fabulous installation of 999 trays of colourful liquid suspended from the ceiling, which was perhaps better in person, although I did try to capture the effect with many photos. Next to the polar bears this was my second favourite of her works.
