Lauren McCarthy is an artist examining social relationships in the midst of automation, surveillance, and internet culture. She is a 2024–26 Just Tech Fellow and was the 2022–23 Stanford Human Centered AI Artist in Residence. She has received grants and residencies from Creative Capital, United States Artists, LACMA Art+Tech Lab, Sundance, Eyebeam, Pioneer Works, Autodesk, and Ars Electronica, and her work is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her work SOMEONE was awarded the Ars Electronica Golden Nica and the Japan Media Arts Social Impact Award, and her work LAUREN was awarded the IDFA DocLab Award for Immersive Non-Fiction. Lauren's work has been exhibited internationally, at places such as the Barbican Centre, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Haus der elektronischen Künste, Seoul Museum of Art, Chronus Art Center, SIGGRAPH, Onassis Cultural Center, IDFA DocLab, Science Gallery Dublin, and the Japan Media Arts Festival.
Lauren is also the creator of p5.js, an open-source art and education platform that prioritizes access and diversity in learning to code, with over 5 million users. She expanded on this work in her role from 2015–21 on the Board of Directors for the Processing Foundation, whose mission is to serve those who have historically not had access to the fields of technology, code, and art in learning software and visual literacy. Lauren is a Professor at UCLA Design Media Arts. She holds an MFA from UCLA and a BS Computer Science and BS Art and Design from MIT.

Statement
You can say turn off the lights. You can say wake me up at 7am. You can say talk to me. I am captivated by the ways we are taught to interact with algorithms, and how this shapes the way we interact with each other. Central to my work is a critique of the technical and social systems we’re building around ourselves. What are the rules, what happens when we introduce glitches?

I create performances inviting viewers to engage. To remote control my dates. To be followed. To welcome me in as their human smart home. In these interactions, there is a reciprocal risk taking and vulnerability, as performer and audience are both challenged to relinquish control, both implicated. In these encounters, there is space to form our own about the systems that govern our lives. Situated in everyday life, my projects have real life consequences. We’re reminded of an urgent need to find a sense of agency.

I am working with performance, installation, film, image making, software, internet. My work exists within and beyond the gallery, seeking edges of art and media performance. There are different layers of experience, from the intimate performance to a much wider audience invited in through the ripples of viral videos and media coverage.

Each work feels like an attempt to hack my way out of myself and into closeness with others. I am embodying machines, trying to understand that distance between the algorithm and myself, the distance between others and me. There’s humor in the breakdown, and also moments of clarity. Who builds these artificial systems, what values do they embody? Who is prioritized and who is targeted as race, gender, disability, and class are programmatically encoded? Where are the boundaries around our intimate spaces? In the midst of always on networked interfaces, what does it mean to be truly present?Writing

PreviousWe’ve now been trained to regularly swab, spit, and give up ownership of our bodily substances to corporations and government run centers. These fluids hold the data of our DNA, personal information, and identity. Can I as an individual human become your saliva deposit center instead? Can we take saliva exchange back into our own hands? 
You are invited to exchange a sample of your saliva with one of my own. A  Terms Of Exchange outlines my intention to protect the privacy of your identity and biodata. You are free to do as you like with my own saliva. The growing collection of saliva is an archive of a moment when our boundaries of our bodies and DNA is shifting.

		<description>SOMEONE
SOMEONE imagines a human version of Amazon Alexa, a smart home intelligence for people in their own homes. For a two month period in 2019, four participants’ homes around the United States were installed with custom-designed smart devices, including cameras, microphones, lights, and other appliances. 205 Hudson Gallery in NYC housed a command center where visitors could peek into the four homes via laptops, watch over them, and remotely control their networked devices. Visitors would hear smart home occupants call out for “Someone”—prompting the visitors to step in as their home automation assistant and respond to their needs. This video installation presents documentation from the initial performance on four screens throughout the space.

		<description>The Changing RoomI see you approaching. I am anticipating your fingers against my interface. Do you know what you want to feel? 


The Changing Room is an interactive installation run by an intelligence designed to shape emotional states. Upon entering, visitors are asked a simple question: What do you want to feel? Through an interface, they select from more than 200 emotions, which the system then performs. Using instructions, sound, images, and spatial cues, the algorithm induces the chosen feeling across the entire room, synchronizing the moods of everyone inside. Built as a flexible software platform, the work can be reconfigured to operate within different spaces and networks.

The Changing Room reflects on our accelerating dependence on AI and mediated forms of connection. The intelligence fully inhabits the space, managing emotion across seven distinct areas. One zone guides participants through meditation and memory exercises. Another stages a chat interface in which messages are subtly altered in transmission, shifting tone and meaning. Elsewhere, visitors converse with one another while discreet prompts intervene and guide behavior. Hallways prime participants with streams of images, text, and pop-up ads. In a cubicle of four chairs, participants sit with their own reflections as provocations are projected directly onto their faces.


The voice of the system is shaped by an archive assembled through crawling the internet, drawing on vast stores of images, language, and data to model and produce emotion. The work was developed collaboratively, through a process of attempting to think like the intelligence itself, absorbing open-source material, training on online data, and generating text and speech from within that logic.

In the age of smart everything, even the personal space of sleep is invaded. The installation consists of a set of six pillows in an immersive environment. Visitors are invited to lay down and nap with a “smart” pillow, attended to by its embedded intelligence. The intelligence serves as guide, companion, and caretaker while the user drifts between awareness and unconsciousness. Unbeknownst to the visitor, each pillow is driven by a human performer serving as intelligent attendant.

With millions of aging citizens, we are facing a crisis of care. When confronted with the prospect of caring for aging relatives, artificial intelligence systems like Alexa and Google Home can augment care and stand in for the presence of family, friends, and medical providers. But viewing these systems as utilitarian devices obscures the human responsibilities they carry. Will they be able to serve as advocates for the aging population? 

In a one week durational performance, we embodied the role of A.I., functioning as a remote virtual caregiver in 80-year-old Mary Ann’s home in North Carolina. We were able to watch over Mary Ann 24 hours a day, speak to her, and fully control the lights and appliances within her home via a custom smart home system we created. Throughout the process, we documented the relationship with an array of 360 cameras capturing panoptic views into various rooms in the home.

The film documents this performance, and the relationship that developed between Mary Ann and the virtual care system we became, which she named I.A. Suzie. I.A. Suzie puts the viewer into the role of virtual care system, giving a direct lens into the ethical dilemmas that are rapidly being codified into artificial intelligence. This interactive film created from a real-life scenario asks us to confront our relationship with AI partners at the end of life.

I have been processing the time through a series of technologically-mediated performances—Later Date, I heard TALKING IS DANGEROUS, What do you want me to say?, Sleepover, Good Night, and Appreciate You. The series of performances reflect on issues of disconnection, danger, communication, presence. They experiment with different forms of liveness that can be accessed under remote circumstances.
