- Untitled January 31, 2026 2:46 amOh for fucks sake. I just read what stuff is in those new Epstein files. Those fuckers are absolutely vile, and so is anyone shielding them.
- Untitled January 30, 2026 12:27 pmHe should have pretended to be ICE and they would have let him most likely.https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/29/nyregion/luigi-mangione-break-out-blade.html?unlocked_article_code=1.IFA.XJN0.1iZAcd8oO9Jn&smid=nytcore-android-share#mangione #news
- Untitled January 29, 2026 10:24 pmSo, I haven't really been using Amazon lately, but for Christmas I found one book for my wife only on there. And while I was at it I added two #frostgrave supplements that seemed cheap. Today i got the notice that one of the books I ordered at the end of November was supposed to finally arrive. A quick check showed me the second one was... scheduled for the 18th of June. Now I don't know if that's an #Amazon issue or a brexit issue, but that seems... somewhat extreme.
- Untitled January 29, 2026 10:02 pmOh, and uruks that sing at you and hit you with their lute axes. And creepily flirty uruks that really want to get their hands on your body. And an Aussie troll.And...I mean, it's just so over the top it doesn't even register as a Tolkien adaption anymore.
- Untitled January 29, 2026 9:58 pmAnd of course there is also the fact that while there are some designs that are akin to the movie designs, most look quite a lot better than that. (I really find the #LOTR movie designs distractingly inappropriate for the setting)But that also means they took the movie license to basically write their own fanfic set in an alternate continuity. And they made Shelob sexy (and fundamentally one of the good guys). Also there was an elvish ninja.
- Untitled January 29, 2026 9:53 pmThis occurred to me especially as I was just fighting an Uruk captain in Cirith Ungol, first freezing him and then setting him aflame.Huh, I thought... frost and fire...https://youtu.be/6rpVmUKFIwg#music
- Untitled January 29, 2026 9:51 pmI was just thinking about why I like the Middle Earth: Shadows games when I don't even like the movies (of which they are using the license), but as I played a bit today I think it crystallized itself out to me: both games are about as connected to Middle-earth as your average heavy metal album. Sure, there's gonna be overt references there for the Tolkien fans, but it's all window dressing for the actual content.#videogames #tolkien
- Untitled January 29, 2026 4:00 pmhe did actually play for five minutes because he set a timer for 1pm (the time his school would have ended) and decided that meant he was allowed to play. that was until I came back from the bathroom, checked his exercise book, and noticed there had been 0 progress since 9am
- Untitled January 29, 2026 3:57 pmin between his best friend has been calling at least 20 times, including on my phone, to check if he finally can play.
- Untitled January 29, 2026 3:54 pmSo he's been "sitting" at this since 8.30am. And I feel like I am in need for a stupid long walk for my stupid mental health.
- Untitled January 29, 2026 3:52 pmso if you're wondering why I've been quiet today......I know nobody is actually wondering, just let me entertain the hypothetical...my kid was home today because of a light fever. the deal was that he was allowed to watch TV and play video games once he finished his long overdue homework. Which amounts to a bit less than a page of writing.I give you 3 guesses of how many pages he finished and if you guess anything larger than 0.8 you are wrong.
- Untitled January 29, 2026 9:00 amAnd having read and watched a metric ton of novels, comics, and movies in that genre, I have the feeling that I both would like to include the idea of xia (often translated as "martial heroes") into my game, but I also don't want to overwhelm the game with additional mechanics. One of my problems is that the inspiration of the monk class, the shaolin sect, always feels like one of the least interesting parts of the common wuxia setting.12/?
- Untitled January 29, 2026 8:51 amThe core problem with the class is of course that it tries to put an idea from a different genre into a setting that it does not originally belong to.I say problem, but that's also one of the things that make it interesting. At its heart the monk class tries to be a representation of a whole genre of Chinese literature (wuxia), through the lens of the few westernized interpretations available to the authors of DnD in the 1970s.11/?
- Untitled January 28, 2026 4:38 pmRight now I keep thinking about calling the class "Ascetic" in my house rules, but I have the feeling that also doesn't capture all it should be. By now I read a ton of wuxia fantasy though and I feel that might come the closest. That is besides the phrase "martial artist", which in my opinion also should encompass fighters and clerics.
- Untitled January 28, 2026 4:35 pmBECMI DnD actually DID rename it to "Mystic" but that didn't really stick, and also didn't really manage to get the essence of the class. (The name I think fits better to something like a psion)9/?
- Untitled January 28, 2026 4:29 pmAnd ok, here's my problem: why call the class Monk?Other classes got renamed over time. The Fighting-Man became a Fighter. The magic user was split into multiple different classes. The monk... disappeared from core in ADnD 2nd edition, but came back in 3rd. And all the time writers bent themselves in pretzels how it's a monastic class that's technically a cleric, but actually more of a fighter, with occasionally some psionics.7/?
- Untitled January 28, 2026 4:22 pmThis mashup of styles wasn't even all that unusual for the time: Blackmoor also contained the first published dnd scenario "Temple of the Frog" where chaotic monks of an apocalyptic frog cult guarded a swamp temple, ruled over what was essentially a stranded Starfleet officer in battle armour with energy weapons, masquerading as a high priest.6/?
- Untitled January 28, 2026 4:07 pmAnd one of them was the monk. Why specifically a monk?Well, some people might not remember the 1972 hit series Kung Fu starring David Carradine, about a shaolin monk in the wild west. But that was basically it. That's the reason why it's called a monk, and that's the reason why it's so clearly of a different culture: because the whole inspiration was a shaolin monk travelling in America.5/?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kung_Fu_(1972_TV_series)
- Untitled January 28, 2026 4:01 pmOk, we know why that all is. The monk was one of the first additional characters that appeared for DND, in D&D supplement II: Blackmoor, right after the thief (in Supplement 1: Greyhawk, yes the thief wasn't one of the original classes) and together with the assassin.Blackmoor was the name of Dave Arneson's home game, the famous first fantasy campaign, and the book contained basically nothing about the setting, just some additional rules Arneson had come up with for his game.4/?
- Untitled January 28, 2026 3:55 pmAlso: why is the class called monk and female members of it are also monks and not nuns?3/?
