Knitting a Shawl

March 2, 2025

I had some fabulous luck at a thrift shop a while back. I spotted thirteen skeins of the same yarn and same dye lot. They had all been packaged by the store into one big bag and the price was very thrifty!!! They are little skeins, 1.34 ounces each, but I am determined to use them for a shawl because one of the fiber contents is mohair and that should be very warm and I am a fan of shawls

I didn’t start this project until quite recently because I was finishing a different project first. The gauge of the yarn is quite fine so I am knitting with two skeins of yarn together to make the shawl thicker and warmer.

Gnomes are Home!

January 4, 2025

The gnomes are back home with me. They were not ever lost. What happened to them was just a well thought-out process for making them easier for me to pick up, while being concerned that they were not going to be stolen. I can’t find any kind of beef with that kindness and concern.

Whew! E…x…h…a…l…e!

“Marco…..” may just find “Polo” very soon.

January 2, 2025

There may just be a positive outcome of the gnome adventure very soon. It turns out that the shipping center was not adjacent to the library where the gnomes had just recently been exhibited. That was misinformation on the librarian’s part….but innocent. The shipping center for the libraries in this neck of the woods is at a location closer to the library where the traveling exhibit began AND with a librarian that I know by name who is still working there.

So I paid the library a visit and the librarian I know by name was on duty. He will watch for the gnomes from the shipping center and then contact me so I can go pick them up.

It’s not over… but getting there. Whew!

Gnomes….

January 2, 2025

No, my gnomes have not returned to me yet, but….. I got on the phone to the library in question and THANKFULLY there was a different person who answered the library call center phone. I asked to be transferred to the library director and that happened!

The mailing distribution center is an off-site facility that manages the library shipping for thirteen libraries plus a bookmobile! Well…no wonder it’s taking a while! That has to be a lot of shipping to take care of!

The director I spoke with took my contact info and was going to make a call as soon as she was done speaking with me. I got the impression that the director might call me back, but if not, at least I have more info. The director also told me the plan was to also call the vacationing librarian, I said that would not be necessary, given the shipping circumstances for so many libraries.

So… I guess I am writing this post with a tad more patienceand/or hope.

“Marco……” “Marco……”

December 29, 2024

Sorry, not sorry…. the title of my post is the first thing that came to mind when I got the news. I hope you are familiar with that game. I played it most often in a public swimming pool. I will let you look it up if you haven’t heard of it.

I will cut to the chase. My gnomes have gone missing. As of this moment as I type this post, there has been no sign of them. The librarian responsible for them is on a month-long vacation. The library where the gnomes were on loan does not do tracking for their packages so… Sent ? Not sent? Headed to Alaska? Unraveled and yarn used for a different project! Who knows at this point? The latest word from the library is that they don’t know where the gnomes are… and neither do I.

Hmmm…. to be continued??? Do gnomes know how to text? Or is this how it ends? “Marco…..” 😦

Snow Storm, December 2024

December 19, 2024

Can’t call it a blizzard because the wind speed is too low. There are a lot of crashes, spinouts. By 8:30 this morning, the State Troopers had already responded to over 130 crashes, 91 vehicle damage crashes, 28 vehicles off the road, 9 crashes with injuries, 5 jackknifed semis, 28 vehicles off the road. and the MPS airport had a hold on incoming flight that was just recently lifted, but…. major delays.

YARN

December 10, 2024

Is it bad to wish that this yarn was all mine?

I’d be knitting it up, making items so fine.

Some items to wear and some to just nuzzle,

But alas, all the yarn was my daily puzzle.

Thrifty Wool Yarn Find

November 16, 2024

I happened by a thrift store while running errands yesterday. I stopped to take a walk n’ peek. I’m glad I did! I found 27 skeins of yarn in the exact same dye lot. Before you say “WOW”, please note that each skein of wool had only 40 yards. The skeins were needlepoint tapestry yarn and the color is called “CRANBERRY”. Well, with Thanksgiving on its way, what’s not to love about that?! Made me smile.

When I got home, I just got to work wining those little hanks into little ball. Then today, I started knitting a warm winter hat for myself. Because of the yarn gauge, I doubled the strands to make a very warm hat for our Minnesota winters.

I am nearly done knitting the hat…thanks to college football games on TV and a chilly wind in the air!

My hat will be finished today and ready for the cold weather! And due to my 27 skeins of yarn find, there will be plenty yarn left to make some cranberry mittens to follow. I love to knit mittens!

Below is an image of skeins and the yarn color.

Gnomes

November 6, 2024

My knitted gnomes are still on their library tour. They are currently on display at the George Latimer Central Library. They will be there through all of November. The library has the gnomes in a nice showcase… well lit and in a nice location. Each library has had their own fun and clever ways to set up the display.

One thing that was very touching to me was the sign in the showcase with the gnomes. It says the “gnomes are on loan from the artist.” It never occurred to me to think of them that way. I’m a knitter and the phrase has always been “two sticks and string.” I didn’t think up that phrase. It has been around a long time. But… I may work on changing my paradigm. I found the sign to be very thoughtful/respectful actually.

I recently got a request from Texas… so I will have to figure out when that can happen. I have a couple places closer to home already lined up. But they already know that. Texas just wanted to get in line. And so…they are!

It Matters.
