Theological Study in the Heart of Berkeley

Our Berkeley campus places students inside one of the world’s most influential intellectual and cultural centers. Close ties to UC Berkeley expand research and teaching opportunities, while the Bay Area offers daily engagement with diverse religious communities, social movements, and cultural institutions. At the GTU, theological study extends well beyond the classroom.

Faculty Forefront

Faculty at the Forefront of Religious Scholarship

GTU faculty are internationally recognized scholars who are published by leading academic presses. While their work is rooted deeply in a religious tradition, they also engage with the most urgent questions of our time, including ecological sustainability, technology and ethics, personal identity, the material conditions of spiritual experience, and the politics of reconciliation and coexistence. Reaching beyond the classroom, their scholarship also speaks to public discourse, policy, and social transformation. At the GTU, students collaborate with faculty mentors to connect rigorous analysis and lived religious experience to contribute to effective social action.

“The GTU helped deepen my affinity for rabbinic history and historical criticism. I discovered that historical criticism is an important truth-telling technology of our generation.”

“Besides its stellar reputation, the GTU is one of the few institutions that encourages scholar practitioner students, as it recognizes the passion and potential for success that a practitioner can bring to the table.”
