Scaffolding Math Talk: Math Talk Toolkit
Math talk is so important. It is the glue that holds the whole endeavor together. Students need to be able to communicate their thinking as well as listen and respond to the thinking of others. We often do this by putting up talk stems. However, this can be very overwhelming and confusing when there are a bunch of them up all over the place. I propose that we organize talk stems in ways that make them accessible to our students.
Here is a math talk toolkit to get you started. Notice that there are posters that go on the wall as well as individual posters for students to keep in their thinking notebooks for easy accessibility. There are also math talk cards that students can put on a ring, but they organized again by categories so students can more easily use them.
