HandBrake is a tool for converting video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codecs.

- VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (unencrypted -- CSS is not supported internally and must be handled externally with third-party software and libraries), BDMV folder (unencrypted), and some .VOB and .TS files
- Any multimedia file it can get libavformat to read and libavcodec to decode.

- File format: MP4 and MKV
- Video: MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 or Theora (1 or 2 passes or constant quantizer/rate encoding)

All Handbrake does is WORK PERFECTLY! It is a truly rare thing these days, and I will be eternally appreciative Handbrake does what it claims it will do: open .mp4 files. I would lost without this App, and should look for a way to give back to a company competent enough to perform this amazing task. Keep up your good work MacUpdate, and I will try to do my small part to support your efforts!

Seven years later, Handbrake is still my conversion workhorse. Only on some old device I have issues using its converted videos (sound drops) where iFFmpeg (now ffWorks) gives no issue for the same source file and comparable settings.

I had an old version on Handbrake on an old mac that worked great, just took a long time. It was great to travel with a selection of movies. Now this version is fast but its alternates between clear and pixelated throughout the whole movie rip. How do I get the old version or is there something I should be doing different to rip?

Love this app -- it's the tits !!! It's the only app that converts video without producing a pixel-ridden result or black blocks that seem to take up a lot of screen room. It's straight-forward and simple to use. Oh, and let's not forget it's free !!!
