TypeStatus Plus Released

Now that I have your attention (April Fools, sorry), here’s a status update. TypeStatus Plus and TypeStatus 2 - the successor to the current free TypeStatus - are in active development. I got really, really, busy after the extremely premature announcement of TypeStatus Plus back in July last year, and very little is currently implemented. TypeStatus 2 has been re-thought and much of the development restarted about twice in order to do things in a way that’s more closely integrated with the status bar frameworks. I’ll be posting updates occasionally, and betas of TypeStatus 2 will appear on the HASHBANG Productions repo (cydia.hbang.ws, of course). TypeStatus Plus betas will only be available to a small selected number of friends (sorry), but after release all purchasers can download them from our repo.

FlagPaint 2.4 will also be submitted as soon as I remember to finish up on it. It most likely won’t yet have all features working on iOS 8 - although the majority of the tweak does work - since I just don’t have sufficient time to work on everything. The release is more because it’s been impossible for new users on iOS 8 to purchase it for too long - sorry.

Chariz has been coming along really well and pretty quickly. Huge thanks in particular to Timon and Alex for their devotion.

Finally, as more of a little side project, Opener is gaining some cool new features, like being able to choose which app will be launched when you tap a link - similar to when you open a file from Safari or Mail, or when opening a link on Android. You’ll really enjoy it, and that means the missing settings you’ve always wanted to toggle features of LinkOpener (and soon, YTOpener) and the apps they open if you have multiple will be there. It also improves how link overrides are implemented, so they will always open reliably.

Thanks for your patience, and I swear nothing except the headline is a joke. (I think.)

Belated TypeStatus for Mac update

It’s a bit later than I wanted it to be, but I’ve just released TypeStatus for Mac version 1.0. The changelog:

Adds full support for OS X Yosemite, including support for the different states of the Yosemite menu bar (light and dark themes, and inactive if you use multiple monitors).
Fixes names sometimes being cut off (especially on Yosemite).
Fixes the icon not displaying as Retina on Retina Displays.
Many many code improvements around the place.

There is an issue that pops up occasionally on Yosemite where an app has quit but the menu bar leaves a gap where its icon used to be - when TypeStatus displays itself in the menu bar, OS X might put it in this gap, which is obviously not big enough to hold the whole TypeStatus item. Unfortunately there’s not much we can do about this and thus it’s something Apple needs to fix.

Finally: if TypeStatus isn’t working for you, you might have to tick “Use SIMBL” in the EasySIMBL app. After OS X updates, EasySIMBL disables itself as a convenience in case a tweak is broken on the new update, but it doesn’t let you know about this. Keep this in mind when you next update OS X.

New again

Well after a mishap in what I thought would be a quick and painless WordPress upgrade, I’ve ended up rewriting this site to use the pretty cool Wintersmith, which the Cydia repo has been using for some time. Given this site is now made of completely static files generated by my computer at home and not the server, that won’t happen again.

In more interesting news, iOS 8 and 8.1 have been quickly jailbroken by the Pangu team again, and as such we are working to update our tweaks to support iOS 8. Right now, most tweaks work, with the notable exception of settings which sometimes require a respring to take effect.

If you’re looking for a Mobile Terminal replacement (since it no longer works on iOS 8), it seems everyone is using NewTerm from our repo (again, that’s cydia.hbang.ws). While it sorta does the job, it’s far from complete and nowhere near the standard I’d like to have even for a beta. Stay tuned with this blog because I’ll be posting about NewTerm’s future soon.

End of season

It’s that time of year again when a new major iOS has just come out and the jailbreak community starts to significantly decrease in size. Thus, I’ll be releasing a final update before I stop working on tweaks until the iOS 8 jailbreak release - FlagPaint7 1.3. Here’s the changelog of the update I just submitted to BigBoss:

Fixes issues with album art icons when TinyBar is installed.
Fixes a crash when Priority Hub is installed.
Fixes display issues in the notification center.
Should fix an issue with emergency alerts causing a SpringBoard crash.
Adds a setting to disable dimming secondary notifications.
Hides the lock screen and notification center fading at the bottom while scrolling.
Hides the fading at the top of the lock screen when SubtleLock’s blurred background is enabled.
Improves memory management when the device is low on memory.

Thanks, of course, to everyone who purchased FlagPaint7 - we can’t wait to give you more features after the jailbreak!

That tweak everyone’s been waiting for (a bit too long, oops), TypeStatus Plus, will be released following the iOS 8 jailbreak, along with the companion update to the free version of TypeStatus (2.0). There will be betas available of TypeStatus 2.0 before both are fully released.</p>

I was originally going to postpone this until the iOS 8 jailbreak, but thanks to the recent iOS 7.1 jailbreak release, today I’m announcing that “something awesome” I mentioned.

But first: Bugs

Unfortunately it’s a bit late to change the announcement, but I realised (and the community certainly agrees) that maybe the big thing should have been bug fixes - lots and lots of bug fixes. iOS 7.1 tweak updates haven’t happened yet since the past few weeks were fairly stressful for me, but the school term just ended a few days ago here and so those will be coming as soon as possible. And now, without further ado…

I’ve been listening to every suggestion we’ve gotten, and this is the result.

More than just iMessage.

There’s tons more messaging services out there than iMessage, and many also have similar typing indicator and read receipt features. TypeStatus Plus includes support for WhatsApp, Facebook, Skype, Kik, and Snapchat. If you’re a developer, there’s also a plugin API you can use to make TypeStatus Plus support your favorite messaging service.

Never miss a typing notification.

With full Notification Center integration, TypeStatus Plus ensures you never miss a typing or read receipt notification. That, of course, also includes more prominent notifications on the lock screen that make quickly jumping back into the conversation as easy as a swipe.

You can also opt to enable alert tones.

Customizable status bar notifications.

Want to show the overlay, and then have the typing icon to remain in the status bar until you respond to the sender? Want to tap the overlay to quickly jump to the conversation and be ready to respond? TypeStatus Plus will easily let you do all this.

Oh, and did someone say Pebble integration?

You betcha.

Features coming to the free version

By the way: TypeStatus 1.3 will have big improvements over TypeStatus 1.2. I’m working to rewrite large portions of the code behind the status bar overlay to be much more stable and future-proof so iOS updates are less likely to break it. iPad users will especially notice that TypeStatus will only push away the clock instead of the entire status bar. This will happen on iPhone too, if the TypeStatus overlay isn’t too wide.

Beta

We have the first beta being sent out to our beta testing group fairly soon (sorry; we’re not adding any more testers at this time), and unlike TypeStatus 1.2, we’re hoping we can get TypeStatus Plus out very soon for you to enjoy - bug free. After the first release, purchasers will be able to participate in beta testing via our Cydia repo.

This month in HASHBANG history

The first five months this year were definitely nowhere near as good as they should have been for HASHBANG, in terms of getting well-tested tweak updates out quick. We’re working hard as of this month to improve that, and we’ve kicked that off with a major FlagPaint7 update only a week after the previous.

The following updates are to be completed and released, hopefully in this order, over the next month or so. And I mean it!

FlagPaint7 1.2

Version 1.2 has been submitted to BigBoss, and at the time of writing is awaiting their approval before it becomes available. Here’s the changelog:

Adds opacity sliders for banners and Notification Center.
Adds a setting to fade the top and bottom of the Notification Center.
Improves the design on iPad.
Fixes a crash when opening the settings on iPad.
Fixes a crash when notifications from certain tweaks are shown. As a last resort, if FlagPaint7 can’t get the larger icon for an app, it’ll stretch the smaller icon. If you notice this, we’d appreciate if you could let us know what tweak sent the notification so we can get it fixed.
Fixes the Bigger Icon setting being enabled even with TinyBar installed.
Allows album art icons to work without the Bigger Icon setting enabled.

Opener

iOS 6 support is coming (back) to Opener in the next update. In some situations, MapsOpener will open Google Maps but not enter anything in the search box, which we’ll obviously fix. Additionally, that YTOpener update we promised will be coming.

TypeStatus 1.1.1

iH8sn0w can stop bugging me to release it pretty soon - the version of TypeStatus with iOS 7 support and many many bug fixes will finally make its way to the BigBoss repo. The bugs in the current beta (on our repo), which are crashes when the status bar is hidden (#34 - fixed) and contact names not showing (#40) will both obviously be fixed in this final 1.1.1 build.

FlagPaint7 1.3

The next big update to FlagPaint7 will allow you to fine tune icon colors, and provide a method for themes to provide their own icon color (which was promised a while ago). We’re also considering bringing back the original iOS 5/6 FlagPaint design. And of course, bugs from 1.2 (hopefully none!) will be fixed here.

RadiSpot

RadiSpot, originally for Pandora users to open the now playing song in Spotify, had a pull request courtesy of ianb821 adding iTunes Radio support from back in… oops, January. We’ll push that update pretty soon!

DailyPaper

How could I have possibly forgotten about parallax? I really don’t know… but what I do know is that the low quality images issue will be fixed in beta 2 of DailyPaper.

SevenShare

A settings section is coming to SevenShare, so you can pick which services you want to appear. We’ll also add buttons to add a reminder and compose an email.

SwitchSpring

It might not be all that useful any more thanks to the awesome Auxo 2 switcher, but if you still use it, SwitchSpring will get some useful settings to configure it to your liking - including setting an action for swiping down on the card.

We haven’t yet decided whether to support Auxo 2 or not, due to Auxo’s own Quit Apps action when swiping up on the home screen card (which is a lot cooler than SwitchSpring!).

Long-awaited iOS 7 updates

NotiQuiet, MonoBar, tapUnlock, Prime, Plugication - all the lesser-known goodies from iOS 6 and earlier - will get their well-deserved iOS 7 updates.

And some other things…

Opener settings issue

We’re currently sorting out an issue that’s causing Opener’s settings to display an error message (“There was an error loading the preference bundle for Opener”). Until then, you can manually install an update for the HASHBANG Productions Common package which fixes this.

Due to Common being a package for developers to use behind the scenes of their tweaks, you won’t be able to directly find it in Cydia. To get to it, visit the following link on your device:

https://cydia.saurik.com/package/ws.hbang.common

Tap “Open Listing in Cydia” to be taken to Cydia. (If you have LinkOpener, this will happen automatically.) Now you can tap “Modify” in the top-right, and choose “Update”. After you perform a respring, the settings will work.

This also applies to FlagPaint7. This does not affect TypeStatus, since it has a specific requirement for the 1.1 update.

TypeStatus for Mac Oopsie

TypeStatus for Mac beta 1 was actually… a really early build from April 2013. Oops.

Head over to the TypeStatus page to download the real TypeStatus beta. This fixes the lack of support for Obsidian Menu Bar, and email addresses/phone numbers showing instead of contact names. I also included a simple updater that checks when you launch Messages, and optimized files so they take up less space.

TypeStatus for Mac and Obsidian Menu Bar

This post is now outdated; beta 2 fixes this.

The recent beta release of TypeStatus for Mac has an issue that prevents it from showing a welcome message when you install it. That message contained a check box to tell TypeStatus that Obsidian Menu Bar is installed.

If you want to fix that, launch the Terminal app (it’s inside the Utilities folder in Applications) and paste this in:

/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Add Inverted bool true" ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Preferences/ws.hbang.typestatusmac.plist

Then quit and re-open Messages.

That thing you’ve been waiting on for a very long time

After collecting dust on my hard drive for over a year, TypeStatus for Mac has finally entered the public beta stage. If you haven’t already heard of it, TypeStatus started as an iOS jailbreak tweak that swaps out the status bar with the name of the person who is typing an iMessage to you, or has read an iMessage you sent. Now, you can experience it on your Mac.

TypeStatus for Mac is a simple addition to your OS X menu bar that displays typing and read receipt notifications, much like the iOS version. TypeStatus also has built-in support for the awesome Obsidian Menu Bar tweak. This should work on OS X 10.8 and 10.9, however we’ve only tested it on 10.9.

Keep in mind that this is a very early beta; a lot needs to be done to bring TypeStatus for Mac’s features on par with the ones in its iOS version. If you notice any bugs or have any feedback, you can write a comment below or email support@hbang.ws. Enjoy!
