I guess my interest in watches started with my father. He had a Rolex Datejust and an early TAG Heuer 2000 (circa 1986). I used to admire them as a kid, and when he wasn’t around I’d put them on my tiny wrists, all hanging loose, ten times too big.
Many years later, all grown up, I bought my first nice watch, a brand new TAG Heuer 2000 Professional in around 1996… since then I have been fascinated by watches, especially vintage Heuers, mainly the dive watches. I like watches with a bit of history, I even like the really battered and bruised ‘wabi’ watches that have seen a hard life.

A great site and where I found my dream watch.. the 980.026.
I wonder if you could help? I’ve seen one for sale but the badge on the face says TAG HEUER I thought that they were made only with HEUER on the face as they were on the one in your posts.
What do you think?

I have a beautiful black coral/goldtone women’s dive watch from 1982. I was told the watch was no longer waterproof when the battery was last changed, and have not used in in over 10 years. Is there a way I can have it restored to be used as a dive watch again? It is so beautiful, in mint condition. Thank you for any info you can give me.

It is possible – A good watchmaker will be able to renew the seals, and the watch pressure tested, then it should be fit for diving.

I have a Heuer 980.006 that my father bought for me when I became SCUBA certified back in 1981 (I was 13 back then). The watch works and keeps time but the crystal is cracked and needs to be replaced. I have approached several jewelry stores in my area (south florida) to have the crystal replaced but they all tell me that it’s not worth the expense to repair it. Could you suggest where I could
have the watch repaired and do you recommend having it overhauled as well?

Hi Ralph,
I would say that the advice you have had from the jewellery stores is absolute rubbish.
A new glass for one of these is a standard shape and size, and only costs a few dollars from a watch parts suppliers.
Fitting a new crystal & gasket is a very quick job.
I use places in the UK, but I would recommend Craig at chronodeco.com. He is used by quite a few Heuer collectors in the US.
I’d imagine he can fit a new crystal/gasket no problem. As for servicing, this gets a little more tricky as it is quartz. I would suggest you get in touch with Craig (tell him I send you!), and hopefully he’ll be able to help.

Hi…I just came across your post from 2011: https://heuerville.wordpress.com/tag/heuer-980-006l/ through a search for this model, which I inherited from my father 15 years ago and recently unearthed. I would like to make sure it is genuine, as I have no corresponding documents. In your post, you say that the later version of 980.006L was only offered prior to merging with TAG. However, my dad’s has the full TAG Heuer logo on the watch face…did they continue making this model after the merger? I can send you a photo offline if you need to see it…

I was referring to the later Heuer version. Yes, there was a TAG Heuer version post ’85.

Great info for the first time Heuer guy. I have a 1979 or 1980 French made Heuer 400 dive watch. I am the original owner, and the watch sat in a drawer for years until I started wearing it recently. It seems to keep time, but the crystal is scratched and it probably needs to be serviced. Any advice on what to do or not to do with regard to the crystal or service? Should I send to Tag Heuer or use a local jeweler? Will replacing the original crystal devalue the watch? Any advise is much appreciated. I’m in the LA area if anyone can recommend a service facility.

If I were you, I’d use a recommended local watchmaker. A new glass costs very little (couple of bucks), so I’d imagine a local guy wouldn’t charge too much for a new glass & gasket + fitting. IMHO, no it won’t devalue the watch. I’m intrigued that you refer to it as a Heuer 400 – I’ve never hear of this, and wondered why you call it that?

Thanks for the quick reply! I’ll give Craig a call. I had a senior moment on the model….it’s an 844. The number below is 6232 which I assume is a production number? It has the cathedral hour hand.

One more question if it’s not too much trouble. Are movement parts still available for FE4611A? Also, I contacted Craig but he indicated that he no longer works on my watch (don’t know if he meant all Heuers or just the 844). Still looking for recommendations in the Los Angeles area if anyone has one. I’m considering taking the watch to Time-Tec (Kevork).

To be honest, I don’t know. Parts may be available from certain watch parts suppliers, but I’ve never looked into it. Shame that Craig can’t help.. I’m UK based, so I don’t know of any US places to recommend. Maybe put a post up on the Heuer forum, and hopefully you’ll get some guidance on LA based places..

Stewart – great site! My Carrera Automatic Heuer was a wedding present from my wife in 1968. It’s the only good watch I own and I love it more each year. I sent it to the factory for a rather pricey complete service and refinish several years ago and it came back better than ever. When I first got it back it was running several seconds fast and I was a little concerned but after several months it was spot on and has remained so ever since. So I guess the factory knows how best to adjust it.
I think I recall the same watch was sold at one time as a Marlboro cigarette promotion at a very reasonable price. Anyone recall that and what the actual cost was?

That’s a great story, you should cherish the watch.
I’ve never come across a Marlboro promotion for a Carrera (or any Heuer). I’m certain that if that did happen, there would be old advertisement evidence, and it’s never come up amongst collectors. Maybe your wife spent a lot of money on the watch for you, and didn’t want you to me mad, so said it was a promotion? Just a thought. Sounds like a great wife to me!
As for cost in ’68.. no idea, but from past material I’ve seen, maybe something like $40. Which was a fortune then!
