First Day of School x2

Holy Moly where has the time gone?  It felt strange having one child in school, but now to have two in school? All day. Every day.  It’s awesome strange for sure.  Cuddlebug is LOVING it though. 😉

So after a lot of thought and prayer I decided that each year we would come up with a theme that would encompass our hopes for the new school year.  I stumbled across this quote, as well as many others, by Neil Gaiman and fell in love with the message.  Even though it was written for the beginning of a new year,  with our oldest struggling with fears of imperfection and her sister beginning to show signs of the same tendencies, I knew this was the one for us.  And who are we kidding, I need it too since the poor girls get it from me. 🙂

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever. -Neil Gaiman
We now tell the girls every morning to have a great day and to go make mistakes.  I love it when Peanut turns around and says, “Mom, make mistakes today okay.”  It’s so adorable and I’m really hoping that they understand that mistakes are just proof that they are trying and that it’s ok.

Peanut’s first day of Kindergarten.

She was able to test into Kindergarten a year early thanks to Scottsdale Unified School Districts Early Entry Testing Policy.  We are trusting that we made a good decision to have her tested to see if she qualified and enrolling her early.  So far, with the exception of some tears and fears, she seems to be thriving and enjoying it.

Her teacher is Mrs. Colburn and she’s been teaching for almost 20 years, a majority within Redfield. She seems to be the perfect combination of loving and stern for our sweet, tender-hearted girl.  She has also been an excellent help and source of comfort for us Peanut.

Sunshine’s first day of 2nd Grade.

I’m still having a hard time grasping that Sunshine is in the 2nd grade.  It doesn’t seem possible that we have a 7.5 year old, yet she astounds us with her maturity and knowledge every day.

Her teacher is Mr. Carpenter again.  He moved up to the 2nd grade and due to a bullying problem last year, we were given the option of picking her teacher so she could be separated from the bully.  The principal was even nice enough to find out which of Sunshine’s friends she wanted in class with her.  Of course, now knowing that there are three Briana’s in her class, I can’t help but feel guilty  knowing that we played a part in poor Mr. Carpenter’s confusion this year. 😐  That could be why I volunteered for a LOT of things for his class this year.

With 10 days of school out-of-the-way, I’m pretty optimistic that it will be a great year.

Today I am trusting that my sore throat will go away quickly and that it is just from allergies.

I am grateful for those who are my dearest, most special friends.  Their love for others and Christ is evident in their soft-spoken nature and their actions and they have truly touched my life forever.  I love you guys!

I am inspired by my husband who has lost over 100 lbs and has kept it off for almost 2 years.  His diligence is inspiring and I love that he has such a passion for sharing his story and helping others.

Anyone want to share your TGIFs?

I am trusting that our decision to send Lorelai to school a year early (based on her late birthday) is the right one. So far I think I have aged a few years with our first-week-of-school experience.

I am grateful for the time I had to spend with my 3 beautiful girls this summer and though I’m also grateful for the peace in my home throughout the day, I love every minute of being with them.

I am inspired by a quote I found by author Neil Gaiman from the end of last year and the message it sends. I decided that it would be a great theme for our girls and their journeys through Kindergarten and 2nd grade, as well as a reminder for us that mistakes are ok. Mistakes are not the end of the world but proof that we are trying, and it is important for us to realize that our mistakes can change us and change the world around us, for good and for bad. We just need to try.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.
