Hack the Burgh is a yearly hackathon hosted by University of Edinburgh students. It's open to all students, and is a great place to learn or practice programming, with a variety of challenges and talks from our sponsors.
This year, we'll finally be in-person again at the Hilton Carlton hotel, located at the heart of Edinburgh.
Requirements
You can submit to one or more sponsor categories, or you can build anything you want!
Like most hackathons, we prefer that you also make a short video showing off your project, so we can see it at it's best.
You can team up with up to three other people. To keep things fair, teams exceeding four people aren't eligible for prizes.

Marshall Wace - Giving Back Challenge

Rather, we are the sum of our parts, collectively promoting sustainable improvements in the lives of the most disadvantaged in our society and attracting employees and clients who share the same values.
Our Giving Back Challenge focuses on how technology could help in contributing to society or promoting charitable initiatives. This could manifest as an app to increase people’s awareness of social good or a platform for people to share philanthropic ideas. Alternatively, we welcome projects based on data analysis, such as to optimize the efficient use of resources or forecasting events that serve the public interest, whether that be in the U.K. or in a foreign country.

Judging Criteria
-
Technology
How technically impressive was the hack? Was the technical problem the team tackled difficult? Did it use a particularly clever technique or did it use many different components? Did the technology involved make you go "Wow"? -
Design
Did the team put thought into the user experience? How well designed is the interface? For a website, this might be about how beautiful the CSS or graphics are. For a hardware project, it might be more about how good the human-computer interaction is. -
Completion
Does the hack work? Did the team achieve everything they wanted? -
Learning
Did the team stretch themselves? Did they try to learn something new? What kind of projects have they worked on before? Exploration should be rewarded.
