While Matt's family was here, we took everyone ice skating. Kristina, Meghan, and Matt all grew up on the ice so they were naturals out there! Abby was super excited to go. I didn't think the boys would want to go, but once we got there, Nate started asking for ice skates. So after Matt went around the ice a bit with Abby (first by holding her up, then by holding her hand, next by holding her by the back of her shirt), we got Nate laced up with skates. The moment Nate tried to stand up, however, he complained that his feet hurt and he wouldn't put any weight on them. He just went limp with his body. So Matt took him out anyway and spent most of the time trying to get Nate to stand up. It wasn't really successful, but it was a good first attempt. By this time Abby was skating on her own and Jake was asking for a turn. So we got Jake laced up and put him out on the ice. Matt skated around once, mostly by holding Jake up by the shoulders. Then Jake wanted to get off, but immediately asked to go back out. After once more go around, he was done.
All of the cousins had a great time out there and it was fun for me to see Matt and his siblings do their thing on the ice.

*Examples of Nate negotiating:
Me: Nate, in 5 minutes you have to go to bed.
Nate: How about 8 minutes?
Me: Nate, you need to take a nap.
Nate: I don't want to take a nap.
Me: Well, you need to.
Nate: Then can I have a cupcake?
