Announcing the Special Award for the Most Beautiful Czech Book of the Century

State symbols, postage stamps, banknotes, logos of institutions, as well as books, road signs, the orientation system in the Prague Metro, product packaging, and film posters – they’re all part of the Czech national identity. How were these iconic designs created, and who’s behind them?

If you want to see at least some of what you missed at the Kampa Museum, you can try to catch up with Identity at one of the following locations around the world.

Ladislav Sutnar, Karel Teige, Alfons Mucha, Zdeněk Ziegler, Jan Solpera, Rostislav Vaněk, Clara Istlerová, Petr Babák, Robert V. Novák, Tomáš Brousil, Marek Pistora, František Štorm, Zuzana Lednická – these names are just part of the long list of personalities who have participated in or are participating in the creation of the Czech nation’s image, or who have shaped the public space and its transformation from the 20th century to the present. There hasn’t yet been a mapping of the field of graphic design in the Czech Republic; it has long been respected abroad, and the work of its leading figures would each be worthy of monographs. Through a TV series, a book, exhibitions, and a feature-length documentary, the Identity project pays tribute to the outstanding artists who have shaped Czech design.

In addition to presenting more than a century of history in the field, the project’s creators seek to highlight graphic design’s influence on society. Graphic design is something that people have with them their entire lives, but few know the stories behind it. Graphic designers themselves see the field primarily as a public service, one which, in the words of designer Zdeněk Ziegler, “can sometimes be somewhat related to art.”

The seven-episode TV series aired on Czech Television’s ČT Art channel and streamed on its iVysílání service starting on January 11, 2024.

"A show about graphic design has been needed here for a long time. I think everyone has been waiting for it, and that it’s something that can be a lot of fun. What’s more, the field has an incredible tradition. Names like Sutnar and Teige are still known all over the world," says series host Aleš Najbrt.

The series will feature legends of Czech graphic design, including Jan Solpera, Zdeněk Ziegler, Rostislav Vaněk, Clara Istlerová, Karel Haloun, Ota Karlas, Ivan Král, Milan Jaroš, Alan Záruba, František Štorm, Petr Babák, Radana Lencová, Jana Vahalíková, Marek Pistora, Robert V. Novák, Tomáš Brousil, Radek Sidun, Petra Dočekalová, Vojtěch Říha, Martin T. Pecina and many more.

The episodes cover the following topics:

Episode 1

The Public Space

We’re surrounded by letters. Graphic design dominates the public space, and it helps people to find their way in unfamiliar places. Identity’s first episode shows the role visual communication plays today, and how it can help people orient themselves in an unfamiliar environment. Viewers are introduced to the term ‘visual smog,’ and the ways cities can fight it today. Viewers will get to know creators who have influenced the shape of the public space. This episode introduces the work of creators such as Jiří Rathouský, Rostislav Vaněk, and Tomáš Machek.

Episode 2

Media

The media underwent a fundamental transformation in the 20th century. But what hasn’t changed is the fact that its visual appearance was determined by graphic designers. That is why we will present several exceptional print publications. The Identity series’ second episode also shows Czech film posters from the 1960s and 1970s which enchanted the world, and which we still admire today. We get to know the posters’ creators, such as Zdeněk Ziegler and Karel Vaca. The power of Karel Teige’s legacy. Viewers also learn about the fundamental transformation graphic design is undergoing today.

Episode 3

The State and Propaganda

Throughout the 20th century, graphic design played a part in creating history – from the state symbols that form one of the cornerstones of Czech nationhood to propaganda in darker times. The second part of this episode introduces viewers to the visual appearance of key moments in Czech history, which artists such as Vojtěch Preissig and Jaroslav Benda helped to create. We also look at the misuse of graphic design by the totalitarian regime, which turned it into a propaganda tool. But even in difficult times, there were designers who lived and worked and pushed through unique projects, such as the Brussels Style of the late 1950s. Part of the Czech Republic’s visual identity also includes its visual presentation – professional designers consider whether the state’s communication meets the needs and tastes of the 21st century.

Episode 4

Design for Education

Graphic art has shaped our personalities since childhood. Everyone remembers their first exercise book and the handwriting they learned in elementary school. In the fourth episode of the Identity series, we introduce the design of a new model for teaching handwriting – the Comenia Script typeface. We also focus on books and their designers: Exceptional personalities of the 20th century such as František Muzika and Oldřich Hlavsa, as well as contemporary designers who have won awards in the Most Beautiful Czech Book of the Year competition. Iva Knobloch presents a critical perspective on the low quality of textbooks. The episode wouldn’t be complete without a look at the network of professional universities that have been dedicated to graphic design for more than 100 years. Representatives of these institutions discuss how teaching has changed and the prospects graduates face. The discussion includes representatives of the Academy of Arts Architecture and Design in Prague, the Brno University of Technology, the University of West Bohemia, J.E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, and Tomas Bata University in Zlín.

Episode 5

Boundaries and Gray Areas

Graphic design is an integral part of culture, and its creators often work across different disciplines. In this episode we present an extraordinary personality, the graphic designer, sculptor, author and typographer Josef Váchal, who made a significant mark in the field. We also take a look at graphic design from the other side – ‘Creativity’ from amateur designers, which grows like weeds in Czech cities. Radek Sidun tells us how to fight mistakes. Vladimir 518 reflects on the relationship between graphic design and graffiti. Together with Karel Haloun and Viktor Karlík we evaluate the phenomenon of samizdat and its importance for the visual culture of the 1980s. Joska Skalník shows specific works from the period. Artists who move on the boundaries between art, typography and graphic design include the typographer and musician František Štorm, whose fonts have conquered the world, and Robert V. Novák, whose adaptation of the psalter for the Trappist Order won the Czech Grand Design award.

Episode 6

The Everyday

Every day from morning till night we’re surrounded by the work of graphic designers and typographers, but people might not even be aware of it. The sixth episode of the Identity series reminds viewers what graphic design is: From postage stamps, to the visual identity of cultural institutions, to product packaging. And, by the way, is there anyone who doesn’t know the famous candies that still use Zdeněk Rykr’s work? We’ll focus in detail on specific works that have become etched in Czechs’ memories, whether it be Oldřich Kulhánek’s banknotes or the work of Jan Solpera. In this episode, we present the diverse aspects of a graphic designer’s job, as well as the technological changes that the profession has undergone in the past 100 years.

Episode 7

Czechs in the World

Czech graphic designers have always been among the world’s best, which is why in this episode we look back at the work of Alphons Mucha as well as Ladislav Sutnar, who became so famous in the United States that he is considered a pioneer of modern visual communication. Oldřich Menhart, a prominent Czech typographer, artistic calligrapher, and type designer, is the creator of print typefaces, some of which have become internationally recognized. Czech graphic design in the world is primarily represented by type designers, and viewers get to know the unique work of Tomáš Brousil, Veronika Burian, Vojtěch Říha, and Martin Vácha. The episode also recalls the International Bienniale of Graphic Design, which has been held in the Czech Republic since 1963 thanks to its founder, Jan Rajlich Sr. But the youngest generation isn’t left behind. They’re communicating actively with a globalized world and are taking home numerous awards in international competitions.

Museum Kampa

The exhibition on all three floors of Museum Kampa shows the best of the history of Czech graphic design, i.e. works in which aesthetic quality, good technical realisation, craftsmanship and functionality go hand in hand. Visitors may see several hundred exhibits from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day: iconic posters, exquisitely designed books and magazines, dozens of logotypes, the development of state symbols and navigation systems, as well as exceptional examples of graphic design from the era of audiovisual media.

The exhibition, curated by Filip Blažek, Linda Kudrnovská and David Korecký, is the part of the multi-genre project Identity – the story of Czech graphic design (www.projektidentita.cz), which includes a TV series broadcast in January and February 2024 on Czech Television, a forthcoming feature film on graphic design, which will be released in Czech cinemas on 10 October, and a book of the same name, which was published to accompany the exhibition and is also a monograph on graphic design.

The exhibition is divided into three floors thematically focused on public space, shared experiences and the private world. Iconic works will be highlighted through special labels with arrows to ensure that no visitor misses key exhibits. In accompanying texts, visitors may learn about the broader cultural, historical and political context of the exhibited artefacts, i.e. how graphic design influences society and vice versa.

The exhibition is a joint project of the Kampa Museum, Typo and Mowshe. The graphic design is by Marvil studio, the architecture is by Adam Blažek, Jan Kloss and Matěj Činčera.

World-renowned auctioneer and Czech-American Nicholas Lowry flies from New York to Prague as a passionate collector to map out what has shaped and defines the Czech national identity. His travels around the Czech Republic take him to iconic locations of graphic design, including the cities of Zlín, Litomyšl, Brno, and Pilsen, where he explores the work of Tomáš Baťa, Josef Váchal, Alfons Mucha, and Ladislav Sutnar, as well as trying out the famous Pilsner beer. The journeys the quirky guide takes in his tartan suit also lead him to South Moravia in search of the aesthetics of wine labels. He goes on a hiking trip along routes marked by the Czech Tourist Club with their innovative trail marking system, and he meets the current generation of artists such as Petr Babák, Martin Pecina, and Aleš Najbrt. Nicho gets closer to his own roots through uncovering the Czech identity – his great-uncle founded the Primeros factory in Prague, which also spoke to the history of Czech graphic identity.

The film Identity: A Czech Graphic Design Love Story is part of the extensive Identity project, which pays tribute to Czech graphic design and has already brought viewers a successful television series. In terms of content and format, however, these are two completely different audiovisual works.
