“I wonder if innocence is something like a stereotype? That innocence is something that’s either there or not? Throughout history it feels that girls were supposed to be pure until they’re just not. That innocence is just gone, vanished. I like painting figures that are almost hovering in this in-between space between innocence and losing it, or have thoroughly cast their innocence and begun to write their own narrative. I think a lot about how the loss of innocence is actually a form of deep knowledge and perhaps not really a bad thing. Knowledge is a form of power, after all, and society has traditionally had a fear and distrust of powerful women. I like to play with that.”
