The performance of Incarnation of the Beast ended with a bang last month at 72-13. With three sold-out shows, we would like to thank everyone who came down and show their support!
We caught up with our audiences after each performance, understanding their thoughts and feelings towards the show. Some also penned down their thoughts on blogs! Many shared with us about how you could relate to the themes presented in Incarnation of the Beast. With nine performers presenting their personal take through movement in the performance, we’ve found that everyone has a special moment which they can relate to.
Enormously, the struggles were very physical and it resonated, it certainly has a response and it wasn’t just a personal response because you can feel the tension of the room as well.

And there was this beautiful moment there, it was as though the shadows were performing.
– Edlyn Artistica Ng, 15 Oct
The most significant part will definitely be the last part, where the performers are in repetitive poses, because that seems really really painful.

Some expressed how intriguing and refreshing this work is, and how thought provoking you find the concept behind Incarnation of the Beast. We’re incredibly heartened to see how all of you have been excited for this new, experimental work, and are supporting Joavien, a provocative performance maker with a unique style.
It’s just nice to see those kind of bodies move on stage. It’s quite refreshing.

I expected nothing coming to the show but I was wowed. I can’t even breathe, because the space was so quiet and so intense.
– Cheryl, 16 Oct
The emotions conveyed various spectrum of moments I have encountered in my life. Every fragment pieced together in one display has left me with a lot of reflection to do.

During Joavien’s residency at TheatreWorks, along with nine other collaborators, they were explored the depths of 72-13’s space for Incarnation of the Beast. From the performance, many shared how 72-13 is flexible and unconventional, yet cosy and welcoming, offering a unique atmosphere.
It’s very different, it’s very convertible. In the sense that I see it in different combinations so I think it’s the space that really allows the artists to use as they like… their imagination is their limit, with the space.
– Edlyn Artistica Ng, 15 Oct
It’s so unconventional for a theater and it is so flexible to convert it to suit the various types of performances.
– Tanya Ang, 17 Oct
I like the history, the architecture, and it’s the only white space theater in Singapore.
– Yi Ling, 17 Oct
Incarnation of the Beast is a performance which reflects the deepest emotions and struggles of human beings. With nine different collaborators coming together to share their unique stories, we noticed how it has impacted some audiences and how the work has mattered to you.
I like how it got me questioning like what constitutes a piece of theatre or dance and what you need to show the audience for them to enter the work if there is one narrative.
– Teoh Jun Vinh, 16 Oct
I feel like what this show is different from the others is that it gives me space as an audience.
– Venytha, 17 Oct
It’s good to go to such events and disconnect for a moment that helps you live more. Helps you remember that you’re still a human being.
– Justin Sim, 17 Oct
