Curtain Call – INCARNATION OF THE BEAST

Curtain Call – INCARNATION OF THE BEAST

The performance of Incarnation of the Beast ended with a bang last month at 72-13. With three sold-out shows, we would like to thank everyone who came down and show their support!

We caught up with our audiences after each performance, understanding their thoughts and feelings towards the show. Some also penned down their thoughts on blogs! Many shared with us about how you could relate to the themes presented in Incarnation of the Beast. With nine performers presenting their personal take through movement in the performance, we’ve found that everyone has a special moment which they can relate to.

Enormously, the struggles were very physical and it resonated, it certainly has a response and it wasn’t just a personal response because you can feel the tension of the room as well.

– Han, 15 Oct

And there was this beautiful moment there, it was as though the shadows were performing.

– Edlyn Artistica Ng, 15 Oct

The most significant part will definitely be the last part, where the performers are in repetitive poses, because that seems really really painful.

– Shiela, 16 Oct

Some expressed how intriguing and refreshing this work is, and how thought provoking you find the concept behind Incarnation of the Beast. We’re incredibly heartened to see how all of you have been excited for this new, experimental work, and are supporting Joavien, a provocative performance maker with a unique style.

It’s just nice to see those kind of bodies move on stage. It’s quite refreshing.

– Viknesh Kobinathan, 15 Oct

I expected nothing coming to the show but I was wowed. I can’t even breathe, because the space was so quiet and so intense.

– Cheryl, 16 Oct

The emotions conveyed various spectrum of moments I have encountered in my life. Every fragment pieced together in one display has left me with a lot of reflection to do.

– Justin Sim, 17 Oct

During Joavien’s residency at TheatreWorks, along with nine other collaborators, they were explored the depths of 72-13’s space for Incarnation of the Beast. From the performance, many shared how 72-13 is flexible and unconventional, yet cosy and welcoming, offering a unique atmosphere.

It’s very different, it’s very convertible. In the sense that I see it in different combinations so I think it’s the space that really allows the artists to use as they like… their imagination is their limit, with the space.

– Edlyn Artistica Ng, 15 Oct

It’s so unconventional for a theater and it is so flexible to convert it to suit the various types of performances.

– Tanya Ang, 17 Oct

I like the history, the architecture, and it’s the only white space theater in Singapore.

– Yi Ling, 17 Oct

Incarnation of the Beast is a performance which reflects the deepest emotions and struggles of human beings. With nine different collaborators coming together to share their unique stories, we noticed how it has impacted some audiences and how the work has mattered to you.

I like how it got me questioning like what constitutes a piece of theatre or dance and what you need to show the audience for them to enter the work if there is one narrative.

– Teoh Jun Vinh, 16 Oct

I feel like what this show is different from the others is that it gives me space as an audience.

– Venytha, 17 Oct

It’s good to go to such events and disconnect for a moment that helps you live more. Helps you remember that you’re still a human being.

Our audience member shares about INCARNATION OF THE BEAST!

We have received many words of encouragement and personal thoughts from our audience members about their experience at Incarnation of the Beast. Thank you!

One of our audience member, dumbriyani shared his/her thoughts about the performance, sharing on how it has left him speechless.

I also was continuously challenged, trying to act as a translator to myself, making sense of each movement. I realized that their actions (so small sometimes) were giving structure to ideas and emotions:  Expression of human behavior from its most practical aspects (breathing, movement of arms and legs) to its more abstract and spiritual ones (tragedy). The piece located tragedy as a kind of comic ontology of the human condition.  I slowly started to see images that resonated viscerally with me, things I was not able to articulate. And this kind of tough, speechlessness was welcome.

Let’s hear from our ambassadors!

During the shows of Incarnation of the Beast, we had several ambassadors who helped us out for Front-of-House (FOH) duties. Some of them managed to catch the show and were eager to share their thoughts and feelings towards the performance. Here we have a quote from one of our ambassadors, Khaw Han Chung:

I believe this performance has allowed audiences to further understand about the concept of tragedy which will touch your heart deeply, while feeling the sense of awkwardness when facing such tragedies.

Thank you Han Chung for helping out and sharing!

TODAY reviews INCARNATION OF THE BEAST

On 17 October 2015, Mayo Martin from TODAY reviewed the performance of INCARNATION OF THE BEAST. As he describes and elaborates on the various parts of the performance, he shared his views on the ideas and performance presented by Joavien and her collaborators,

The best moments for me were the tableaus in the beginning. But these moments of seeming artifice in stillness give way to a freer expression of their respective “tragedies”, many of the actions seem to ring false.

I guess all of us go through some sort of pain in life, but I think the most important thing I learn out of this is how to let go. That’s ultimately the key to happiness.

Acting students from LASALLE share their experience

Last night, we held a post-show discussion for a group of acting students from Lasalle. We hope to engage them further through the dialogue and improve their learning experience at the show. During the discussion, the students raised several questions for Joavien, as well as for the collaborators. They were introduced to the working process of Incarnation of the Beast and were able to get a better understanding of the show. We caught up with two students, to find out their experience at the production last night.

I expected nothing coming to the show but I was wowed. I can’t even breathe, because the space was so quiet and so intense.

Opened last night, Incarnation of the Beast was a great success! Once again, Joavien Ng was featured in The Business Times, City Buzz section today. As described by reporter Helmi Yusof, Joavien’s ability to extract genuine emotions and truths has definitely made her as an excellent choreographer. “The result is likely to be a work that affirms Ng as one of the best independent choreographers in the scene”.
