
Nathan Gray is a doctor specializing in Internal Medicine and Palliative Care, and an associate professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He uses comics and other artwork to promote empathy, educate others, and sometimes explore the ironies of the medical world.
His work has been published in The Washington Post, USA Today, The L.A. Times, The British Medical Journal, Topic Magazine, Spiralbound (Medium), the American Medical Association Journal of Ethics, the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Narrative Magazine. For many years, he was a regular contributor to his parents’ fridge. Nathan’s L.A. Times graphic editorials won both first and fourth place prizes from the California News Publisher’s Association for 2020 editorial cartooning.
His debut book, The Human Remains: Drawing Out Compassion in Medicine, a full-length graphic memoir exploring the ways that doctors are shaped and sometimes mis-shaped will be released in November 2026 with Penn State University Press’ Graphic Mundi Imprint.
