15 Months

Calin had his 15 month check-up recently and here are his stats

Weight
15 months: 22lbs - 14th percentile
12 months: 20.4lbs - 16th percentile

Height
15 months: 30.3" - 19th percentile
12 months: 29" - 25th percentile

Head Circumference
15 months: 18.3" - 24th percentile
12 months: 18" - 31st percentile

I gave a quick update on him in my last post, but I still have lots more to share :)
Sorry if these pictures are boring, they're all I had

In addition to all the words I listed in the last post he also says "this" (thought it sounds more like "these") all the time, "eye" and "side" for outside. Oh, and he's been saying please all the time lately :) Facial features he can locate are eyes, nose, and mouth. Eye is definitely his favorite though since he says that word so well. He loves to point to eyes and say "EYE!!"

Image
Just a random picture of Jordan and Calin running through the library. Isn't that something you're not supposed to do? :)

In the mornings when Jordan is up with him and I'm still asleep, I often hear Calin outside my door saying "sshhhh, sshhh" to Jordan. He even puts his finger up to his mouth, it's so cute (ok, I obviously don't see him put his finger to his mouth when I'm in bed, but he does it other times too, like if Jordan is napping, or if someone is whispering on tv).

He finally gave up one one of his naps, and is down to one per day. He's usually tired around 10, so I put him down with a book and he "reads" a book for a while before going to sleep, and usually wakes up around 1. When he wakes up, he likes to play in his crib for a while, so if we try to get him out too early, he throws a fit. Fine with me! I'm glad he likes his bed. He's still going to bed at 7 each night. So we start his bedtime routine at 6:30 with a bath, read scriptures, say a family prayer, and lay him down by 7.

Image
This was his first experience with a drinking fountain. He thought it was so fun.

Some of his favorite foods lately are scrambled eggs, cheese (he hated cheese for the longest time. Then one day I gave him pepperjack, and now he's hooked. darn.), bananas, and oranges or clementines.

He still loves to climb and explore. And he still has no problem with us leaving him with other people. We've taken him into nursery for a little bit a few times, and he has so much fun playing with the other kids and toys that he honestly has no idea we are still in the room. He's so independent. He never went through separation or stranger anxiety, even a little bit. But maybe he still will?

Image
We love our local library. They just remodeled it, and it's very nice! Calin heard kids in the isle over, so he was scoping out the scene. I love how he's on his tippy-toes :)

The other day when I was so so sick, I actually started to cry. It must have been the first time Calin has ever seen me cry because he looked so scared! He didn't know what to do, so I just put out my arms, and he ran right over to me and gave me the sweetest hug ever. Then after a moment, he pulled back and looked at me with wide eyes to make sure his hug made me feel all better and that I had stopped crying :) It was so precious!

Lately, when Jordan is getting ready to leave for school, Calin latches onto him like a leach, and starts waving bye to me. Jordan will usually pick him up, and he just keeps looking at me while waving, laughing, and saying "bye!" It's so funny to watch! When Jordan finally get's free from him, he'll give in and start saying bye to Jordan and blow him kisses before he leaves.

Image
He loves ice cream. He doesn't get it too often, but Jordan likes to sneak him some once in a while :)

Oh, and I almost forgot the big one - He's allergic to peanuts!! UGH! How can that be? Jordan's not allergic to a single thing, and neither am I. Especially not peanuts! Are you kidding, chocolate and peanut butter is one of my favs! But Jordan gave him a bite of a peanut butter granola bar around 12 months, then I made some sort of dessert that had peanut butter in it, accidently dropped some on the counter, and he swiped it with his little finger and later that night had red spots around his mouth. They looked like hives, but he wasn't itching them. Then another night I was eating some peanuts while feeding him dinner, and I don't know if I dropped one, or what, but later he had the same hive looking spots around his mouth again. Thankfully he's never had a severe reaction. I'm not sure if he just mildly allergic, or because he has only been exposed to a small amount, but we did buy some children's benedryl just in case. Such a bummer! Hopefully he'll outgrow it, but I think it's something like only 20% of kids outgrow a peanut allergy. We have gotten used to watching things with peanuts since our nephew Tanner is severely allergic. I think that has helped us to be more cautious.

Well, today Jordan has 3 finals, and then he's done for the semester :) I'm very proud of him! It was a tough semester, yet he balanced his time so well! He spent so much time at home, and with his calling, and even worked a couple days a week. Oh, and of course submitted all those darn grad school apps, and took the GRE. It was rough, but he still managed to do very well in all his classes and other responsibilities :) Calin and I are looking forward to all the time we will get to spend with him over Christmas break!! And Jordan and I are planning our own little trip to Disnelyland while we're in California next week, just the two of us :) Should be lots of fun!

Update

It's been a while since I have posted so here is an update

I was sick all week last week, and any time I could manage to pull my self out of bed I was working on editing pictures for this cute family.
Photobucket
Photobucket
I loved their outfits! They were just perfect! The boys were adorable with the cutest personalities! We had a lot of fun even though it was freezing outside! Luckily I brought some hot chocolate so we could warm up a tad :)

I finally finished their pictures earlier this week, and now have moved on to my many other projects in progress. I finally finished our Christmas cards and sent those off. Though I am so worried that I thought I sent some and actually didn't. My brain is just not working right lately!

We got our first Christmas tree this year! Since we are never home for Christmas, we have a hard time buying one to only have up for 2 weeks. But this year we got one FREE with all the lights and ornaments! Our Bishop cut a 13ft tree and the ward decorated it and gave it away at our ward Christmas party. We had to cut it in half to fit in our apartment, and it is pretty bare, and not the type you would find at a Christmas tree lot, but I'm just so happy to have a tree! And a real one that adds a fresh Christmas pine scent to our home!
I don't have any pictures of it, but here is a boring little video so you can see how funny our tree looks.

And here are some more videos of Calin.

Jordan thinks it's so fun to have him lift our scriptures.

And lately he's been saying "uhhh...." before replying to a question. It always makes us laugh because he says it so thoughtful, hahaha. He can say quite a few words, and we were trying to get him to say some in the video, but he never does it when we want him to :)

Some of his words are:
cheese, more, yes, lights, shoes, socks, blanket, ball, and a phrase "I did it!" On rare occasions you he says "please" "thank you" "night-night" "love you" and "kiss" But he only says those about twice a week.

He almost has all his teeth in (at least I think they get a break before 2nd molars start coming through). He has 8 on bottom, and 6 on top. He's just waiting for two more to break through. And those 2 are causing trouble! He's been drooling like crazy, and pretty whinny this week with a runny nose. Hopefully they break through soon!!

Well, I think that's all. We did go sledding last weekend, but forgot our camera. We took some videos with Jordan's phone, but I haven't uploaded them yet. Maybe another day :)

Thanksgiving 2010

Our Thanksgiving turned out pretty great.
We bought a turkey breast earlier this week when we thought it was just going to be us, and then bought another one when we found out two other families were coming over to join us (to make sure we had lots of leftovers!!). So I put both in the oven together and they actually turned out pretty good! The gravy was almost edible. It was a little too salty.
Everyone else brought lots of yummy food too, and we had a great feast!

Jordan was so great! He got up early Thursday morning to grab a newspaper so we could look through the black friday adds. Then he headed to Idaho Falls a little before 2am this morning to stand in line at Target for a new TV (and other things, but that was his main motive). We made a shopping list for him, and he found every single thing on the list from the 3 stores, and made it back around 7am. What a trooper! (he's napping now :) He totally made out like a bandit with all his great finds! Everything was a steal, but the electronics were the pricier items so we're happy we finally have an external hard drive, and portable dvd players for the car (those will be so nice for long trips with Calin!!!), and a TV that works! I was SO set on NOT gettting a TV till after we moved from Rexburg or till ours completely went out, but a 40" LCD 1080p HDTV for $298 was too good to pass up. Now we just have to figure out how it works. We figured out how to play a DVD, but the remote won't function properly with it (actually none of our remotes function properly with this TV, even the DVD player remote that I have never programed to the TV messes it up). And we still need to figure out how to hook up the cable. Oh, and it's 1" too wide for our entertainment center so we have to turn it diagonally to fit, but we are still super happy with it!!
Image

And here is a video for the grandparents. Calin's latest word is "light" and he sure loves them! I think he's really going to enjoy Christmas time!

Projects

I have had so many projects going lately that I just remembered on Wednesday that I need to start working on our Christmas card (I usually have it done by now). I'm just so shocked that Thanksgiving is less than a week away. I haven't even started looking at all the leaked Black Friday adds!

Anyway, here are a few of my recent projects.

My cousin is having a little girl next month, and I saw that she wanted a moby wrap and I just loved my homemade wrap, so I bought some fabric and used freezer paper to paint on "baby byrd" (the baby's last name is Byrd) and used some to make a bird applique. I just hope it works well for her!
Photobucket
I also made her a little snugly blanket with some satin and minky. It's Calin's absolute favorite, so I'm sure it will be hers too :)
Photobucket

And this next project has been the reason my house has been in total disarray the past couple weeks. And the reason I have been utterly exhausted lately!
Calin's Quiet Book.
I had no idea the hours and days and months this book would require!
I started this almost a year ago, but have recently been really hunkering down to get it finished.
I think this fishing page is my favorite. Calin loves it! He gets so excited everyime he "catches" a fish! This page alone keeps him busy for quite a while! I still have to make the magnetic fishing pole, but the rest of the page is complete.
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket
I have cut out pieces for so many pages, that I'm not sure they will all fit in one book (I think I have 18?). I might have to turn it into two. We will see. Hopefully I get it done before Christmas. Though, I decided completing our Christmas card needs to be first priority!
Which reminds me -
For all our friends and family: if you know we don't have your address, or aren't sure, but want a card, email it to me! kylaspence @gmail and we'll be sure to get one to you :)

And Jordan has ALL of next week off!!! We are so excited!! It will be so nice to have him home for a whole week!!! But what am I going to do for Thanksgiving?! It's just the 3 of us. I can't cook a WHOLE turkey just for us, can I? If anyone else is going to be alone for Thanksgiving here in The Burg, maybe we should get together! Let us know! : -)

M&M Spence Pics 2010

While Matt and Mickie were visiting for Halloween, we ventured out in the cold rainy weather to snap some family pictures for them before they headed home.
The colors were pretty, and you can hardly tell it was all cold and wet. And though we were only out there for 15 min max, we did get some cute shots!

And the plus of having taken them myself, is I get to post them before she does :)

Dentist - Calin's First Visit

It's snowing, and I think I'm ok with it. It seems to have stayed warmer longer, so its final arrival has not caught me too much by surprise this year. I just hope it doesn't last till June.

{Sorry there are not pictures. Actually, this is a pretty boring post, so feel free to skip it}

Calin had his first dentist appointment this morning. Since he only has one molar in, they didn't do a fluoride treatment, but it we had a great consultation with the pediatric dentist.

Here are some things he said:

* no fruit snacks

* milk only with meals, and water the rest of the day

* he asked if Calin drinks juice from his sippy cup and when I said "no, he actually doesn't drink juice at all." he said, "count your blessings!" And really, Calin gets enough fruit in the day that he doesn't need juice, so I'll probably try to keep him away from it for as long as possible :)

* Luckily Jordan and I aren't too cavity-prone, but he said to becarful how much we share with Calin so we don't give him our bad cavity-causing bacteria :) I never even thought about that.

* Oh, and he said to use a tiny swipe of flouride toothpaste when possible, and to floss since Calin's teeth are so close together

Calin seems to be on a good track to healthy teeth, but we'll see. He used to love brushing his teeth, but it's become a bit of a fight lately. And his teeth are so close together that flossing needs to be a more frequent habit with him. Thankfully he doesn't go down with a bottle/sippy cup. But we do sometimes give him a snack at night if he wakes up (usually once a week), so that's just as bad. I need to work on breaking that habit!

I am so happy to hear my eyelashes will grow back :) That is good news!

I also had a PT look at my knee today. He thinks the SI (sacroiliac) joint is that out of place, but we're not entirely convinced. I'll do some of the exercises he suggested and see if it gets better though.
Image
And for the past month or so I've been totally craving cinnamon bears. A few weeks ago I went to two stores looking for them. Today I finally found some at the grocery store and can't stop eating them. I really wanted the ones with the sugar coating, but these are good too. I've never even been a big fan of cinnamon bears. Apparently I am now :-)

Will they grow back??

Last week while I was getting ready for the day, Calin bumped my arm as I was curling my eyelashes.
I counted 40+ eyelashes that were ripped out!
Is it just a myth that eyelashes don't grow back? Someone please tell me it is!
Photobucket
It could have been worse. I could have ripped out the outer eyelashes instead of just the inner half. Or even worse - all of them!

Also, my right leg has refused to straighten all week. So I have to limp. We're not quite sure what's wrong with it. I can't pinpoint a single thing that may have caused it. But it kills when I try to straighten it, and nothing has help. I've tried heat, rest, meds, massage, etc. It hurts all day and all night long. I might go into the PT clinic Jordan works at tomorrow, but I doubt they'll know either.

So I'm sort of a mess lately :-)

At least the weather has been nice!

Halloween 2010

Photobucket
This Halloween we were planning a Wizard of Oz theme. But Calin had a pretty bad cold all week, so we decided not to take him to the ward party on Friday, so I kind of gave up on the costumes, and I went to our ward party alone.
I loved the way my ruby red slippers turned out! Those were definitely my favorite part of the Dorthy costume! I just used an old pair of black heels, modpodge and red glitter. It was a bit of a mess, but worth it!
Matt and Mickie came up on Friday night. Saturday morning I was going to take family pictures for them, but Ty threw up in the middle of the night so we postponed the pictures till Sunday.
Nate and Kelly came Saturday afternoon, and we all headed to Craigo's for lunch with Mickie's brothers & fam.
We were planning on carving pumpkins after lunch, but ended up chatting instead. And around 5 we headed to a kid's carnival on campus. It wasn't much, but the kids enjoyed themselves.
Calin's favorite was definitely the hulahoops!! He Loved them! They also had a trunk or treat set up outside when we left. Calin had so much fun going from candy bowl to candy bowl, and was so good about picking one, sometimes 3, pieces and putting it in his bag.
{We just used Calin's lion costume from last year, and Jordan was such a trooper with his costume! Since I never finished it, he agreed to put on some overalls and stuff raffia in the pockets :) And Tanner let him wear an extra hat he had in the car, hahahahaha}
Photobucket

After the carnival we all headed out trick-or-treating. It was so fun watching the kids trick-or-treat together!! They were all so cute! And Tanner was so patient waiting on his little cousins!
Photobucket
Photobucket

After trick-or-treating we all came back to our house for dinner while we watched the giants & Oregon games.
After the games, we put on New Moon, and Mickie and I made caramel apples, while the boys wrote grad school essays.
Here are some funny pictures of our caramel apple attempts. I will have to remember to buy some Fit next year to clean the apples with! The caramel kept melting right off! They were still tasty though!

Our Weekend

We had a wonderful weekend!

To start it off, Jordan's younger brother received his mission call to the Tuxtla Gutierrez Mexico mission! He doesn't leave till February, so he still has lots of time to practice his Spanish :)

Calin was better Friday morning, so we decided to go ahead with our Utah trip to visit friends and family.

Calin and Ty had SO much fun playing together! Here is a video of them playing one of their favorite games.
{Calin came away from the weekend with LOTS of bruises}

Saturday morning I took some pictures of this fun cute couple
{ They are my husband's brother's wife's sister's husband's brother Spencer and wife Stephanie - did you follow that?? :-) }

Photobucket

That afternoon we visited with our good friends Scott and Aimee who were visiting from Kansas. It was so fun to see them! Aimee and I were roommates and stayed really close after we both got married. Jordan and Scott became great friends too. So we've missed them a lot since they moved to Kansas this past Spring. We went to Gardener's Village and all of the fall/halloween decorations were SO cute, but it started pouring while we were there so we had to cut out trip short.

Photobucket

We left Sunday morning and drove up to Pocatello to watch our nephews while Kelly was in labor. At 3:07 pm cute little Ashlyn Raye was born! Our first niece. Isn't she sweet!

Photobucket

We headed over to the hospital a little after 5 with the boys. Tanner would ask every 10 minutes when he could go to the hospital, it was so cute! They were so excited to go see baby Ashlyn!
{Can you believe how beautiful Kelly looks after just having a baby?!!}
Photobucket
Photobucket
Photobucket

Calin thought Kelly's room was SO fun! He kept running through the curtain and crawling behind her bed
Photobucket

When it was time to leave Tanner refused to go without Kelly. He was so sad that he had to leave his mommy and his baby (he calls Ashlyn his baby) at the hospital. But Dallin was just happy and excited to have a baby sister!
Photobucket

The weather this weekend was terrible, but we still had a great time, with many exciting events!

Still Sick

First -
Thanks for the sweet comments from my last post about the Larson's! And if you really will let me take your pictures email me so we can schedule a time!! And hurry cause I'm booking up fast! hahaha, jk. But you still should hurry cause I'm just so excited! :-)

Second -

I finally took Calin to the doctor today.

Turns out it wasn't just teething. He has Roseola.

We noticed the rash last night on his abdomen, and by the morning it had spread to his face, back, arms and legs. So I took him to the pediatrician this morning, and Roseola is his diagnosis. The doctor also said the irritability (which has been extreme the past few days! Terrible!) is probably worse since he's cutting teeth. Now it's just a waiting game. He said I could try a little children's benadryl, but most likely the rash will go away within the next few days on it's own. He fits all of the symptoms for Roseola perfectly, except fatigue. Calin has a very consistent sleeping pattern, but his sleep has been cut in half the past two days. He didn't nap at all Tuesday or Wednesday, and only slept 8 hours last night. Thankfully he's down for a nap right now. Maybe he'll get back on track and be a little happier today? I hope so!

{Larson Family}

Last week I took some pictures for some friends of ours. We've known them for almost 3 years now. And over the three years, it seems Tristen and I are always paired up through visiting teaching. Whether we're partners, or I visit her, or such as right now, she visits me. To have good friends that long in Rexburg is quite the accomplishment for us! Just about all our other friends that were here at BYU-I when we got married have moved on, so I'm glad they will be around a couple more semesters also :) Tristen is the nicest person ever, Derek is hilarious, and little Keegan is so sweet, so they are always fun to be around! And though we were rushing through our little mini photo shoot (we had just over 40 minutes and two locations to shoot before the ward flag football game) they were so easy going and we got lots of good shots.

Aren't they such a cute family!

Photobucket

I'm so glad Tristen let me take their family pictures! Photography is just one of my hobbies, but I love it! And it's been quite a while since I've taken pictures of someone other than Calin, and now I'm wishing more people would let me take their pictures . . .

Anyone???

Sick & BOO-ed

Calin's has had a fever for the past couple days.

But I don't need a thermometer to tell me my little guy isn't feeling well.

When he takes 2 two-hour naps before church, then sits quietly on my lap for an hour and a half during sacrament meeting, I know something is wrong.

So Calin and I just stayed long enough for me to sing in church yesterday. Which could have gone a lot better {the singing that is}

I actually wasn't too nervous about singing, but then as almost an hour passed with Calin being so mellow, I started getting nervous. The possibility that he really was sick (I had just thought it was teething) started to really worry me. Jordan and I had already planned for me to bring Calin up to the stand so he could hold him while I sang, but as the second speaker was finishing up, I had this horrible vision of Calin throwing up all over Jordan in front of everyone in the middle of our song. This sent me into a complete panic! And I didn't have time to calm myself down, or figure out what to do, because it was time for me to sing. I brought him up with me anyway, and every second I fought the urge to look behind me and make sure Calin wasn't throwing up. And he didn't. Whew! I was so worried, my hands were numb, and I could hardly focus on what I was singing. (If you saw Calin yesterday, or even today, you would probably think he was about to throw up too. The poor kid looks miserable).
He slept another 3 hours after church. Then 12 hours straight through the night. He has taken extra long naps today as well. I know he has some teeth coming in, and at least two canine's and one molar have just barely broken through, but this has been rough on him. I'm enjoying the extra snuggle time, but hope he feels better soon!

Onto the happy stuff - We have been Boo-ed!
{ Thank you secret Boo-er! Your treats were very yummy! }

Image
{there were more treats, but we ate them before I could even get the camera out}

Aren't the little signs so cute! I love this little "BOO" tradition that goes around the neighborhood! It's so much fun! And who wouldn't love some yummy Halloween treats!! If your neighborhood hasn't started a "BOO" yet, click here to get this same "BOO" printables, and start it up!

Now, what treats should I send out . . .

Have I Mentioned . . .

. . . that I now have a full-time walker?
{ Cause it's been going on for quite a few weeks now }

this first video was taken about a month ago when he was first starting to walk. I love how he fake falls :)

this video was taken just this morning

Or have I told you how funny I think it is when I ask Calin if he needs his diaper changed, and he exaggeratedly nods his head and goes to find a diaper to bring to me. But once I have the diaper in hand, he doesn't lay down and patiently let me change him, instead he takes off as fast as he can in the opposite direction (giggling of course) and makes me chase him before we get down to business. But he knows exactly what a diaper is, and where to find it, which makes me smile!
Did I mention Jordan sent off his first set of grad school apps yesterday! Whew! Only a few more to go (why can't everyone use PTCAS?!?)! Can't wait till they are all sent! Though, then we really will be waiting. For a long time too. hahaha, but we'll be that much closer :)

Remember how I told you I have been asked to sing again in church this Sunday - WHAT?! I didn't? Oh, right, that's because I just found out. This time it's with my good friend Shanna (who has an amazing voice!) with a solo! Oh, and the soonest our accompanist can practice is tomorrow. I know Shanna could pull this off no problem, but I'm not so confident it's actually going to happen.

Now I'm sure I have mentioned all the projects I have going lately (blankets, quiet book, photos, costumes . . . ) But have I told you I'm also trying to get a good cleaning schedule down. I'm usually pretty bad at keeping up on all the household cleaning stuff that needs to be done. I finally made some checklists for things I should do daily/weekly/monthly. So far it's working out ok, but I still think I'm missing things. So what kind of things do you ladies do that work well? For example, I once asked my friend Jessie if the dishes in her dishwasher were dirty, she said they were and that they are always dirty. Then she explained how she runs the dishwasher every night and unloads it every morning. So they're always dirty, and no dirty dishes pile up in the sink. May sound like a simple thing, but it's a very helpful one! So I try to be like Jessie :) and run the dishwasher every night and clear it out every morning. And I know all of you have similar helpful tips, so now - you tell me :)

Kelly's Baby Shower

Saturday was my sister-in-law's baby shower in Pocatello. I had lots of fun putting it together, but I wish I would have had more time to take some pictures. I was running late, and felt silly taking pictures once the girls arrived. So these are the cruddy pictures I did get.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Our other S.I.L, Mickie, couldn't make it, but she sent this super cute diaper cake that she made. I couldn't believe how well she got it to match!!

Photobucket

I wish I would have double this picture Mickie took, before I set up the diaper cake, but of course I was running late. Here is how Mickie set it up. Isn't it SO cute!!

Photobucket

I made a paper mobile that I hung from the ceiling. It turned out really cute! Cuter than it looks in these horrible pictures :)

Photobucket

And we played a few games which I thought I would post, and you all can play along too :)

The first one was like The Price is Right, except I just printed off pictures of items from Bloomingdale's and Saks Fifth Avenue. As I held up the picture I read the description and everyone put down their guesses. Then I revealed the real price for all of them and whoever had the lowest total difference was the winner.
So here are the items - write down your guesses as you go

Ok, now that you have your guesses, here are the answers -
1. Dress - $175
2. Rattle - $50

How did you do? One girl at the shower actually went over by over $500! All the other girls were under by $400-$900.

The other game was my favorite. Or I guess it would have been my favorite if I actually played it and got the candy instead of giving it all away :)

I spread 30 candy bars over a table that all the girls gathered around. As I read out a word or phrase, the girls guessed the candy bar associated with it. Whoever said it first got to keep it!
Here's the list:

dad/husband - Big Hunk
choosing baby's name - whatchamacallit

dirty diaper - milk duds

hospital address - 5th avenue
anesthesiologist - mr goodbar
reason you're late to the hospital - rocky road
epidural - lifesaver
obstetrician - butterfinger

Then whoever got the fewest candy bars was given a pack of nerds.

That was bout all we did over the weekend. Jordan came with me to Pocatello and watched Calin and our two nephews during Kelly's shower. They went to Lowes and built some fun stuff (mirrors I think?) Calin has SO much fun with his cousins now that he can walk around with them! They kept wandering off all over the place! It made me nervous, but at the same time I thought it was the cutest thing watching little Calin walk around with so much confidence with big cousins. They're all just such cute boys!
