I did NOT think Cole would want to potty train for a long time. He has had nothing to do with wearing underwear or going on the toilet and I didn't want to try and have him resist and then take even longer. So I was just accepting the fact that he would be 4 before we started. But on Monday morning, Cole came into my bathroom while I was doing make up and wanted to get dressed so I told him to take off his jammies and his dirty diaper. He pulled everything off then just stood there naked with his clean diaper on the floor in front of him, and kept whining for me to put it on for him. I told him he'd have to wait just a minute or he could do it himself...Ry went and got some underwear out of the drawer and asked Cole if he wanted to wear those instead because they're easier to put on! Cole said no and whinned some more about wanting his diaper so I told him to wait just a minute. Then Ryan pretended to put Cole's underwear on, and Cole did NOT like that! He grabbed them away from Ry so fast and put them on and said something like that they were his underwear, not daddy's! I told him it was ok, but if he wanted to be a big boy and wear his underwear he had to go pee on the potty and not in his pants. He went the ENTIRE day without a single accident! I was sooo impressed! I kept asking him if he still wanted to wear his underwear or put a diaper on and he said he was all done with diapers! I did have to set the timer for every half hour to take him...but I really didn't even have to take him! He'd hear it go off and he'd jump up and run into the bathroom all by himself! I was so excited! I guess once they decide they want to they just do it!
So we're starting day 2 of our unexpected potty training and Cole woke up this morning and first thing he said he wanted to wear underwear again today so he went right to the bathroom! We got the kids all ready to walk Malia to school, and on the way walking to school, Cole stopped and spread his legs and I saw a few drops trickling down his legs! He had just gone right before we left...but I'm sure there will be more to follow! Its all good though, he is still doing such a great job!
When we got back from taking Malia to school, Cole started watching a movie while I was getting my grocery list done...then I hear him crying downstairs. I run down and he is standing in the bathroom with his pants half way down and he'd had an accident and he was so upset! He kept crying 'I had accident!' over and over! It was so sad! I told him it was ok and that I was still so proud of him for trying all by himself...he just couldn't get his pants down fast enough! Poor little guy! It was so sad to see him crying like that! He's so cute and I really am proud of how well he is doing...especially for just starting yesterday! We'll just have to practice the pulling up and down of his pants a little bit more!
Good job my little buddy! You're doing great!
Oh, and on a side note, my sister-in-law Sheri had her baby last night and we are all so excited for her! We got to have her other little guy Mason stay over with us last night while she went into the hospital. I can't wait to go see them and see my new little nephew Jaxon! Congrats Jeff & Sheri!

Camping, cole's birthday, & other randomness
I'm finally getting the pics up from our little camping trip up at Fish Lake a few weeks ago. We went up with my side of the family and the kids always love camping so they had a great time. Me on the other hand, am not the biggest fan of camping, but I'll do it so that my kids can have fun! And yes, I usually end up having fun too...I just hate being so dirty and the yucky smoke smell that permeates every pillow and blanket and sweater...it takes several days to do all the laundry after camping! Just more work than I like to have to do!
Anyway, it was a really nice area actually and was really pretty. It was freezing cold at night, but warmed up pretty good during the day. Cole had a hard time going to sleep in the tent...his first time really tent-camping since he was just little and probably doesn't remember it (he didn't sleep well that time either). But he did finally go to sleep and did pretty well. I think he was just freaked out because my cute little nephew Dante started talking about bears right before bed time...and Cole kinda freaked out and was shaking! We finally convinced him that Tank (my bro/sis-in-law's dog) would scare off any bears...and would protect all of us. He is a big dog and for some reason my kids love him although they've been scared of every other dog they've ever seen. But they love Tank so that seemed to do the trick (luckily!)
They also loved the camp fire and watching things burn in it...and of course throwing wood and rocks and whatever else into the fire. My parents and brother had their 4-wheelers that we went out on too and the kids loved it. And my brother Jon had his little boat that the boys went out fishing on...and later we tried to teach Laura & Amber how to wakeboard. The boat is not meant for wakeboarding, so it was pretty entertaining! And the water was freakin' cold and they were so crazy to get in, but we kept blowing it off and telling them they'd get used to it after they got in and that it wasn't that bad, etc etc. Hee hee! It was freezing!!! I just had to get them in to try it! Sorry girls! Hopefully some day we can go to a warmer lake with a better boat and really teach them! But still, they did great! They both had a couple really close ones where they almost got up...and had only tried like 3 times. So they did awesome!
Anyway, here are some pics from the trip:
We also just celebrated Cole's 3rd birthday! I can't believe my little guy is 3 now! He was so excited for his birthday and kept telling everyone when his birthday was...and would hold up his fingers to show how old he would be! He didn't quite get the concept down though and if someone would ask how hold he was going to be, he'd say 'september 4th!' Or if they asked when his birthday was, he'd answer by holding up 3 fingers and say 'this many'! I guess we'll still have to work on that one!
On Cole's birthday we took the kids to the Living Planet Aquarium. Ry had never been there and the kids love it so they were excited to show him. I could watch the penguins for hours...they are so cute and fun to watch, and the jelly fish and seahorses are my favorites too! Malia is super brave and will touch any animal she can, but Cole is more hesitant and just likes to look. He loves the big snake and the electric eel...and the 'Nemo' fish the most. Right as we were leaving they were starting this show so we stayed to see some other animals that you can't see any other time. They had a maccaw, some huge snake, a giant cockroach, etc etc. The kids thought it was pretty cool though! I tried not to cringe through most of it though! I'm a wuss, I know!
For months Cole has been telling me he wanted a train cake...I do not make cakes! Sure I can throw a box mix together and pop one in the oven, but decorating it is a whole different matter. Malia's birthday cake was the first I'd ever attempted and turned out ok...but this train one looked way more complicated! I kinda copied the idea from my friend Jackie, and then found a few online too and combined all of them to make my own little train. I have to say I was pretty impressed with myself even though I still see a thousand things on it that could have been better! But it was fun to see Cole's face and how excited he was about it so it was worth it!
For his little party we wanted to do a few little kid games and Ry spent over an hour on the computer looking up different games for them to play. I got a whole bunch of balloons for them to try to sit on and pop - cuz that is Cole's favorite thing to do anyway...but then Ry found this game where they tie the balloon to their feet and try to pop other people's balloons but not let theirs get popped. It didn't work out so well though cuz the balloons kept popping outside on the grass so they ended up coming in and sitting on them to pop them! Kids are so funny! Ry also did 'Red-Rover' with them and they all loved it, but some of the younger ones didn't quite get it either! It was so funny to watch them run through each others arms...some would just duck under them, others would totally tackle someone to the ground! It was so funny! Thanks Laura for helping so I could get some pictures! The other game we tried was to let the kids wrap each other up like mummies with toilet paper...Malia and Londyn had fun, but the rest of the kids were younger and the toilet paper kept ripping and they couldn't quite get it to wrap so they were a little confused! But they had fun shredding it all up at then end =)
Oh, and this whole time Cole was being a little turkey and was whinning and pouting and not wanting to participate in any of the games (except red rover...he liked that one!) But he was being such a little stinker! And when it was time to open presents, he only got about half way through, and got up and left the room and didn't want to open any more. Ry did a few by himself and showed Cole to try to get him back in there, but Cole was done. He didn't want anything to do with it! I think it was a little overwhelming with all the kids there and he is so shy anyway I think he just needed to get out! So he ended up opening the rest of his presents that night after everyone was gone! Then he was totally excited about everything he got! He's such a funny kid!
At least he loved his birthday cake, and he had a huge grin when we all sang to him! He is so shy and it's so cute to watch him be the center of attention as he tries to hide his face and his smile because of everyone looking at him! It was cute! Anyway, it was a good day and I think overall it turned out pretty well! I love my little dude and am so excited to see what the next year will bring! Love you Cole!
Finally, here are just some other random cute pictures from recently!

Cole helping daddy mow the lawn...in his underwear! It's the only time he would wear them cuz he doesn't like them yet unfortunately =( But it was a cute picture anyway!

These are my new favorite pictures of Cole! He is just so darn cute just chillin' on the steps. What a handsome little guy!

Malia was doing my hair and putting all these little clips in it...and cole wanted to be included too. So we put one in his hair too! At least he only wanted the blue one =) Ry hates when I do that to him, but it's funny! I can't help it!

We had a bbq with our good friends Nate & Jackie last week and the kids play so good together! We have had their little Ryan and Malia arranged to be married since they were born =) But their other little guy Ethan I think has a crush on her too and it's pretty cute! But anyway, they were having so much fun on their little horses riding around the house. Ethan was actually on with Cole too, but got off right as I took the picture =(

Lake Powell
We had such a great time at Lake Powell with Ryan's family. It is a thousand times better on the houseboat than it was camping! I am so excited that we won't have to do that anymore!
Anyway, it was so much fun and the kids were great! They loved the sea doo's and being pulled on the bumper tubes behind the boat. Malia even tried skiing behind the sea doo and I was so proud of her for trying! She is still pretty little, but she wanted to try so we let her! She held on for maybe 50 yards before she flipped over...She was actually doing really well too and was just kinda sitting on the back of the skii's but didn't ever stand up so she just had all the water splashing her face like crazy and when she finally let go and went under the water she kinda panicked and didn't want to try it again! But that's ok! She did great just to try it! Maybe next year when she's a little bigger and more familiar with the water, etc she will try it again!
Cole took almost the whole trip to get used to the water and he just wanted to play on the beach all day every day. We would ask him if he wanted to go on the sea doo or on the boat or tube or anything and he'd just calmly say 'no'. So we finally just took him and made him go out...then we'd ask him if he had fun or he liked it and he'd say 'yeah'. But if we asked if he wanted to do it again, he'd just say 'no' again! Funny kid! And when we'd try to get him in the water he'd freak out really bad unless you were holding onto him. But by the last day, he was swimming around all by him self and would be the last one in the water. He LOVED to splash people like crazy and thought it was the funniest thing ever! It was great!
Both kids tried the slide on the houseboat and neither of them loved it the first time. But Malia is so brave and tried it again (without me forcing or bribing her this time! hee hee!) and by the end of the week she'd go 8-10 times by herself without us even asking her! She was so cute to watch on it too...she just kinda flailed her arms and legs out and would belly flop everytime (that slide would really shoot ya out of there too!) so it's a good thing she had a life jacket on! She did great! I kinda had to nudge Cole down his first time, then he didn't ever want to try it again the whole trip. Maybe next year!!
We were camped in a perfect area! It had a great beach for the kids and a sweet little inlet next to us that was perfect for swimming and not big enough for anyone else to park there so we didnt' have to have any neighbors that were super close! And we could swim over to the little island and jump off of it, etc. The boys even set up one of their holes of frisbee golf over there ... it was a great spot! We also had great weather and it was pretty much just in the 90's the whole week and a nice breeze to cool down the houseboat, etc. but not any of the huge wind storms! It was a great week and we couldn't have had it any better! Hopefully next year everyone will be able to be there too =)
Here are just a few of the 400+ pictures that I took:

The houseboat and our nice little beach

Malia going off the slide =)

The kids in their way cute towels that Grandma Baumann made for them

Ry trying to do a back flip off the back deck...

A couple of Ry's failed attempts at doing some kind of trick off the slide!

Malia is still super a girly girl and a little princess even while playing in the sand!

Cole swimming in the water with daddy

Malia & Mason on the tubes...I love Malia's face! Then Cole riding with Mason...they were pretty squished in there and I think they both were ready to get out pretty quick!

More bumper tube pictures

Grandma had all the kids give her a thumbs up when they were sitting on their bums and holding on when we started moving on the boat...this is Cole's thumbs up! Cute little man!

One of Ry's many awesome jumps on the wakeboard

One of my little wimpy jumps on the wakeboard...some day maybe I'll be able to jump the wake! :S

Playing at the beach...we totally didn't plan to have Mason and Cole in the same swimming suit, but it was pretty cute when they sat and threw rocks together!
The sea doos...Grandma got some good mileage with malia...she kept asking her to go again and again!

Cole showing me his muscles! He cracks me up! Love this little guy!

Dangerous Territory
Malia: Mom, I have the same hands as you.
Me: You're right...we do have the same hands.
Malia: Does Cole have daddy's hands?
Me: I don't know. They don't look like mine so they probably look more like daddy's. We'll have to check when daddy gets home and see if Cole's hands look like Daddy's.
Malia: How do I have yours but Cole has daddy's?
Me: Well, everyone has part of their daddy and party of their mom in them.
(Malia nods, but looks totally lost so I try to explain it a little bit more...but I didn't think she would really understand the whole DNA thing so I tried to keep it super simple)
Me: When a baby is growing in it's mom's tummy, it gets some things from it's mom and some things from it's dad. Like how my eyes are brown but yours are green...that's from Daddy. but you have my hands. Do you understand?
Malia: (after a minute of thinking it over) How does the baby get in your tummy?
Me: uh....(oh crap, oh crap, oh crap!) a mommy and daddy make the baby together and it grows in the mommy's tummy
Malia: How does the mommy and daddy make the baby?
Me: (let's change the subject as quickly as possible!!) After you get married the mom and dad make a baby by loving each other and then the baby grows in the moms tummy and you go to the hospital to have the doctor help the baby come out. Do you remember when we went to the hospital when Cole was born? You were born at a different hospital than Cole.
Malia: Where is the hospital I was born at?
Me: (yes! Subject change worked!!) It's not there anymore...it was torn down because it was so old and they built a new hospital.
Malia: Can we go see my hospital where I was born?
Me: Well I can show you where it used to be but it's not there anymore. Etc etc...
Holy crap!! I was NOT expecting to have this conversation with my 5 year old!! She is way too young to be asking about the birds and the bees! Luckily she accepted those answers easily, but it was a scary moment for me!
