July 16--
On this beautiful day, our beautiful second son, Lucas, arrived!
Tuesday started out pretty normal....(at this point of the pregnancy, I had been feeling some Braxton Hicks but not a lot and not often) I went to work for my whole day (8:30 am to 2 pm). Josh was at home with Aidan since our babysitter was out of town. As I was leaving, a co-worker said "I hope I get to see you back here again" to which I said "I hope not". (just because I was SO DONE with this pregnancy) He was like "What?!" (this is a co-worker that everyone teases all the time because we love the reactions he has to everything!)
Around 4:30, I started to get some contractions. So I hopped on Google Play and found a contraction timing app. They kept coming, even though they were small and didn't hurt! (It was a weird experience because I didn't get small contractions with Aidan, I went right into the painful ones) Josh about now went into the kitchen and starting making dinner, but I didn't tell him I was having contractions until I was sure that they would keep coming.
When I told him, he asked to let him know how far apart they were coming with the timing of them. I did and they were always so weird......some were 2 minutes apart and some were up to 10 minutes apart. They eventually got to around 2 to 3 minutes apart constantly, so we decided to head over to the hospital. Josh called his mom to let him know what we were doing and she offered to come pick up Aidan over there in case I needed to stay. I called my dad at home, let him know we were headed to the hospital, but that him and my mom (when she got home from picking my sister up) didn't need to come up until I was sure that I was going to be admitted.
We handed over Aidan to his nana and headed up to L&D. They put me in a small room to monitor me for an hour to see if I progressed any. (I had been sitting at 5 cm for about a week at this point)
The monitoring showed that I was indeed having some strong contractions (still not really hurting at this point) so they sent me upstairs to admit me.
I got checked again and I was at about 6 cm. So they called the anesthesiologist to get me an epidural. (I can not imagine having a baby without one...I know some women can brave it, but I just can't.) It took him quite a while to come into my room, having to give one to another mother. When he finally did, we got that put into me and pretty soon I was at 10 cm. The contractions were very strong then. I was so afraid of hurting Josh's hand, I felt I was squeezing the life out of it. He was so awesome to have by my side. He would watch the monitor when I was having the contractions and letting me know when I was coming down from one, that was such a huge help! Helped to reassure me.
My doctor showed up and I started pushing. I'm not sure how long I pushed. The only thing I really remember is someone (turned out to be Josh) saying, "if you want to scream to help you push, just do it." So i did and it felt wonderful :)
Then Lucas arrived at 10:55 pm! They let me hold him skin to skin for a little bit before taking his stats and cleaning him up. He weighed 8 lbs 10 ounces and was 21 inches long! He's now almost 3 days old and such a joy already. Just waiting for him to get over the "gotta sleep all day long except to eat" phase!
