My name is Cátia, but everyone knows me as Kangas because of my love of Australia and kangaroos. I’m a NAATI Certified Translator from English to Portuguese, a Mentor and an entrepreneur. I’ve been running my translation business for almost two decades, and I love what I do.
Four years ago, I started a new chapter in my career. I launched my Online School, Updated Words Learning. It had been a rather challenging chapter, I must say. It started with two courses at Udemy, then changed to Teachable, and now I am moving to Systeme.
I started by offering a course for those starting their careers as translators. But I noticed that one of the major problems in this industry is not choosing the academic path, but the right mindset to create and run a business efficiently. I created my Business Course for Translators, where I could tell my students how to start their business and position themselves in the market. Now I have a Full Mentoring Program, where students can access my course, and weekly meetings, webinars and masterclasses. I want to fill this industry with confident entrepreneurs, not miserable freelancers.
Last year, I was nominated Deputy of the AUSIT Portuguese Language Division. This is another step in my desire to help others and make a mark in this industry. Together with a fellow colleague, we have been working to promote great standards, cooperation between peers and professional development. It has been an enriching experience for me, as I have had the opportunity to meet other peers and have a deeper understanding of our industry.
Strong-minded since a very young age, I’ve never conformed to following others; I questioned them, and I dared to make my own rules. I don’t do things because someone or the establishment believes they should be done that way; I use my brain and do things the way I think is best for myself and others. I’m proudly agnostic because I’ve seen bad enough in all religions to not believe in any of them. I believe in respect, I believe in good manners, I believe in equality, I believe education is your best “weapon” against everything, and I believe in a fair go for everyone.
I’ve started this blog as a way of expressing my deepest thoughts and feelings. I love writing and discussing different topics, so this is a good way to have a good discussion.
