Skyscraper Collection

Is there a type of exercise that you know is great for you, but you just don’t like doing very much?  For me, that type of exercise is climbing stairs.  I take the stairs in real life as often as I can, but it takes some serious effort and mental rallying to get on the StairMaster at the gym.  So I created a way I can celebrate my StairMaster workouts and encourage me to hop on the StairMaster again:  I started a skyscraper collection.

Here’s how it works:  Every time I use the StairMaster, I note, at the end of the workout, how many floors I climbed.  Then, with the help of the internet, I find a skyscraper somewhere on the planet with an equivalent number of floors.  Just finding pictures of these buildings, often the tallest ones in their city or country, are hugely inspirational – they’re tall!  And, in my own way, I climbed them!  I keep a chart of all the skyscrapers in my collection (which you’ll see below).  Here are just some of the skyscrapers I’ve climbed:Image

MY SKYSCRAPER CHART:

(Organized by number of floors, with the tallest building on top.  You can click on any building’s name to read the blog post about that workout – most of them include a little information about the skyscraper as well!)

  • Aon Center, Los Angeles, CA (63 stories, climbed 3/31/12 – though not the tallest, this building’s at the top of the list because I climbed it for real, from sidewalk to roof, during a charity stair climb. Read the full recap and see photos here.)
  • Burj Khalifa, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (163 stories, climbed 5/5/12 – This climb was a fundraiser that brought in over $1,600 for Whaley Children’s Center in Flint, Michigan. I made a 3-minute video of the event – watch it here.)

CUMULATIVE STATS:

  • Number of buildings in my collection: 46
  • Number of US States represented: 15 + District of Columbia (New York, Illinois, Washington, Texas, Michigan, California, Iowa, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina)
  • Number of countries represented: 18 (USA, China, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Germany, Canada, Spain, Brazil, United Arab Emirates, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Africa, Chile, Kuwait)
  • Number of continents represented: 6 (North America, South America, Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa)
  • Total number of stories climbed: 3,247
  • Average number of stories per workout: 75.5

Keep checking back… because this is a chart that I’ll keep adding to!

KEEP IT UP, DAVID!

I really love this idea! I struggle with finding motivation to keep going on the StairMaster as well. This is such a fun way to push yourself. I hope you don’t mind me borrowing your idea. Thanks!

  3. Looks great David! Very impressive and great idea to push yourself. I should think about doing that myself as it is easy to call it a workout if you don’t have a goal. Check out the one in Dubai! I forget the height but I think it’s about 3/4 a mile high. Curious if ANYONE’s ever climbed that one yet. Could be a weekend trip. =)

Yeah, the Burj Khalifa has, between habitable floors and maintenance levels, 209 stories. YIKES! More than double the highest building in my collection. Definitely something to work towards!
