UFO Week Results: 1st October – 7th October

UFO Week

I didn’t get as far as I’d like to have done this UFO week, mostly due to the fact that I frogged all the work I had done on the pattern I had originally chosen as I got heartily fed up of it (the chart wasn’t symmetrical and had loads of errors in it and I had several frogging sessions on it even prior to pulling it all out!), and then chose a different design and go ahead with that.

I’m very pleased with how its looking so far though and as the design is so completely different from the one I’ve completed for the other side (Blackwork Cherry Blossoms), my Grom can display whichever side she fancies depending on her mood!

This is where I’m up to. As it’s intended as a Christmas gift, I’ll be continuing with this design and then assembling the cushion.06. Design 2 (2nd choice design) progress

Love and Luck Wedding Sampler (also UFO Week Update)

06. Completed

Project: Love and Luck Wedding Sampler
Started: 29.04.09
Finished: 01.09.09

Design: Love and Luck Wedding Sampler by The Historical Sampler Company (from Cross Stitcher Magazine May 2009)
Materials: Pale lilac 16-count Aida; Anchor flosses; cream pearl seed beads

This project has taken me quite a while to complete as I kept going off the design and then it grew on me again later on and I’d come back to it. This time, as a result of resolving to finish it during UFO week, I really put the pressure on and added the final seed bead tonight (just as well, really, as the wedding is this weekend!). It won’t be framed in time for the wedding, but it most certainly will be by the time the happy couple return from their honeymoon.

I changed the original design a tiny bit by replacing the top and bottom edges of the horse shoe border with a quote from the Apache Wedding Prayer, which I will be reading at the wedding, just to make it a little more personal. It reads “Now you are two people with only one life before you.”

UFO Week: 1 September – 7th September

UFO Week

It’s that time again – time to drag out an unfinished project that’s idling and stitch it for a week! I’m definitely going to finish the wedding sampler for my friend this time round, as I only have a tiny bit of stitching to do and it’s all done. The wedding is on Saturday 5th September, so it’ll be stitched in time for that, but not framed. Ah well, I can always get it framed for when they return from their honeymoon!

Here’s where I’m up to at the moment (forgive the poor picture quality – the flash on my phone didn’t go off!):

05. Progress

I have the rest of the horseshoes to do down the left side of the border and also one either side of each line of text (at the top and bottom of the border); a bunch of small random hearts in the centre heart; and the beading at the centre of each green square cluster. So, not an awful lot left to do on this – despite having a busy week ahead, I expect to be finished within a couple of days… Fingers crossed!

Beside the Sea

Little boat sampler

Project: Beside the Sea
Started: 16.08.09
Finished: 19.08.09
Design: Freebie kit on Cross Stitcher Magazine (October 2009 issue)
Materials: White 14-count Aida; Anchor flosses; seaside charms

I just couldn’t resist stitching this lovely little freebie kit for my baby son’s room. I added his name to the side of the boat, just to make it a little bit more personalised. The seaside charms are so cute and the colours so soft that they’ll look perfect in Xander’s nursery. I can hardly wait to find the perfect frame for it!

Freebie Friday!

Freebie Friday

Papillon logo

It’s Friday again – and that means another pointer to some more fabulous freebies! This week I thought I’s send you all in the direction of Papillon Creations, whose sumptious sampler designs are incredibly inspiring and are, by all accounts, a delight to stitch as well as wonderful to look at when completed!

One of my favourite freebies from this site is Love Letters – a delightful little companion piece to the larger Three Little Words sampler (which is not free, but is also available from the site). It’s so gorgeous that I may well have to keep this one as a gift to myself, rather than stitching it for someone else!

Be sure to sign up to the newsletter as you get access to more freebies through that too!

Subversive Sampler

02. Finished

Project: Subversive Sampler
Started: 28.06.09
Finished: 30.06.09

Design: Short and Sweet by Maria Diaz (from Cross Stitcher Magazine April 2009)
Materials: 28-count Jobelan in grey, various DMC flosses, Gutermann seed beads in cream

As a fan of samplers anyway, I couldn’t resist this modern twist on a traditional design – the subversive sampler! I changed the colour scheme slightly from the magazine recommendations, using flosses that I had to hand and that complemented each other and the fabric well, and added a few cream seed beads in the border. The idea was to make it look pretty and delicate till you realise the lettering spells “Bothered”, which makes it a little punchier. I think this one might go on my desk at work as my colleagues have a sense of humour and I return to work after ten months of maternity leave in another two weeks!

Snips and Snails Sampler

Image

Project: Snips and Snails Sampler
Started: 26.06.09
Finished: 27.06.09

I happened upon this tiny birth sampler whilst browsing the Sew and So website and couldn’t resist it. The design is by Carolyn Meacham and the kit comes complete with plenty of flosses to complete the project (although it doesn’t specify, I believe the threads to be DMC). The framed size is just 6.5 inches by 7 inches, but I think this simple sampler is just so charming! It’s an incredibly quick stitch and would be a lovely gift for anyone who has a friend with a baby boy – it could even be stitched last minute and given to the proud parents very soon afterwards!

Stash Attack!

Stash!

Yes, I’ve been ordering stash again – don’t tell my hubby or he’ll go spare! I’m going to have to hide all my new stuff as it arrives so he doesn’t burst a blood vessel…

So, here’s what I’ve been ordering (not yet arrived, but it’ll all start coming in the next couple of days):

  • DMC Stranded Cotton Gift Box with 30 skeins of floss
  • Size 26 and 28 Petites Cross Stitch Needles
  • A bunch of DMC flosses for forthcoming and current WiPs
  • Snips and Snails Charmer cross stitch kit by Serendipity
  • Aircraft-firendly thread cutter
  • Six fat quarters of 28-count Jobelan – one in each colour as follows – grey, moss green, honeysuckle pink, forget-me-not blue, buttermilk, and tan

I’m going to have a fantastic time allocating materials to projects and sorting flosses when they get here. I can hardly wait to get my mitts on it all!

WiP Updates

I have a whole bunch of works in progress at the moment, so I thought I’d update them all at once:

Wedding Sampler:
I haven’t got much further with this, but as the deadline is at the start of  September, I know I have plenty of time to complete it.

Bold Blooms:
This little freebie kit is a lot of fun to stitch. There aren’t many different colours in it and the effect of depth and perspective is created by using only one strand for distance and two strands for close up. I think it will look very pretty when completed.

Stitching Friends SAL Exchange:
This is a sitch-along exchange I’m doing with my new friends at The Cross Stitch Forum. The deadline is 1st September, so again, I have plenty of time to complete this one.

Rainbow Cats Bookmark:
This is a gift I’m working on for a friend who is always very kind to everyone and deserves a little treat. She loves books and cats, so I thought I’d combine her two loves on this bookmark which is a design by Carla-Jane of Raevyn Designs.

Dragon Silhouette:
I’ve designed this piece myself for an arts and crafts competition on the Crafts and Creatures forum. The deadline is the end of the month, so this is the one I’m doing most work on at the moment!

Three WiPs and a Forthcoming Project

ImageImageImageImage

Left to right: Wedding sampler, cube, Bold Blooms and Tudor Queen Mottoes overview

The three main projects I have on the go at the moment are a wedding sampler, a stuffed cube toy and a free magazine kit.

The wedding sampler is for my friends, Kerry and Stu, who are getting married in September this year. I’m Chief Bridesmaid and will be reading at the wedding, so the inner border will be different from the horseshoe border on the chart – I’ll be replacing them with a few lines from the reading instead, just to make it extra personal. I’m quite pleased with my progress on this project and I think it will look lovely when it’s finished.

The stuffed cube toy is for my baby son who is almost eight months old now. Each face of the cube will feature a letter from his name (quite fortunately, their are six letters in his first name – Xander!) and I’ll put a few bells inside with the stuffing.

The freebie kit, called Bold Blooms, is from Cross Stitcher magazine. I’ve only just started this one, so I haven’t done very much of it yet, which is why I’ve popped the picture card next to my work in the photo, so you can see what it will look like when it’s finished.

The forthcoming project (which I’ll be starting after I’ve finished the cube and Bold Blooms kit) is a sampler of four Tudor Queens’ Mottoes, which I’m stitching as a mock-up for the designer through The Corss Stitch Forum, Carla-Jane of Raevyn Designs. I’ll be experimenting with metallic thread for the first time on this project, so I’m quite excited about it!
