I think I may have figured out how to work around the issues I have been having with Comcast. Sometime about 2 weeks ago Comcast IPV6 stopped working, but their network was still connecting as if it was. If I turn off IPV6 on my end, my backup starts working again. The python library that duplicity uses to access Google storage no longer tries to access it via IPV6. Rather it uses IPV4 and it works.
Huzzah!
Next, set aside time to deal with Comcast support so IPV6 can work.

2019-2020 HB 1110
Jan. 10th, 2020 06:38 pmMy letter to my 43rd district legislators regarding House Bill 1110, which Governor Inslee is touting as bold legislation that will reduce our carbon emissions in Washington state. What it does is mandate that we figure out a way to regulate less carbon out of the same amount of gasoline.
Hello 43rd legislators!
I do not oppose this bill, but I am concerned that it is insufficient in the face of our climate crisis. The proven way to reduce carbon in our transportation sector is to use less carbon. This bill says that regulating fuel standards will automagically make us emit less carbon for the same amount of fuel. Essentially, it's trying to make it so we don't have to sacrifice or change our transportation behavior and yet we will still get the needed results! And maybe we can! But it seems pretty far out.
So I encourage you to introduce bills that will find ways to directly reduce the use of gasoline and diesel.
Thank you,
Philip Weiss

Biopsy Tuesday
Sep. 25th, 2019 05:34 pmMonday the oncologist called. She talked to a testicular cancer specialist (it's rare, so testicular cancer oncologists are rare) who recommended that, rather than do a CT scan in three months, I should get my lymph node(s) biopsied. So that's what I will be doing Tuesday. 7 am check-in. Procedure at 8 am. 2 hours sedated. Then 1-2 hours recovery at Group Health before they discharge me.
Kim will be accompanying me there. Heather will be picking me up.
I'd kind of rather just take the bus home, but that's not allowed. I also don't know how long it will take before the biopsy test results will be done.

As I posted on the Facebook yesterday, my three year cancer followup revealed three enlarged lymph nodes. The blood test did not show any elevated cancer markers, so I don't have to start chemo right away. Instead, my surveillance regimen is CT scans every three months for the foreseeable future. First of those in December. If something looks worrying then or in subsequent scans, *then* I start chemo.
Friends on facebook have taken the positive blood results as "great news" and have mostly reacted as if I'm going to be okay. Which, maybe I am. But I don't feel the weight lifted yet. The CT scans are very unfun, and I've got a bad feeling about the results. It feels like I've only put off the chemo for 3 or 6 months.
I don't want to be Eeyoring myself, but cancer is a thing.

FGS convention
Mar. 5th, 2019 12:04 pmThere's a genealogy convention in May that I want to go to, but I can't talk myself into pulling the trigger. This is the same thing that I did from 2010-2013 when I didn't have an earned income. I can't bring myself to spend money that I have on things I want to do, because what if I need that money when I am 80. I don't have kids to take care of me then.
Housity house house
Feb. 2nd, 2019 10:59 amI'm going to go to Tacoma and view a house during their open house tomorrow. Pictures look nice and it's $300K, which is $100K+ less than my condo. I don't know if I'm ready to pull the trigger, but starting to view houses may get me off my "maybe someday" thing.
As I'm getting older, being in proximity to my social circle is becoming less important. I'm just not going to be going out that many days a week.
What is important though is being able drive less. The house I'll be looking at is a 0.9 mile walk from the nearest grocery. It's closer to a grocery than where I am now, but still not close. However, it may be safer to ride a bike in Tacoma. My neighborhood has no bike infrastructure and lots of aggressive drivers. Eastlake is averaging about 10 car to bike collisions every year.

The Good Place, S3
Jan. 28th, 2019 11:53 amI watched the Season 3 final episode last night. I wasn't as whelmed as I thought I would be given people's reactions on Twitter.
The characters continue to seem interesting, and the world-building is still fun. It also is nice that a shorter TV show is building a season-long and series-long story arc. I remember when very few shows did that at all back in the 80s and 90s. It started to become a thing with dramas in the 2000s, and now maybe we'll see it with shorter comedies and whatnot. Gone are the days of the Brady Bunch where everything is the same for much of a show.

I went to an SDOT organized workshop on parking mitigation strategies for when Roosevelt RapidRide coms to Eastlake today. It was a shitshow of NIMBY attempts to make comments that would roll back the plans for a protected bike lane and higher capacity buses.
The thing is, the bike and transit community won't show up to these. I've been at meetings on this project organized by bike advocates that had 25-30 people attend, but the ones where the city actually gets feedback? It's me and 2-3 other people.
We get the heat death of the planet that we deserve.

First book finished in 2019 was Unearthed in audio book format. It's YA, which I chose specifically because I've found that the structure of YA tends to work well with my brain in audio book format. It's billed as Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft in space. I didn't know the elevator pitch when I grabbed it. Mostly picked it to try out something by a female author I hadn't read before.
And... while its okay, it didn't blow me away. There were a lot of seeming holes in the plot that turned out not to be. More like someone who knows the tropes and has the benefit of perspective seeing the things that didn't make sense before the characters did. Once I realized the authors were doing that, I was able to enjoy the story.
What I really didn't enjoy was the interminable "does he like me"/"does he hate me", "does she like me"/"does she hate me" inner dialogue from the two main characters. They are teens, so it's not unreasonable, but good goddamn was it tedious to me. I hope the two of them have finally gotten past that for the sequel.
Of note, there is a cliffhanger at the end leading to the second book.

Volunteer Park Conservatory
Jan. 3rd, 2019 07:08 pmSince admission is free for a couple months, I went up to the Volunteer Park Conservatory this afternoon. I don't think I've been in there before but I had a sense of deja vu, so perhaps I have. I was fascinated by the plants with repetitive patterns and took a bunch of photos of those for use as possible desktop wallpapers if they turned out.
Tonight I am spending an evening with a box of sugar cookies from QFC.

2019 goals
Dec. 31st, 2018 09:29 pm- Read 40 books, 4 more than 2018.
- Eat at one new or forgotten restaurant every week. Each must be in a different neighborhood (by a fuzzy definition of neighborhood).
- Complete 24 proof summaries or proof statements for an ancestor.
- Stay off Facebook except for events, messenger, and Parentheses Genealogy. Unfollow everyone except the genealogy stuff.
- Try out Instagram stories and post on Dreamwidth when the urge to Facebook hits.
