Kristan was born and raised in Houston, TX, with an American father and Taiwanese mother. Growing up, she was always either entertaining herself with stories, or else helping out at her parents’ small business, which was a mix of architectural firm, printshop, and newspaper office. Now she is based in Cincinnati, OH, with her husband and two children — although for the next few years, their family is on temporary assignment in Guangzhou, China.
Kristan studied creative writing at Carnegie Mellon University, and later attended the Kenyon Review Writers Workshop. She writes both fiction and nonfiction with a focus on feminist, multicultural stories. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Switchback, and the Citron Review, among others, and is forthcoming from Hunger Mountain. She is currently writing a Young Adult novel, and seeking new representation due to her beloved literary agent’s unexpected retirement.
