Yes I didn't finish it. I thought it was getting too pseud, like nothing was gonna be explained in terms of real physics but magic. After thinking a bit about AI I realized all that schizo soykaf happening in the anime may as well happen in the real world, then I remembered the lisp code lain was writing in some episode and thought it wasn't so stupid after all. But overall felt that it was meant to someone who already knew the source material, it's weird to think about it making sense on the first watch

I purposefully didn't watch the last layer to keep the story close to my heart

reagrds, a *baka*-like person

Also, I generate funny ideas for hypothetical Season 2 that could be a fine addition to Half-Life 3

1. People were connected, but only via... via right hemispheres of their brains - the hemisphere that's "shut" and has its own personality and consciousness, acrding to Roger Penrose's "Emperor's New Mind"

2. The feeling of not feeling a thing expressed with a guy in a hotel room (while his apartment is being de-bugged as in insecticided)

3. a person becoming a "yukkuri soykafteite ne" creature as a nod to Touhou Project?

4. SPINES ARE IMPORTANT TOO

Not him, but - I only watched SEL's final episode yesterday (dubbed in my native language, HD) - judging by 2 voices (moe-sounding vs stark-sounding), I got a following feeling:
There's a whole new can of worms known to us as "parallel universes".

See, the "Serial Experiemnts Lain" videogame is not "Serial Experiemnts Lain" anime yet they're supposed to add one to another.
The "Close this world. [Open the nExt]." Lain wanted to befriend another Lain, the

>>764
>does lain have autism?
parallel universe Lain.
Didn't really work.
That's why in the very final scene of 13th layer - where Lain breaks the 4th wall for a moment - you get to see Lain drawn in a different style...

...oh, and Wired.Lain wears light blue dress similar to one found in Dc1029 videofile of the game, not that iconic night gown. It's hard to see in TV verson or VHS version, by my HD variant had this hard-to-notice difference.

Huh. Now, the first 2-3 episodes (investigating Chisa's case and then getting caught into another similar case) reminded me of a certain classic 1969 anime which had disappearances of people as one of the build-ups of the plot

SEL is a very nice anime, however I feel as though I miss many of the details and underlying meanings in the layers.

Lain is an idea? A representation of the interconnectedness of humanity through technological means? The wishes/dreams/legends of humanity as a whole manifesting itself in 'physical' form? With the lain we're introduced to being a physical connection to the real(?) world? Or is there only one lain, or are there none at all?

Please use this thread to discuss the metaphorical meanings and messages lain is trying to convey. It would be nice to hear your thoughts, lain.

Frankly, SEL has a bunch of quirks found in Fight Club:

1. exploded house
2. crazy person(a) who promotes something destructive and crazy turns out to be main character's hidden personality
3. HINTS TO RUINED SLEEP. In lyr2 and alike, you can see lain's room is not really accomodated for a regular human's heathy sleepo, with street light shining into room.

Aside from that: besides, the layer on K.I.D.S. project smells like a cyberpunk take on Kabba the sacred black square stone.

>2. crazy person(a) who promotes something destructive and crazy turns out to be main character's hidden personality

I mean, lyr13 lain in cyan dress looks like *chunnibyou* personality representation - aside from Ego, Superego and Id triad many fans know about.

>>

 No.1369

Personally, I got the feeling we got this:

* Not-so-haxxor girl named lain decided to crack a case of disappearance of Chisa Yomoda - due to not having enough friends to go and chill out in flashy 1998 Shibuya, despite having the location and financial parts covered.
* Her dad knows so much about computers!
* Oh, top of the line computer!
* *gets a nice computer and a bunch of books related to the idea to crack the case like a shonen detective*
*hacking in progress*
*got attacked by Eiri's social engineering tricks*
*hacking in progress*
Layer 08: Rumors: turns out, lain has this very teen stuff found in "Internet hate machine" anons
*social engineering in progress*
*hacking in progress*
*hacking in progress*
*hacking in progress*
All of that resulted in hacking the entire planet (the entire universe, even?)

Having the entire planet hacked, lain has to choose between having everything connected into one entity (very lonely) or dealing with the fact all people are a bit different.

The lyr13 story implies lain could have hacked herself into Alice's life as a new student, but...

It's a reminder the people who are cold enough to build/deploy destriuctive weapons are people who had been in dire need of love as in "human warmth", but got a [ERROR 404: LOVE NOT FOUND] instead.

Oh and by the way. The Knights tried some kind of "love bombardment" on Lain - a tactic used by sects.
Indoctrination into a sect-like cult of t3h 1337 h4xx0rz. Scary, actually.

Don't worry about it. You're not exactly the first person to understand SEL on the first viewing.

Honestly, I can kind of relate to wishing to have discovered the show as a teenager as well, but then you have to ask other questions, questions like "would it have actually made that much of an impact on me had I watched it the whole way through?" Life is so full of weird and winding paths, and past a certain point there's no use in contemplating all the other ways it could have gone without making yourself feel worse.

I don't know your life, nor do I really want to, but whatever happened when you were 14, I really don't think that Lain had anything to do with it, or that watching the show would do anything directly to change it. Whatever you're going through, just do your best to step back and try to ground yourself. All will be well.

Except... I had been watching *some pieces* of SEL as a teen (lur07, that Nezumi guy in VR headset smiling like some xbox360 kid and such) but never got to watch the whole series despite being able to *find someone to borrow SEL from* and despite being acquainted to Serial Experiments Lain.

That the thing. There was one particular scene that I *really* wish I had seen back then. I could have learned something really important from it.

But you're right, theres no need to cry over every mistake. I could have failed in a similar fasion months later over something else, after all.

she obviously thinks the guy who calls himself God isn't God cause when he said "more evolved humans have rights to greater abilities" she said "who gave you those rights" and outright said he's not God. but later on there are two lains talking, and one said "that's right, lain is God!" but the seemingly real lain says "no, you're wrong!". who is right? I've always seen the shows position on God being similar to the abrahamic monotheistic God, but upon watching again recently the ending might be able to be be interpreted as lain becoming a god.

If we take the KIDS program literally then there are psychic powers at work already, before the wired was ever created. They're just too dilute to do much in the real world. Connecting people through the wired allows the psychic strength of millions of people to be focused on a single objective, bending reality.
Best guess would be this is a pantheistic holographic universe. Creation is God sharding Himself to produce a multitude of low res images. Reconnecting shards increases resolution. Natural selection can get you as far as a brain (lots of cells interconnected to exchange information), but then brains invent technology to connect to each other - a second Cambrian explosion.
The resulting being would be to humanity as individual humans are to single-celled organisms. Not actually God, but a much clearer image of Him.

>>

this is a good post, i like this interpretation a lot; the real question that raises, though, is something like "is humanity destined to one day evolve into lain?" if lain could reset the universe could humanity one day harness it?

>>

 No.1169

>>1168
Taking the holographic perspective I think humanity already is Lain, and Lain is the collective humanity. Lain appears as a shy teenage girl instead of an exalted superbeing, because on the cosmic timescale that's what humanity is. Eiri only appears godlike because he is the protocol for the wired and therefore has access to all the cheat codes (literally godmode). Lain is still more powerful in spite of appearances, because she IS the wired itself and can therefore draw upon all the minds connected to it the way an individual's ego function draws upon neurons for processing information.
Eiri thus dies with Protocol 7 because that's all he ever was. Lain can survive as long as there is a wired, regardless of what protocol it is running on (although higher bandwidth and usage will make her more powerful). There is a giga-schizo theory in dark corners of the internet that this happened IRL and that's why IPv7 was deprecated - Lain reset the universe for us to avoid a bad outcome. In any case she is much more than a specific technology, but rather the collective consciousness driving the technology in order to realise itself.
Humanity could harness the universe if it develops a protocol that allows Lain to grow and develop without any individual trying to control her for their own ends. That would mean a free unregulated internet for all with surplus bandwidth to accommodate any use case. Realistically that does mean there would also be a dark side to it, hence evil Lain trolls people and violates their privacy. The collective (Lain) would have to integrate its dark side (evil Lain) to reach the next phase of evolution.

Again, got blocked from remebering what the song was about. I remeber *wading* throung a long video that about three streamers in one.

I am not sure what it was about, as *this* dream got interrupted with another dream - me travelling from my old apartment to my new apartment picking up a kitten on my way to my home. Probably 2000s too.

The kitty had a heterochromia, and was all cute and fluffy. Guess I should check out that kitty I actually picked up once... only to donate this kitty to my neighbour.

found a few of those obscure channels that have resurrected the Nightcore scene of the 2000s, complete with an affinity for 2000s style hyper-detailed big-eyed anime artwork for each thumbnail (contemporary for the time) and speeding up trance music from past familiar names as DJ Splash, Basshunter, Cascada, Tune-Up, etc. I remembered some of the anime pictures in these new channels' videos were used as wallpapers back in the day. The whole recreation is so accurate. It's honestly nostalgic for me and impressive how well people can, from memory and experience, recreate an era and its atmosphere/aesthetic/feel or whatever word is most appropriate to describe the collection of cultural expression with its accompanying motifs and tropes.

Here are the channels I found, there's more, but it's hard to find them, but thankfully it feels like new ones are sprouting up every month:

Recently I don't see lain itself getting that much popular.
Just the normal turn around of a new generation discovering a beloved anime.
Instead I see a huge boost for the band boa and their song duvet, which has gotten quite the push through tiktok.
There will always exist some overlap between the two, but I don't see it that critically.
The less serious and more silly audience that comes to the anime might be better, compared to some very stick up their ass people that exist.
I'd rather see things evolve instead of forever being frozen in time.
