what happened to the cartoons?- long rant

So it is early on a Saturday morning, and instead of sleeping in like a normal person who goes to bed at midnight and is on vacation (this normal person is Em), I have pretty much been awake all morning... and I can not make myself go back to sleep.
so here is how it happened. I have been pretty congested in my chest ever since we landed in Arizona. In fact, as we stepped out of the airport into the parking garage, I started to feel like my throat was dry and it was a little hard to get my lungs all the way filled. I didn't take much notice of it at the time, probably because I was so excited to be home in this brown land that we live in, but in retrospect I see that that is the first place that my breathing was troubled. Gracie had a hard time falling asleep that night(Wednesday) and so I stayed up with her for a while. but it was really hard for me to fall asleep because I could not get comfortable and my breathing was weird. Thursday night was much the same thing, except that I did not try to fall asleep until after one o'clock, because that is when Emi came home. Gracie woke up in the middle of the night again for about two hours and after I figured out she is still teething, I got her to go back to sleep and I figured out that I could no longer speak in a normal voice (because of the congestion, I feel like I have lost my voice, but my throat doesn't hurt or anything, and I don't have a cough, but I can hack up some nasty goo if I want to clear my throat. Last night we had a dinner with some old friends from Mesa High, and although I didn't talk a whole lot, I really enjoyed myself and wish I could have talked more, we were home at around 8:00. We went to bed around11:00, and I couldn't get comfortable for almost an hour and then Grace woke up and Then I fell asleep until three, at which point I tried everything that I could think of to try and clear my lungs so I could feel like I could breath ( my chief complaint) and go back to sleep. I finally put Vick's Vaporub on my neck, and I was comfortable breathing almost immediately and I dozed for a while after that until 5 when my mind woke up the rest of my body and I discovered that there is nothing good on TV for early morning cartoons anymore. Kids these days don't know what they are missing. Remember GI Joe and He-man and Thundercats? I would wake up early every Saturday to watch those cartoons and there wasn't even anything entertaining on today at all.
Well, Gracie woke up about 45 minutes ago, and wants my complete attention so I will finish up with a sleep tally for the last seven days
Saturday night- 7 hours
Sunday night - 4 hours
Monday night- 5 hours
Tuesday night- 6 hours
Wednesday night-5 hours
Thursday night- 5 hours
Friday night- maybe 4 hours
total 38 hours- and I am on vacation!
my normal total=between 49 and 63, so if I seem agitated or irrational, it is not you, it is me. So please be understanding.

An end to the beginning

ImageLance with other 1st quarter buddies sporting "handlebars" for finals week. I don't have the slightest idea where they came up with it (LANCE). Sorry to the other wives who had to put up with it. And I really wish Lance had kept his hat on! :)

Time for the HAPPY DANCE!!! Congrats to Lance who finished his 1st quarter of chiro school, only 12 more to go!! It's been a tough quarter, and these last few weeks were even worse. Lance was doing very little other than eating, and studying (and helping with Gracie in all of the craziness), and maybe fitting in a little sleep. I'm so proud of you!

tons o fog

First of all whoever told it it never snows where we live in Portland LIED! I know it's supposed to rain a lot but JEEZ!! It's been raining since last Friday! With the exception of it SNOWING all day Saturday! Today was weird, a great dense fog. We get a lot of fog from the gorge, but every once in a while it's a doozy! I took these on my way to the gym, probably not the safest thing to do but I was being careful. :)

Holiday Gala

Saturday night we got to go on a date!! WAAA HOO!! It seems like the dating days are becoming a thing of the past with our recent school schedule. The school hosted a Holiday Gala (by the way no one could decide of you say it GAH-LUH, or GAY-LUH, but dictionary.com says it's either) and we were lucky enough to find a babysitter (Thanks Tiff!). It was a formal affair, held in a ballroom in downtown Portland, including dinner and dancing. We had a great time with our good buddies here!

Thanks to all the Ladies who attended Girls Night (it was my turn to host)! And for all of our fam who has been begging for pics of our apartment, you can thank Chrystal for appeasing you. I hope everyone enjoyed the scum, ornament exchange, and homemade cinnamon rolls!

Most of the girls (some had to leave early or couldn't make it) Can you believe I had this many people in our tiny apartment??

Back to Business

I have to say, it's good to be back "home". I wasn't sure if Portland felt like home, but when I was greeted by my fabulous hubby AT THE AIRPORT (he was supposed to be in class), AND WITH FLOWERS, I was quickly reminded this is our home. I was very surprised to feel happy at getting back to routine life. I was laughing while I was running at the gym! Thanks to Lance I came home to a sparkling clean home with freshly cleaned toilets (growing up with 3 brothers, I made Lance agree this was his "job" BEFORE I agreed to marry him). I love you, love you, love you! With all of the busyness at home I just ignored how much I missed my Lance! I just wanted you to know how much I love and appreciate you!

Welcome Home Uncle Logan!

Anxiously awaiting the arrival...

He's here!

We've had such a fun, family filled week(end)! Logan came home from a mission on Wednesday, which calls for a family gathering (and his friends too). Thursday Gracie and I traveled between 3 different sides of our family to celebrate "Thanks". Then on Sunday, Logan reported to the ward, and again another family gathering. My poor mother! Lots of company and fun, but it was nice when everyone left and it was just our family again. It's so fun to have Logan around again, and just nice to be with ALL of my brothers. I think it's been over 3 years since we were all together and even though I had to endure a bit of teasing, I enjoyed every minute of it.

Annual Girls Day

(most of this is intended for Lance...sorry everyone else)

Each year the Bowler girls get together before Thanksgiving for a lunch and a shopping trip. We shopped at Kierland and had luch at the Cheesecake Factory--YUM! I was so excited to be able to be down for our girls day, I really look forward to it every year. This year was fun because a few of the younger girls joined us (Gracie too!).

From the Journal Jar- Sounds

So the Journal Jar challenge is sounds that I love. Em asked me what sounds I loved last night before we went to bed and a few things came to mind immediately, but over the past 24 hours I have been thinking about it more and more, and have come up with a few more. It was a weird experience because almost all day I was more aware of the sounds that I was hearing and I would periodically ask myself if I loved this sound or that sound and why. It was very revealing for me to perform this self-reflection and this is what I came up with.

The first one that I came up with, almost off the bat goes like this " da-DAaH, da da da da duuhh, duh duh dunna dunna dun - from Image

I just love this show. It is smart and funny, and is always entertaining. Even Emi loves it now, though she did not think it was funny for the longest time ( but Michael Scott wore her down)

I also immediately thought of my Gracie and the sound that I love to here her make. It is of course her laugh, but not just any laugh or giggle that she lets out. I am talking about her belly chuckle, the one that she doesn't do very often, but when she does it is hilarious. This is a deeper laugh that she lets out in spurts and has to work up to, and it comes from her belly(obviously), she can't breath during it and has to take a huge breath afterward, before she launches into it again. I tried all day to make her do it, just to hear it, and during bath time right before bed she finally settled in for a good chuckle session. I loved it.

Image

There are a couple sounds that Em makes that I enjoy - her small voice, every once in a while in her sleep she snorts, when she is mad at me she does this whole slow exhale thing that I fear and strangely love at the same time. I love to here her play the piano and I love to hear her singing( especially Primary songs) and here is the one that I love the most...her voice when she speaks Spanish. Maybe it is because Spanish class is where I first fell in love with the girl across the room with the dazzling smile or simply the voice change that goes on, but hearing her speak Spanish is one of the best sounds in the world for me. I try to make her learn more words, but it just cracks me up every time. I think I embarrass her when I drop everything to listen to her when she starts to speak it, but I really enjoy it and treasure every syllable that leaves her sweet mouth

.Image

I am now going to make a laundry or grocery- however you choose to look at it- list of the rest of the sounds that I love. (or at least the ones that I can think of)

Michael Jackson - music not the person or his high-pitched speaking voice

theme song for Friends - I'll be there for you-ou

Theme song for "Saved By the Bell" - when the teacher pops a test....

my parents variable doorbell.

Cubans - people not the cigar - a que hora mataron la Lola?

How Will and Carter say my name- or used to

Gracie's impression of an elephant

Dr. O cursing in class- after sitting in one room all day, it is funny.

Dance Radio stations- movin 97.5 and movin 107.5

Ace of Base

Line dance songs - they remind me of stake dances and those were fun. the macarena, cottoneyed joe, cha- cha stomp- too cool.

Spanish music- I love Mana and Shakira, and my little secret...OV7

Rain in Arizona - not Portland

Firetrucks in Portland

Explosions- is anyone still reading?

listening to Em breath beside me at night- she is sleeping right now and I just heard it so I thought I would add it.

well this has been my list, please feel free to make your lists of sounds that you love. Em is leaving in like twelve hours, So I hope she will enjoy reading this while she is in the AZ and I am stuck here at my boring institute of higher learning. Sacrifices... but at least I am not getting surgery!!

Journal Jar Challenge #2

Thanks to Tiffany, I decided to snazz up my blog a little bit and take the Journal Jar Challenge:

"What do they call you? Why do they call you that? Don't have a nickname? What about your kids, or husband or friend-whatever. Your challenge is to do a layout or blog about your nickname(s) by November 13."

Emali:
Of course we can start with "Em" which is most frequently used. But I was trying to dig deep into the past and recall some of the other nicknames I've had.

My brothers call me "Sister" or "Sis". (It is just me and the boys, remember! Don't worry, I always respond back with "brother").

I can remember a dear friend, Julie Jan calling me "Emmy-poo-poo". I hated it! And then I didn't mind it so much. It reminds me of old days after primary softball getting together with the neighborhood girls and climbing trees and getting into trouble.

In college, my dear roommates and I were making matching roommate t-shirts to wear (long live H.E.R.E.) and they were trying to think of a nickname to write on the back and discovered that my name spelled backwards is "I Lame" I know you call all laugh because I'm sure my parents NEVER thought of that when trying to create my unique name spelling.

One of my dearest friends (also a college roommate) dubbed me "Oatmeal" which now gets shortened to "Oats". Don't ask! I don't really remember where that come from!

The last is by far the most special to me. Only those very near and dear are allowed to use it. I'm almost a little afraid to type it because I just wrote that. Honestly I think only 3-5 people used it regularly (my parents' best friends who have known me my whole life, my husband, and now it's rubbed off a little on my husband's family). Drum roll please......

"Emi" The spelling comes from an old cabbage patch doll my parents give me once named Emi as well. I guess I like this one best but there's something to be said about keeping it special by not over-using it.

I'm sure there are some that I missed! So I'm inviting all friends and family to remind me of the names I've forgotten.

It's that time again!

Image
Tonight is Girls Night Out! It's my favorite night of the whole month. I have my cards ready for card swap and I've been rolling the dice to practice my bunko skills! Don't worry Marykaye, I'm bringing my appetite as well. Can't wait to see you girls there! Bring on the prizes!

My Babies

I went to the Doc on Monday and these are the cool shots she got of the baby...

This one is cool because it's of the front of the baby. Can you find the eyes and little arms and legs? Come on it's looking right at you!

The side view: a little face and eyes, and if you squint and turn your head a little you can see the arms and legs.

I love this shot. Every once in a while I get a GOOD pic out of my old, crappy, slow camera! YEAH!

New Stuff

So, our family has been bugging us to post some video of Gracie. This is more to appease the wanting masses than anything else. Emali did some fancy stuff with the credits at the end so I don't know if it has made it slower or what but we have been having one heck of a time downloading it and trying to send it out through emails, so this is the best we got. Please let us know if it is too slow or if it messes up, or if you can't get it.

Friends and Fam Links

Hey I finally updated my links...that's long overdue! But if I overlooked you I either don't really like you all that much or just that I didn't find your link when I was link hunting. It's probably the first one! Just drop me a line if you feel left out! ha ha ha Can't wait for girls nite tonight! I'll try and post our fun stuff tomorrow!

take 2

More of the catch-up...

Image Apparently she is smart enough to read upside down!
Alexa came to visit over her Fall Break and we had a blast taking her around town. Gracie was sure sad when her bff went back home.

ImageThis was an earlier pic that I found and I love the galoshes and aprons they provide for the kids!

Image

By the time Alexa left I had maxed out the memory card and was having to delete pics so I could take more. I was annoyed and this was the only pic of our fun trip to the zoo. First, I love that I found these cute leggings at a baby expo. I can still dress her in skirts but don't have to worry about dealing with tights. And seconds, I love when the peacocks at the zoo just walk right up to you for no reason at all. (It's in the top right hand of the photo.)

All in all we are loving our new "home", I think AZ will always be home to us. Lance is surviving school. But he says its definitely not like getting your undergrad. He says they went though an entire semester's worth of information in 1 class period! I think we both realized how much of a growing experience this is going to be for us. We're buckling down, we're going to have a doctor in the family!
