Western Semi-Finals

By lauren

At the end of March I went to Findlay, Ohio and competed at Semi-Finals with the Equestrian Team.  Qualifying for Semi's means that we already won our region competition, and were competing against schools across the country such as Ohio, New York, California, and others.  We did really well there and our team took second place which qualified us for Nationals which is the first week of May.  It is in Lexington, Kentucky during the same time as the Kentucky Derby so we are planning on going to that as well!  The team is practicing a lot, and we're hoping to do well at Nationals!!

An Exciting Week!

By lauren
This week was Finals week. Enough said right? After months of class... it all comes down to the final test and we are out for the summer. I had Photo and Calculus on Monday, Economics and Accounting on Thursday. I successfully passed them all and don't have to think about school again tell Fall! And that's not even the most exciting part of my week.

Image First on Monday I found out that I had received the Hung Wo Ching (pictured above) Agricultural Economics Scholarship - $2000.00 for next year! I had applied for a lot of scholarships, and was excited to receive this one!

Image More good news on Monday, I found out that I had received the internship I applied for with Guide Dogs for the Blind. I will be staying in California from August 7-22nd, working in the training department. This was my top choice of departments to be in, this is where they train the dogs like Tillis that have been raised by other people and then go to California for further training.

Image Last bit of good news I just found out today! I had put in an application for an office assistant job in the College of Ag. at Utah State. They had me come in this morning for an interview at nine, and by noon they had contacted me letting know that I had gotten the job! I was so nervous for the interview, but turns out it was worth it. I will work there from 1-5 M-F, and also keep my current job at Impact from 8-noon.

This one hasn't quiet happened yet, but it's still exciting..... I will be moving here...... Imagewhen fall semester starts!

Bozeman

By lauren
This past weekend I had a horse show in Bozeman Montana. We drove up Friday afternoon and came home Sunday afternoon. This is by far my favorite show to go to because it isn't too long of a drive (about 6 hours) and it's the only school that has a heated indoor arena!
ImageThe people in our van ImageJason doing hair ImageSome of the team ImageWe have to sign medical releases at the first of every show, and this year we also signed a paper saying that we don't have to wear helmets while showing. Turns out nobody really read what we were signing and we actually signed a paper saying that we WOULD wear helmets! So, off came our cowboys hats and on went the helmets. If was a good thing our english team also had a show that weekend or else we would have not of had any helmets for our team to wear! It was pretty funny to see the boys on our team showing in helmets! Image All in all it was a good show, I got fourth place so pretty good for the first show of the year.

Can you see me?

By lauren
This is the remains of an old look out for Fort Hallick that was on the ranch property way back when. Can you see anything there in the rocks?

How about now?

Lately we have been having a lot of rain and colder weather, so when a nice warm day comes and the sun is out, we can count on the rattlesnakes to sunbathe out on the rock house. We didn't see this guy until our second look around the rocks, and it's a good thing we saw him because this snake didn't have any buttons so it wouldn't be able to rattle and warn us it was there. After getting a couple good pictures, Jake took care of the snake if you know what i mean.

The Ranch

By lauren
Image Well, I've been at the ranch for 2 1/2 weeks now! Time is going pretty quick! It's a pretty easy job, riding horses all day what could be better? Right now we have 6 guests out at the ranch. A typical day when we have guests goes something like this: Jake (the other wrangler) and I bring horses in before breakfast and get them caught and tied up in the barn. This past week we have been out at the barn at 5 every morning because the horses are in a far pasture. Then we go in for breakfast at 6. We always have a delicious breakfast usually consisting of eggs, pancakes, bacon or sausage, and usually some kind of fruit. Around seven we go down to the barn with the guests and get everyone's horses grained, brushed and saddled, and are usually riding by 8. We then take them on a ride somewhere up in the mountains. Then we are back sometime between 11 & noon, just in time for lunch (which is at noon). Lunch is the largest meal of the day here because all the ranch hands eat lunch in the lodge. Then depending on the weather and how saddle sore the guests are, we either go riding in the afternoon, or one day during the week we take them into the town of Elko to see the sights. There is a really nice western tack store that we always stop by and the Western Folk Life Center that has a gallery of handcrafted saddles, bridles, bits and reigns. I think the most expensive saddle in there is $24,000! Then we come back for dinner at 6. After dinner we are free to do whatever we want, so it's nice to have some free time at night! All in all it's a pretty easy going job! Copper was a little shell shocked at fist when we came out here, but is fitting in nicely now. He's getting a lot more confident and he can now be pastured with all the other horses. That's pretty much the ranch in a nutshell! I finally got some pictures onto my computer so i'll try to keep posting more often!
