︎︎︎ Our thesis engages one of architecture’s foundational dichotomies: the building as anautonomous object versus the building as part of an urban configuration. To navigate throughthis dichotomy, our stadium tests the idea of a new urban morphology by shifting its role as the new urban generator to facilitate the growth of the city. Stadiums, typically known as iconswithin the city, are moving in a new direction of multi-use, the idea of the singular entity, thebowl in a field of parking, is outdated. Our project doesn&amp;#39;t serve as a single-use building but iscomprised of multiple parts integrated with the rest of the site, producing an opportunity toreprogram the context as a new urban generator. Instead of waiting for the city to meet the site,our project grows to meet the city. The brief asks for an Olympic football stadium located on theoutskirts of Montpellier with post-event sustainability. This is a college town in the south ofFrance and the current growth of the city is expected to reach the site of the stadium in the next10-20 years, demanding an urban response. We are looking at parts, which allow us to addressthe project in a morphological approach where we interrogate the aspects of the stadium or thesingular object that make it rigid; which are in this development of a large scale, building on&nbsp;an urban site. Advancing on the pedagogy established in previous&nbsp;studios (AMIGAA: Architecture as Mass, Interiority, Ground, Aperture&nbsp;and Articulation), this studio focuses on the design, development,&nbsp;and tectonic logic of the building envelope and its ability to articulate&nbsp;contemporary formal organizations. Assemblage versus monolithic&nbsp;form, surface versus mass, iconicity and image, the intentional&nbsp;obscuring of hierarchical mass, layered, and graphic assemblies,&nbsp;tectonics and materiality, constitute a range of concerns in the&nbsp;design work. Beyond design competence, students are expected&nbsp;to articulate and argue for conceptual and disciplinary positions in&nbsp;relation to issues of AMIGAA in anticipation of more advanced work&nbsp;in vertical and thesis studios. Premise: We began the studio with an interest in forms of interlock that were both tightly integrated and interconnected but that allowed for a&nbsp;specific type of movement between parts. One example of the kind of&nbsp;connections we looked at were trumpet valves in relation to its casing.&nbsp;We saw a potential for architectural exploration not only in the mechanical&nbsp;relationship of parts at a certain scale but also in the organizational systems&nbsp;at play, for example, the idea that the valves must fit within its casing at&nbsp;a very specific point in order for air to travel through its pathways. The idea is to mine these&nbsp;kinds of relationships for their potential to be transferred conceptually&nbsp;and formally across scales. Small but critical details are selected to be&nbsp;developed materially and tectonically as a way of establishing a set of&nbsp;detail logics for the building. Premise: We began the studio with an interest in forms of interlock that were both tightly integrated and interconnected but that allowed for a specific type of movement between parts. One example of the kind of&nbsp;connections we looked at were trumpet valves in relation to its casing.&nbsp;We saw a potential for architectural exploration not only in the mechanical&nbsp;relationship of parts at a certain scale but also in the organizational systems&nbsp;at play, for example, the idea that the valves must fit within its casing at&nbsp;a very specific point in order for air to travel through its pathways.
